From this proported EA posting

Someone who claims to be from EA reports the following:

Anonymous EA says:
October 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm
DAOC: 50k
UO: 50k
WAR: 110k

That’s the best I know.

So the OP is exaggerating unless he’s combining the two other products. The other numbers he’s quoting are off too. Some down. Some up.
To me that sounds about right. I'll bet on any given month only about 20-25k of those actually log in with many holding on to accounts/houses.

I play on GL which is a fairly populated shard can can honestly say I would be surprised if more than 1k people are actively playing it. Most days you see the same 20 or 40 people on their 6-12 characters.

While some guilds are big (300-400 people) most have 4-5 char in the guild per account. If the average person has 2 accounts figgure 10 char per person - thats like 30-40 people in the largest guild. Sounds about right.....

Discuss.

Why are you taking the word of an anonymous comment over the blog post which says Warhammer Online has less subscriptions than UO or DAOC? For all we know UO could have 110k and Warhammer could be 50k.

WAR has a free endless trial, which is like Free To Play, which apparently is quite popular.

UO had, according to a MMO subs site at the end of 2007, 70000 accounts.

My guess is UO should have more accounts.
An UO server can hold up to 7000 houses (accounts - if we assume every subscriber has a house)
UO has more than 20 servers, so my guess would still be about 70k accounts. Remember also that on aerage only 10% of the population log in at prome time. Should be more like 50% with the booster at the moment.

Then Warhammer only has 6 US servers? 6 European servers?
How would they manage 100k accounts?

Babble your sig, "Lord of the Rings Online has doubled its revenue and created over a million new accounts since going free-to-play early last month," says it all.

WAR has a endless trial (endless free to play) option. Thats why they have more accounts.

UO had 70000 at the end of 2007. Do you think that since then the number of accounts has gone down or up?

Sadly, the number is going down...the only way to rise up UO is called free2play with item shop (like lotro, d&d...)

Warhammer should also only count paying customers.
Is a website out there that monitors lvl 40 people and combined of the 4 shards warhammer US peaks at 2000 players online at the same time.
If we say about 10% log in at prime time that would then be about 20.000 accounts all in all.
With accounts not lvl 40 then maybe 30.0000.

And if you are really generous same for the european servers, but no way I believe that Warhammer has 100.000 paying accounts.

UO has housing which keeps players paying and though servers are not full, most shards have over 3000 paying accounts. (3000 is about the number a full Trammel shard has?)

why? Belive me, all the mmorpg that become f2p rise the inscription number :)
Raising the subscription numbers means nothing unless more money comes in. Do you really want to go free-to-play and pay more money than a monthly subscription costs?

If uo became free, many of the player of unofficla shards will ocme to OSI
and wind up spending more than $13.00 a month because they have to buy the fee-to-have features to enjoy the game.

Think before you rave about the b.s. of free-to-play. Your believing the companies PR which is intended to make you come running wide-eyed and screaming free! free! free! and then they drain money out of you until they are rich.

LOL

'sorry it counts all the accounts created, not by active users'

UO only has 130.000 accounts created?

If UO has 130.000 accounts then they really should hire one or two more developers or hire a few more GMs.

Actually, you're incorrect in the assumption that Free To Play games are unsuccessful. I was of a similar thinking that these games make no money, however...
I recently started playing this online game called League of Legends, and it's a whole lot of fun. It is free to play.
Now, you can earn points slowly by playing games. With those points you can purchase some items like Runes and Champions. However, there are some things you can not buy. For example, you can not buy "skins" for these Champions with those earned points but you have to purchase them. This game makes a large amount of revenue and is constantly updating the game. The game is so popular and is making so much revenue that it can afford making a Mac client that has been asked for by many users including myself. I have yet to purchase anything, however I will admit that I've been thinking of purchasing points for a few items. If several players every month pay $20 for points to earn certain items, you bet they can keep churning things out (already this month there have been two new champions created and more on the way).
If UO went free to play, you would see a lot more players, but you would have to limit the things they can do and give them incentives as to why they play. Look at facebook - people LOVE farmville and other games on there. Most of the items you -do not- have to purchase, but you can step onto other players farms and clubs and what not and find purchased items.
I'm not believe BS from PR, I'm just watching it happen to prove my point.

The site that watches rr40 for warhammer doesnt count the players that are working chars that are under rr40. I have 3 chars now in destro under the lvl 40 and under rr 40. Only one destro over lvl 40 and rr40. I dont sign in on my order chars on another server that are over lvl 40 and rr 40 so those numbers dont show on the site. So the site is far from acurate.

Last night about 9ish I signed on was full blow battle already in Reikland. Had to go to Kadrin Valley to stop order there also. Took us 4 hours to stop order and get Kadrin valley locked and Reikland locked. That isnt including the time and players that was playing earlier to lock other zones. I know destro had 6 full wbs working together for the flip and locking of zones. Then their were mutiple wbs of destro just killing order. So those figures are not very accurate when Im in the game and see at least 2k players in one zone that all are not lvl40 or rr40.

Plus they dont count the players that are in T1, T2, or T3. They are only counting RR40 chars and above. Not all are hard core players that live to play. War does have casual players that like the lower tiers and play with a toon her and there to stay in lower tiers. I know once I got my Witch elf in tier 4 I havent used her and she is lvl 34. I am using my shaman or chosen which both atm are still under rr40 and lvl 40. My squig herder is RR42 and and Lvl 40 but havent signed onto him b/c I was making other chars.

UO has many people that just have accounts reactivated every 90 days to refresh their house and not playing so that could inflate UO numbers just like free trial accounts. Only in spikes because each month could vary depending on how many people are activating to refresh their houses.

DaoC is epic when it comes to game mechanics. Even has housing. It what UO should/could of been when it comes to modernizing UO to current times on graphics and game mechanics. By far DaoC alone on housing beats UO housing by miles. They make you pay rent to keep your house and time is limited. So no holding house plots like in UO for 3 months. You can lose your house in a month if you cant afford the rent or forget to pay it in DaoC.

In a way Uo is going in the direction of DaoC and Warhammer with the modernization if the UI in the new client. With addons that Mythic allows its make the game most interesting what you can do with them.

This person is upset and bashing the division they are working in. If this person was being fired in the UO or Daoc division then they be doing the same to UO or DaoC numbers. EA does not release subs so they only know. Not some artist for Bioware. The one link I read above that was posted in feb 09 does not even have WoW listed so that information isnt fully accurate. I also have guild war accounts. You only pay for the game you dont pay a monthly fee. So this sub discussuion can go on and numbers thrown out but like I said EA only knows the true numbers and they will not release those numbers. Its people guessing numbers.

My guess is that UO did drop to around 50k, with new games coming out and after a very slow decline before that. But I think people are coming back now, slowly but surely.

I think there was a very slow decline over the years before SA was released. UO was stagnant feeling, and the items system of AoS and the grinding and all left even players who knew there was nothing better game play wise, to consider newer games. And when those new games came out, for as bad as they were, I think it sped up the exodus from UO.

However, I think SA was a huge boost. Not immediately so much as giving players cause to rethink UO. And I think we're currently seeing players come back at a slow but steady pace. I think this HS booster will add to that.

So, my guess overall is that UO hit around 50k, and has started growing again and may be up to 55-60k now.

One thing I'm very sure of. The effects of releases, competition, changes to the game, these things may affect subs right away, but the long term affects can be different. I suspect games going FtP have the same affects, a short term boost, followed by long term damage. And I don't believe the numbers and claims of success from companies going that route. Statistics can be told in many ways, most not very honest. And one thing about the FtP account creation, they never go off the books. So if you're keeping 1 out of 10 new freebies, your books still show all 10. The way many of these games are set up, that 1 account is likely to buy into the subscription because they get more for their money, by design. And an initial rush can be expected. Lets give FtP some more time and watch with our own eyes rather than listen to PR claims, and we'll see how that goes in reality.

I prefer pay much money but have more player.

Coz in MMORPG the first M (massively) is so important!

I agree. FTP has many options and many more subs to make more money then a monthly based fee game. Rapplez boast over 5 million players. Ok say even 3 million are true. 1 million actually spend 10 dollars a month on average. 10 mil in one month versus UO with 135k subs x 12.99= 1,753,650. Even if I dropped it to half in Rapplez to 5 dollars a month they are still beating UO. FTP does not hurt a game.

Farmville has cards in game stops, walmart and other places. I was buying my daughter a Wizard 101 gametime card. I already had spent 20 dollars for her 2 month sub on a card but went back out b/c she needed crowns for the holiday stuff so I bought 2 more cards for her. So I spent 40 dollars for subs and crowns for her in a 2 day period. I saw all these other game time cards but man no UO game time cards cant be found.

Hmmmmmm farmville has game cards but UO doesnt promote gametime cards. Something isnt right with this picture.

Yes, but EA does not care if you play or not. Actually better if you don't play and use less bandwith.
:)

And I know people I played 7+ years ago who 'left' but their house is still standing and I really doubt they play.

I know, I've played for years in free shards, but I've committed a bif mistake, because UO is a very old game, and now is important go to play in OSI shard, because i don't want that this game die :)

LAWL!!! I have many chars on many shards. Some shards are sadly dead. If you could hear crickets in the game then that could sum it up on some of the shards. Servers dont mean anything. War made smaller servers to have a populated server. Same as they did with daoC but the made it into clusters so people still could have their houses but rvr and pve in the same area. Housing was the only differnce in zone speaking.

Lets see some of UO shards that are lacking.....

Sadly even activity does not count for anything in UO.
It is housing that counts. Lots of people pay for their UOSims house, but do not log in a lot.

And outch for Siege. With AOS I calculated that on average 7 people are in 1 guild. For Siege that would mean about 1000 people left....

Well would make a decent freeshard still.

Give 30 days from the time the return to brit has faded and see guild numbers. Some people come back still guilded some dont. Holding a house plot hostage for a 1 month renewal fee and held for 90 days isnt really contributing to constant numbers.

Was there days the banks were full in most towns? Yes but those days are long gong

Is luna losing weight on some shards with lack of vendors? Yes some are hurting more then others.

Tis sad the game I first fell in love with have come to this. I play for community really. The lack of people on shards I played vary greatly. I could be on a US shard mid day and dead. Go to oceania shard same time of day and be busy b/c it was their prime time with people playing.

Heh! I can log into war and have instant battles. I prefer RvR (PvP) anyway and have instant battles in instances or go to a zone and fight. Plus its hours on end. No work.

UO is more of an individual game anymore. I can solo most every bosss out there and was self sufficient. Having others to depend on you to do the work was exhausting. My game time shouldnt have to be total work which what it was becoming like. I did my time on trying to help others and truthfully I got burned out after a while.:flame:Plus I was very generous and did try to do what I could for my guildmates at the time. There is a difference of being taken advantage of and being helped with being a little grateful for it. Instead I was constatly attacked by some that wasnt so considerate of the help. That would make anybody with a little common sense a little bitter.

My crew of good freinds left years ago and we was good together but now days its hard to find that crew with the same gaming mentality in UO. We didnt even have to be in vent and knew each others move so well we still work like a well oiled machine in the pvp field. We worked together an did things together in pvm also.

With the new land masses added it seperated the community more imo. Baja tried a new event when the booster came out. If I recall reading only 3 people showed up. Could be wrong could of been 2 I would have to go check. lol

Many of the houses that stand today are on inactive accounts. Trust me.

If the system really worked - you'd see a 30-40% reduction in houses on the major shards.

To the person who said 7k houses per shard - that might work for Pacific, Atlantic, GL etc. Many shards are filled with 18x18 and castles and have very few houses.

If you want to see deserted log into Airang or Balhea and create a char. Walk outside luna gates. You can place 18x18 ANYWHERE in malas and most people on the shard have castles. There are probably no more than 75 people that play the entire shard.

There is MMOGCHART.COM and one other that claim the same, but at least they try to link to their sources

So maple Story has 83 million active paying customers....?
Second Life 16 Million ?

It also fails to mention WoW accounts at all so I take that data with a grain of salt Plus that link was posted in feb 2009. I agree with Babble. Its not paid subs or active just accounts created.

Guild wars dont even bill a monthly fee but they are basing that off how many games they sold and thats with all expansions not just one as an individual. So I have 2 accounts of Guild wars with all expansions. But to another they may have only bought one game not all expansions. So their information is based on games sold ( doesnt matter what expansion but all sold in general) not accounts.

UO certainly can claim to have more servers than warhammer now.
UO will also certainly claim to have run longer than warhammer.

And in my opinion Uo has still more outlasting power than warhammer.
But then UO had the Slogan 'We create Worlds' while the only thing I heard of warhammer was 'Waaaar!' and cool and such dewd stuff.

I reactivated after 6 years. It's very obvious that numbers are way down. I've never seen so many large houses. When I quit Brit Bank and Luna where both full of people. Now Brit is a ghost town and Luna usually only has a few people.

I'd say 75-100k accounts sounds about right. You have to remember though that it is estimated that half of all accounts are Japanese and many people have multiple accounts or only keep the account active to keep their castle or fancy custom house. I'd guess there might be as few as 25k actual subscibers in North America and Europe.

Warhammer sold a million boxes in it's first month alone, it's "created accounts" would thus be over a million as well. Even if we assume the other numbers are true, 50k is a healthy number of subscribers for a successful but now ancient game. 110k for a hyped new megamillion dollar game is apocalyptically bad.

It is though most of them would have to be too stupid to place a house, else the shards would have fuller housing.
