I think something that gets lost from time to time is that UO is still the best MMO that has ever existed / exists today. It is the only real skill based MMO and the only MMO that is an actual virtual world rather than a linear network of quests masquerading as a world.

Thanks UO!

I do agree that UO is still one of the best out there. There is just something about the way the game is set-up that I just like. I tried WOW, I don't like it. I had even tried Everquest, but that just made me dreadfully confused. I guess it is the simplicity of the way the game looks and runs in 2D. Maybe I just like the quasi-birds eye view and the simple graphics. :)

As One who has played since 1997,

I Concur with the OP's comments.

HOWEVER, I URGE EAMYTHIC "NOT" to rest upon its past laurels!!! Much may be improved and SHOULD BE improved BOTH within the game mechanics AND within GM & Customer Support.

An SoS

p.s. anyone listened to the entire intro "movie" lately? I did recently and it still sends shivers & excitement up my spine (Love UO)

UO is a good game; I'm glad it was the one I ended up playing.

I could think of a lot of things that could be improved, of course.

Customer service has always, always been UO's weak point. I was highly encouraged to hear about that GM actually investigating a scripter a couple of weeks back. (Remember the post where the GM told some dude to not block the scripter's recall spot, because it was interfering with the investigation?)

I could think of other things too. But for the moment I'll just focus on agreeing that UO is a good game, worth playing.

I agree, but I also feel that UO sells itself short, by a long distance, with decisions to do things to make it more like other games.

UO is more than awsome. It is the best and most complete virtual world there is out there.
There are more things to do in this game than anything I have seen out there. And I have tried quit a few.
Yes I agree this game is awsome.

Now if we could only convince EA to do some advertising!!! But maybe that will come with SA, which I know is on the way... :)

You know, if they manage to fix up KR, and put that together with an advertising campaign for SA, I do think it will pay big dividends in terms of new players. All us veterans tend to love the 2D client, it is what we know and are used to, but the SA client really is several generations more advanced, and will be much easier for new players to use.

(And for the record, I don't think there is a snowballs chance in Hades that SA will be KR only. If they don't see now that that would be a disaster, they aren't as smart as I happen to think they are...)

I too think this game is awesome. I have been playing since 2000.

I will go play those other level grind games for a bit. I get bored of leveling and come back to UO. I never let my UO account lapse though.

The good thing about the other games is that you do not have a house invested that will fall if you suspend your account, unlike UO. We have more invested and don't want to lose it. Well, I don't anyway... Although, I have been mad at some of the decisions made and wanted to just QUIT!

Refreshing to see a thread like this. Ive always loved the versatility in UO that a lot of other games dont have. The possibilities are endless. I havent done even close to everything, only been playing for 3 years, but still thats saying a lot.

Amen!

And I agree about the lack of advertising....they shoud do more..and not necessarily to traditonal gamer audiences...there are many "non-gamers" out there who would find UO a great discovery!

My real life is awesome.

And i even take time to sink hours and hours into this game. Probably the biggest time investment in anything ever. Although i hope that my yoga practise time will catch up on my UO hours.

I have to agree , I still play Guildwars from time to time , but its no UO.Plus once you beat Guildwars its just no fun anymore (IMO). I tried WoW and Final Fastasy but didnt like either of them. I played EQ on playstation 2 for like 5 months then got sicks of it. No matter what I try I always end up back in UO.

If they pull off stygian abyss.
That will beef up crafting.
Then fix up crafting a bit more.
And toss in a completely random spawning world that we have to explore nooks and crannies (not grannies that be gross) to find interesting adventures...

WOW will be used to describe UO.

That is (for those that miss things)...
A player player UO and saying WOW this game is impressive.

After 8+ years of UO ...... I started with only one account I now have 8... everytime I concider letting some go..... I find some new excuse to keep them...... every one of them.....

There just isn't anything like UO..... no other game has the customization of UO..... No other game allows you to be so creative.... No other game offers you all the depth, individuality or has the scope that UO does.... it's a grind... It's a fight to do this quest and that quest at this or that level if your one of these then you do this at that level.... I don't want my game laid out before me...... I don't want my world spelled out for me before I even begin.... I want to explore..... I want to be able to shape my surroundings...... and I want to be able to express my creativity.... One day I may feel like buildng a forest.... one day I may feel like building a garden... have an auction???? Perhaps hold an event....... Net toss??...... You just can't be as creative in other games.....

Truely as well the community of UO makes the game..... Though I wish they would bring back Seers, EM's and or EM events.... And allow shards more creative expression.... like japaneese shards...... But UO is definatly where I will remain.....

If they make SA KR only I'm afraid that would be the one that I do not buy..... no reason to..... I can't play in KR....... I just keep hoping that EA/UO will remember what makes UO great....... it's not items.... it's community and creativity... Give us more of that... fix pvp.... and fix factions... return to events ..... upgrade and update the old map and dungeons, fix crafting..... and add more intersting spawns randomize things a bit. Update fishing, and some of the other skills.... keep up the good work on fixing bugs..... we all know there are still several out there needing squashed......

Please click the hatchling and help it grow.

Started UO with one account in 97, now have 4 active accounts (Have several other dormant accounts i haven't touched in years). I've played SEVERAL other MMOs, and i always come back to UO. UO is classified as a "Sandbox" type game, meaning thing's are not linear and laid out before you like a road, and you have some actual freedom. 99% of the other games out there are "Themepark" style games, which is basically the opposite of "Sandbox".
One of the biggest things that attract me to UO is it's PvP. Even with PvP being newbified a bit when AoS introduced itemization, i still find UO's PvP to be the most intense and player skill required game out there. In games like WoW, what determines who wins in a fight is Level > Class > Equipment > Player Skill. Player Skill only attributes about 3-5% in the fight in them games. Some person can buy an account, and immediately start stomping people because the char is built. That's CvC (Character vs Character), not PvP. In UO, some person can buy an account with a fully skilled/geared Mage char, yet get their ass handed to them by a Mage in a welfare suit.

There's one game coming out this year that may be able to divert most of my attention from UO (Not all of it, been playing UO for 10-11 Years, not about to let that go, been playing/investing for too long to stop completely). Aventurine has officially announced that Darkfall will be released in 2008. Darkfall is another "Sandbox" type game, and from what i've read of it's features, even more so than UO. Darkfall will heavily focus on PvP, and will have NO "Safe Zones", so it will not be for everyone. YouTube has some pretty good videos explaining some of it's features, but most of the Videos are pretty old (Not to mention YouTube squeezes the graphical quality out of the video), and Darkfall has better graphics now.

That's was good to hear when I read it on another game site.

If Darkfall does comes out and delivers on only half of what it says, we will see if UO can survive without the PvP players.

hahah u must be new ! theres way to many problems here that they wont fix!
instead they send out auto replys rather then an in game suport agent!
they cant seem to even charge u the same time every month!
they stoped give gm names in your pages for a gm so if u do have a problem with one that wont put the coffe cup down. you canrt even send a gm reveiew that will get a response! need i go on i didnt think so i have been here for years and i just basically am getting so fed up with it if i could sell my items on ebay like before i would quit !

Wow does suck.

UO is good...it's just frustrating sometimes because it could be better and they don't seem to see how a few simple changes could make a difference.

UO was good and still could be

Sadly EA rested too long on its laurels - the laurels are shriveld up and squashed now beyond reckognision...

Just deactivating a client and then not working on the new one is a very bad tactic - All ex-3dlers I knew have quitted - I myself will also probably in 2-3 weeks.

Working on the bugs like they are now from what I hear (wouldnt know - never online) is good but damn late.
Lets hope its not too late atall... (Better said, I hope for your sake and the active people I know who ..still..play)

Playing a different game which has the open 360° sandbox system (like UO has) BUT:........

Releases 1-2 FREE big addons a year
Continuesly works on bugs,serverimprovement,lag-reducing etc etc
Has friendy, efficient and fast (gasp) Gamemasters
Keeps to its core-principals - no matter what !
Had/has a old client with GOOD graphics and releases a new client with TOP-graphics - Which both work PERFECTLY
Has a community which despises games like Wow - hehe I particular like that
LISTENS to its playerbase, then THINKS and THEN does certain changes
Has ONE single "shard" (except testserver and a chinese-shard)
Has devs that claim to drink lots of beer ;)
Hasnt got an out-off-control problem with scripters/macroers because they stamp down hard on them. Yes they exist but every mmorpg has them - BUT its FAR from rampant out-off controll.....
Has a GROWING playerbase (12k when I started at peaktime - now over 40k...) and about 350k (?) and growing active accounts
PUll through what they started instead of continiues backpeddling...

...... makes it harder and harder for me to keep my account active of a game I played and loved for years.... :(

Well, I know ALOT of pvprs who went to Conan. And so far UO is still hopping with great pvprs. I know on Legends, alot of folks went to AoC. Its pvp based as well. I guess we will se what happens in the near future though ehh Coulter.

WoW isn't a bad game by any means. It's nearly bug free, well balanced and fun. Heck if you can entertain 10 million people with a game, it's gotta be good.

UO is totally different game though. WoW is a lot more linear. The whole quest system is easy, but also very numbing. It requires very little input from the player. You do the quest (usually kill 1-20 monsters), turn in, get xp and have level 70 as a goal. Whereas in UO the skills are a way to obtain a goal. And the goals aren't really fixed like they are in WoW.
When you log into UO there are no goals, no quests, no fixed things. You, yourself, are the one to set the goals. It gives you an immense freedom. Which I think is a superior concept.

'Ignorance is bliss' applies to WoW. Most gaming nowadays is linear. It's a simple form of entertainment, like TV. You don't have to decide, just sit back, relax and enjoy. UO has a completely opposite approach. You need to work, you need to investigate, you need to determine. More like real life. In real life you need to work in order to proceed, you don't get some guy coming to you saying 'You need to do this job and I will pay you very well!'.

Of course a game will always use a certain mathematical model as a foundation, which implies some sort of linear concept, but UO depends way less on this than WoW.

Anyway, UO currently still is the most challenging, fun and diverse game out there. The graphics might be less pretty, but graphics are just the visual realisation of the actual game, so not essential in my opinion.

Technically they dont entertain that many people. They have had that many accounts registered, but I think its closer to only 6.5-7 mil they entertain...

but still I see your point. Just to even get 10mil registrations is sick.
