UO "Horde mode"

A recent discussion on these boards triggered a thought in to my head...

This may sound completely stupid, but what about the option for a limited number of players to play as monsters in a designated area and/or for a designated period of time? An "event" of sorts...

I think this would introduce a whole new dynamic to the game and would give a lot of players something to complete for or against while obviously adding a whole new experience for new and existing players. I know that the functionality exists because GMs have "played as" monsters with special abilities in the past, but I wasn't sure if there were any options available to extend that feature to players.

Just an idea... :)

You can in Felucca with polymorph and so.
Defintion of Trammel where only consentual pvp exists forbids that option.

This is an awesome idea. I can just imagine the battles. No more boring hit and run crud.

Yes it's a cool idea, but I can't think of any practical way this could be implemented.

I think you should just be able to start a character as a monster. It would have to be a whole new kind of character, with different abilities and different restrictions.

Something like you start out as a slime and evolve up to more powerful monsters.

Now THAT would be fun! They should have done that for the SOTD.

I'd love to be a paragon Slasher and banksit at Luna.. :p

I'd happily let people try fight me, I'll just watch for a bit before killing them in one hit. :D

This would be fun along with a friend playing a Monstrous Interred Grizzle (Paragon) to ruin everyone's armor would be the ultimate Luna banksitter's nightmare! Devs make this happen!

Maybe make it so you cant leave dungeons except at night (safe in player houses), but set up a network of gates only useable by monsters. Maybe you get some sort of hoard rather than a bank.

I think it is important to distinguish designated areas. It's also important to not allow abuse of this type of system such as "banksitting" which completely defeats the purpose.

In my opinion, not every monster should be playable and monster characters should be limited in their abilities; meaning that they should not have all of the same abilities as their player counterparts. There should also be a limited few monsters that are playable and they should be powerful enough to stand up against more than 1 player, but not so powerful as to allow 1-hit kills.

The banksitting thing was a joke. This monster playing idea is good but you've got to be kidding yourself if you think the devs would ever give the playerbase what they're asking for. Just reference your sig if you need further evidence of that.

I couldn't tell if that was a joke or a "half-serious" type of thing.

I agree that this is a long shot and probably will be taken with a grain of salt even if it did get any attention, but I thought it would be worth posting as a fun topic of conversation. :)

The term "Horde mode" makes me want to vomit. Dont come here trying to give UO WoW terminology. You want "Horde" go to blizzard.

I suggested this a number of years back...and was promptly set upon by the board gorillas.

They said, in turn: been mentioned before, you're an idiot, why unbalance the game, how stooopid and so forth.

I like the idea obviously.

My limitations were pretty simple. Monsters start as lowly orcs (or the like) and can gain in skill over time just like a player's character.

If you log out and do not play that monster for over 48 hours, a week, or some other time limit, it goes away.

Guards can and will attack you, maybe even wandering healers...? BUT!!!! To mob-toons the Guards are regular NPCS who cannot guard-whack but can call every active/stationed guard in the city (Not the summoned ones from BANK GUARDS).

Mob-toons are randomly assigned upon log in. You cannot "pop" between them until you find the type you like. This is ensured by either making it so new mob-toons must await for 48 hours of non-mob-toon play to elapse. You then get another randomly assigned mob-toon to your account.

You CAN get big and strong! Remember, in literature the dragon gets to win sometime.

Back to the orc. After a certain amount of skill gain and leveling you get to chose the next stage of mob-toon. In time the lowly orc can evolve to be a Greater Dragon. There are evil quests that make this possible. "Go see the mean shaman near the undead city etc...

Alternately, everyone can have a mob-toon (Which goes away if not 'refresh' played every 48 - 72 hours, or maybe a week?) but if killed it suffers the old school Red stat loss.

Mob-toons must journey back to their spawning ground to rezz.

No insta-travel for mob-toons. Though subjegating (taming) mounts is possible with a few bolas that every mob-toon starts with. Careful though, the horse may win the battle...back to the spawning caves....

Spawn spots are random so Characters can't camp them.

And perhaps most importantly, mob-toons can only skill up by killing characters or perhaps non-possessed other mobs.

It would be cool to see two hundred player orcs assault Luna, why not?

I despise bank sitters.

Sorry, that would be too much like PvP, the trammies would have no part of it...la

The game already has this option. It's called being red and living in Felucca. Many Trammies have no idea what wonders await them in the land of tombstones and leafless trees...la

I like the premise, but I think you are putting too much thought and detail into it to be honest. My interpretation was simply to allow players to play as a monster in a designated area, not open up a whole different player race or have an elaborate skill gain path.

Just simple, dumb fun with a set of very basic rules. Player characters vs Players as monster characters.

That would be much simpler and wouldn't require someone to develop a monster character to play, much less the developers to write the necessary code to support that type of progression.

Example:

1 player plays as a dragon
1 player plays as a lich
1 player plays as a _____

5 players characters enter the arena.

FIGHT!
