[UO Herald] Server Updates 02/02/11 - Multiple Shards

[UO News]

Greetings,

On Wednesday, 02/02/11, beginning at 11:00AM EST the following shards will experience rolling downtimes as we deploy hardware updates (in this order):

• Great Lakes
• Legends
• Catskills
• Siege Perilous

Downtimes will vary depending on the population of the shard and therefore we cannot provide an ETA; however, higher populations should expect potential downtimes up to 8 hours. Shards will become available once their upgrades are complete and we will work to have all upgrades completed by 6:00PM EST.

I think I, and others, were hoping for some more detail on what was going on and why it was necessary and how this all relates to the extensive, similar such things that've happened the last few weeks.

Looking back at what was said yesterday though, you probably merely meant that you'd post a rough schedule, and that you have done.

Hopefully this means the horrific lag I've been getting on siege since the last downtime is going away....I'm sick of re-logging due to getting stuck between servers on a server line.

Hardware upgrades..

They are probably moving the servers to aust... basically the opposite to what they did to oceania

West Coast servers will be moving to Sydney
Asian servers will be moving to Europe
European Servers will be moving to California
East Coast Servers will be moving to Japan
Oceania will be hosted at Scott-Amundsen Base in Antarctica.

Several people have urged you to communicate more, and these server upgrades are a great example.

At the beginning of the process you should have said something like this.

Hello UO players. Over the next few weeks/months we'll be slowly upgrading much of our server hardware in order to [insert reason here]. We'll try to have as little downtime as possible, but it might be rough going. We appreciate your patience.

As it stands now I was at first excited by what was going on, because it looked like money was being spent on UO. Then my hopes were, if not dashed, at least shaken by the series of problems that happened after.

I'm a techie. So what I'd like to know is what's being upgraded? CPUs? Hard-drives? What exactly is being improved with the servers.

Also, do these server stability issues have anything to do with the constant crashing that's being reported?
