UO Forum and active accounts

So I found out I think, that if you let your account go inactive, you can't post over on the official forums. I can log in, and read just fine but can't reply or start a post. Not sure if this is a new thing or not. Anyway, I'm glad everyone is enjoying this latest new thing, I've been reading about it but that's about it. I think after 23 years I'm finally done with production server UO. I won't be renewing my account. My production shard house will fall but it's nothing worth noting. Once that happens I'll log back in as an EJ and give away the Vet Reward choices I have , I believe there are 6 left, and all of my stuff on LA. I've mainly been a solo player all of these years, and recently found out about server emulation, I won't name it but I'm sure everyone knows what I"m referring to, and it works with the EC which is awesome. I got it all set up and it works as intended. Now I can just log in run around with zero lag and go goof off doing anything and everything whenever I feel like it. It gives me the UO "fix" that I need, after a s**t filled day in the real world.

I'll probably still lurk here once in a while though, and try not to be too much of a nuisance. Anyway, carry on..nothing to see here

@GarthGrey Good luck man! We had fun on Siege and I'm glad to see you ok. I had recalled to the island a few times recently and it looked unchanged so I worried you had stopped playing. I'd be interested to learn more about what system you setup if you have time to PM me about it. I tried one of the early emulation setups and it wasn't great but that has been over 10 years ago. If you havent closed all your accounts yet I'd encourage to bank as much as possible. I have taken extended vacations too, dropped to one acct last year but now I'm at 3 again, so the big may always bite you in the future. Take care, hope the family is well. I'll name a pirate ship after you, maybe Valar's Revenge or Garth's Ghost.

I did the server emulation thing a while back also. God for a day! Could do anything in the game, be invincible or vincible etc. A world of my own, and no lag at all. Then I realised that I was all alone, no other player in this world. This lasted a day or two. I delete the server and that was it.
Even if we play UO here and there and play mostly alone, we all still like to have others to interact one way or another, to play together, to help some one, to gripe, to grief, to steal, to pk, to do content side by side, to be UO friends. Any content, as long as there are other humans around to interact, at least some of the time.
The other aspect of the UO, is that it is a complete sand box, within the confines of the DM who in reality is Mrs Armstrong, and from time to time comes up with some nice surprises. It is truly a game you can call infinite, a never ending story. A game that has thousands of add-ons, complex dungeons, lands, waters a mini world with hundreds of adventures to participate in, that has taken 23 years to amass and put together and most importantly to tweak. It is the unpredictability of other people's behavior that makes it interesting also. Having your own server would be impossible to do all that.
I would keep just one account, its not overwhelming amount of money. Would not delete the homes you have of give away the vet rewards. At the least keep them in the bank if you decide to really quit. The very fact that you are posting here, shows that interaction with other people is of value to you. I fear that you will become pretty bored with your server, the god status etc, and will later may want to subscribe, minus your houses and vet rewards.
Also if you are considering the "UO freeshards"..They are about 1000 times more corrupt that UO, since they are not free at all as you may find out if you venture there. You pay major US$$ for many things there, in the majority of them. There is human interaction there, but much more negative than here in the majority of them. At least in UO there is a semblance of honesty, at least superficially in the Devs. Dishonesty and RMT is not Openly encouraged. Also if that is what is bothering you, just think of this this way : Most of us are not influenced by this, one way or another, and it is not rampant and most of us just do not lose sleep over RMT, Duping, Plat mungering etc.
UO is just fun for most of us.
I respect that you are not complaining about things with your post. You seem to be a good person, and we all hate to see good people leave.
I hope you change your mind and stay in the game, develop some UO friends and have fun.
You have stayed on for 23 years! That is awesome by itself.

A robust dedicated server isn’t cheap. If one was to gain any sizable population you’re talking about needing to spend $150-250/mo. on hosting it, and a separate server for hosting a website to support it. Creating subscription service would take them out of the grey legal area that UO Emulators fall in, so they basically do in house RMT, and sell perks, or ways to fast track character development similar to the in game Store.

It’s no less corrupt than what Broadsword is doing, in that sense, the goal is the same.... keep the server running.

I think he is talking about a private virtual server you can install on any PC and play that though. But agree they are not too cheap, the ones meant to be an MMO.

I've gone down that path myself and I'm astonished at the level of customer service and amazing looking content, it's really like being a noob again but without all the things that annoyed me and so many new things to do.

A lot of people get into server emulation to just see what they can create. We all have some great ideas and sometimes it is fun to just see it play out.

It has nothing to do with monetizing anything.

I would say a vast majority do it for personal pleasure and nothing more. Most shards never see the light of day and a lot of people simply want to "set up a place for me and my kids to play and remember".

Guess what..if you want to do that there are massive communities that help people do just that daily.

A lot of free shards that do make it have staff that work at major IT companies and got into coding because of UO and a desire to know "how it works".

At Serv** the whole point is learning C# while tinkering and building with UO. Nothing is sold there and everything is freely given. You play while also learning a real skill that is in demand in the real world.

The ignorance of over generalization is something that still holds back this aging UO community. While many are starting to open up and see things differently a few toxic old guard is what keeps a vast majority of UO players, today, off of Stratics.
