It's just additional background fiction for the Going Gumshoe quest, to explain why the ghost of Sage Humbolt appears as quest NPC, and why he knows about Khal Ankur...

A little bit of UO lore trivia: Sage Humbolt sacrificed himself during an event in 1998(!) to destroy the liche twins Lathiari and Kyrnia.
