It's probably just RNG but I have a theory. Understand it's just a theory and I have no proof of this. I think that resource gems are alotted to specific amounts over time so if you are mining in an area that is mined frequently maybe the alotted number has been used up. It may well be a coincidence but it seems to me that if I mine where no one else mines I do better.

Too add to his question...I'm gm mining (and wearing +5 gloves), and when I single-click a tool to select "Mine for ore and gems", it says I can't...what gives there? Isn't gem mining based solely off of your skill level?

There's TWO kinds of Gems.

1. The large gems, used in ML crafting recipes and some imbuing
and
2. The normal gems, that can be bought and sold at the jeweler, that are used in Imbuing.

Mining in ANY manner can bring up #1.

The setting "Mine for Ore and Gems" is to mine up the second, older types of small gems, instead of the normal ore, every few swings, and requires GM mining, being Stygian Abyss enabled, and (most importantly) Reading the book to mine gems that can only be bought in the Ter Mur Royal City, from the blacksmiths there. (and you will still occasionally get the large gems to drop in the process).

I had this a few days ago. After logging out, closing the client, then restarting it, and logging back in, the streak ended and I got gems, blackrock and crystalline blackrock again.

Also on GM miner with gloves and shovel set to ore only, but in Ter Mur.

I just mined a little and got a dark saphire so it must just be you :) The book doesn't geet you more ML gems but you will start getting diamonds, rubys, emeralds, saphire, tourmaline, citrine, amber etc

so how do you get it to mine up #1? lets say i want ore and some turquoise; is that the default when GM mining? or is there a setting i need to do or book i need to read? thanks

That is the default setting for mining. No book needed, just patience and luck (or good RNG)

Resource collecting such as the ML gems, white pearl, brilliant amber, crystalline blackrock etc seems to have wide variations in how much you find. I often go mining with my smith miner and just fill up my blue beetle once or twice and get one or two ML gems and maybe a crystalline blackrock or two. Recently I got 3 perfect emeralds, a tuquoise, and a dark spahire and a crystalline blackrock in one packlload. A while back I went fishing for about an hour and got like 6 white pearl and multiple maps and nets. The past few days I went fishing for an hour each day and got no white pearl and not enough new sos to replace the ones I fished up.

When I recently returned to UO, I wanted to train up imbuing and change my main crafter to a gargoyle...

Since I had to fit in 120 imbuing to my already cramped crafter's template, I read up on all the race specifics traits. Humans have Jack of Trades, Elves seem to be more lucky when finding special resources (according to Mythic's UO website), and Gargoyles are better at enhancing and imbuing...

So I did a big switcheroo on my characters. I created an Elf crafter character which received my mining and lumberjacking skills, and I put all my crafting skills on my Gargoyle crafter...

What race is your miner? If you're human or gargoyle, you may notice a decrease in finding special resources due to the above. I find if I go out collecting lumber or ore, I'm doing fine with my elf...
