Unable to see characters at log-in

Trying to log in to collect my V-day gifts, I am finding that some older characters that I seldom if ever use are invisible to me at log-in. I cannot see any picture at all, neither the character itself, nor any of the surrounding environment. All I see is a grey screen - not even a char paperdoll I can use to log out again. Sometimes if I restart UO and return to that character, it appears at East Brit Bank and I can proceed from there; other times, no matter how many times I restart UO, the character stays hidden.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a remedy for it?
