Hi guys,

How is Ultima Online going? This is one of the most classic mmo game I know about and just wanted to know if a lot of people are still playing it. What's the game population like? Will there be an UO 2 or will they be upgrading their graphics engine?

Incoming: minimum 2+ page thread with no clear answers to your questions and no response from a developer. Welcome to the UO community!

I'll try to answer based on my own perceptions. The population goes up and down different times of the year. There are a lot of people with active subscriptions who don't log in very often. Most of the current playerbase have invested a TON into this game and won't be quitting any time soon.

As far as UO2, rumors are always buzzing but nothing official has been said in a very long time.

In comparison to Mortal Online, UO is a thriving lush community of players. Estimates of ~50,000 subs are still touted around.

And of those 50k subs, 44.8k are multis, 5k are inactive players holding onto rares and luna houses and the rest... actual players.

There was an updated client with different graphics (whether or not these different graphics were an update, a regression, or a lateral move is technically a matter of opinion).

It is known as the Enhanced Client. Not many use it as far as I can tell, but those that do seem to like it a lot.

UO's population is surely down from its peak but that's not a fair comparison. There's no sign the game is any particular danger (because rumor mongering on Stratics doesn't count as a "sign"). The number of people you see tends to fluctuate widely. Some shards (servers) are small but seem to really like it that way. Two, Great Lakes and Atlantic, are still known as being comparatively large, especially Atlantic.

The figure we use is about 50,000, partly because it just feels like it's right, and partly because anonymous but credible-seeming blog posts claiming to be from insiders have used it. Also, the last official figure we had was 100,000, just before the release WHO. (Unfortunately, folks didn't believe this even though there was no reason not to.)

UO's player community remains right on the edge of crazy. Responses to this post have already begun to reflect that.

You can expect that people will use this thread as an excuse to talk about their favorite pet gripes, proposals, and accusations.

Galen makes good points.

This game has more stuff to do than your whole group will accomplish and you can choose, by shard, to meet your groups level of interaction based on your competitiveness or need for larger interaction within a community. Or if you find you have chosen unwisely you can pack the whole bunch up and relocate to another shard that will suit you better.

Welcome

I didn't think you were capable of even thinking such words, how deeply must the wound go for you to go into such sophisms...

It really depends both on time of year and shard. Some nights I log on and there is tons going on. Other nights well not so much. But I do have a core of people that I really like to do things with so I am never really without something to do. I played back in the pre-Trammel days and came back to the game 3 years ago or so. Let me tell you the changes have been huge. I had to completely relearn the game, but there were plenty of people that helped me out doing that. Its still fun, its still a sandbox and despite all the issues that it has its still brining many of us in. Try giving your old shard a shout in forums or give me a shout and come play on Chesy you might find out how much fun it is and stay.
