Ultima Online: Renaissance - The Nightmare of Cantabrigian

I, for one, do not remember this movie.

I remember the plotline, though. It was the in-character reason for Trammel, and less directly for Factions. A world free of Minax. Minax couldn't be held off in Fel. Truth is, of course, that Minax held sway over the citizenry long before she ever thought of charging in and taking over in a kind of official, political sense.

Huh. I don't remember that either. Looks like recycled U9 cutscenes. LB is way to old for that period of time in UO.

It was indeed made of recycled U9 cutscenes, although it was recycled from the cutscenes that were cut from the game with a random image of Minax pasted in. The entire movie consists of things The Guardian was to show LB to make him distrust The Avatar. In fact, LB on the balcony was used in several videogame magazine's preivews for U9, and other parts of the video were used in promo matieral for the game as well originally.

For those truly interested in the connection, most of the video is actually the rest of the Pyros-summoning cutscene; it was intended as showing what the Avatar was doing in other worlds to horrify LB rather than be an impossible addition to the final game that completely ignores the fact that Pyros was destroyed in U8.

I remember hearing about an alleged new intro movie at the time, though never saw it materialize.

Seeing that its mostly choppily edited (and ill-fitting) UIX footage, I'm glad it wasn't officially released.

Nice find though!

The only thing I remember from that time is praying that my shard would stay up long enough for us to get housing enabled on Tram, and then to get a house and hope it takes and not wake up the next day to a major revert.

One weird thing I noticed....Very picky.

Lord British there appears to be sleeping in his castle's Great Hall.

My reading is that this was a feature of the early Middle Ages; in the little film they even have the bed surrounded by curtains which I remember reading about. (How Kings and Queens had sex in their Great Hall without courtiers at least listening is beyond me. Was it in U9 that British was nailing his scullery maid or something?)

UO is a blend of different time periods but the time period I associate with this practice is way too early to be reflected in UO.

It is a castle servant, Nell, in Ultima VII that Lord British was "nailing." She was engaged to a man named Carrocio when she cheated with LB. The illicit union created a child which was born before Underworld II, the child was LB's but the then-husband-of-Nell didn't know it.

Virtuewise, this was a case of "Do as I say, not as I do" for LB. I'm sure he lost an eighth...

As for the great hall, no, that's actually what LB's bedroom looks like in Ultima IX. Huuuuuuge and empty.

Nice to see again.
I remember watching it a few times when it was released as the intro movie to UO Renaissance ~ 10 years ago (the .mpg file on the CD copy I am able to reference is dated March 14 2000).

Wasn't just LB that had nightmares over Ren, I lost quite a bit of sleep over it as well :D

Who's he think he is, Arnold Schwarzenegger?

God-damned Kings.

I hope he lost way more Karma than we had to lose fighting those heart-eater things in Ter Mur.

So wait wait....That's not a Great Hall, that's actually a dedicated bedroom, and the King of Britannia just likes to sleep in a space that serves to remind everyone and himself that his life is so pathetically empty that he bangs servants?

I played Ultima 9 part of the way but I guess I never noticed.

"There comes a time, Avatar, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a King's lust for an engaged servant girl who can't say no and whose life will likely be ruined down the road."

Damn, Lord British was a hypocritical piece of ****!
