Ultima Online, Abandoned Ware? Really?

The GameSpy website recently published an article that doesn't even acknowledge the fact that Ultima Online is an active game.

While it's true that some folks prefer UO before certain significant changes, writing an article based entirely on experiences playing a free shard, including no links or references to the official, supported game is poor writing indeed.

I had no choice but to offer my rebuttal in Lord Raven's blog.

Good to see someone in the community posting a rebuttal to a poorly researched and irresponsible article. Shame on IGN and GameSpy for allowing it, which is probably a case of them trolling for site hits.

I am a Twitter addict, and that's where I originally saw the link to the offending article. I Tweeted my blog rebuttal and did get a "sort-of" reply from the author. Here's a transcript:

I also included @EA (the EA twitter account) in the original tweet, but since it's a holiday weekend, I doubt anyone there will see it. I plan on re-tweeting next week, and possibly even sending a link to the EA/UO marketing folks. That was a perfect chance for EA to plug UO for free.

In fact, the only Tweets I see on the EA feed are for their other games. Never a tweet about UO. However to be fair, UO does get Tweeted on @uoherald and @mythicnews so maybe there is some corporate division of labor going on in the marketing dept.

Next week, I'll push ahead with the Twitter campaign and add @uoherald and @mythicnews to the tweet just to see if they are listening.

And kids... if you ever come across a link to an article about UO, let 'ol Nordberg know won't ya! (PM me) I just have this to say to anyone that trash talks UO:

the fact is that the game is fully supported by EA, and the changes represent the companies continual investment in the Ultima Universe.

Someone posted about this last week. I sent a message via gamespy's contact us.
Asked them if it was their normal policy to allow promotion of activities that were in breach of game's producer's terms of service. Plus of course pointing out that UO very much NOT abandoned.

It's still a relative issue in my opinion...

at least until we get an official word from EA !

A game that rakes in millions per month and cannot produce one single upgraded, hackless client like many free games have done...

I could be convinced...
