Turkey maps compared to regular T-maps

T-map would be much easier to find if they had the same look and feel of these turkey maps.

Thank You, that is all

They do have the same look and feel at least in the EC
It at least lets you know if you're close with these turkey maps. I have to use MS paint every single time I run a treasure map.

We were just talking about this. The Treasure maps could use this little help system. Would have been a good add to them.

I'm having no troubles at all finding t-maps using the classic client and UO Cartographer. I often find them first dig by just comparing landmarks and judging positions...

Yep, same here. No problem at all with doing normal maps in the classic client. Just takes a little practice and you can guess where the spot is pretty quick.

Its hard to explain how I do it so quick, as I was trying to a new T Hunter on my shard once, but its just works and practice makes it perfect.

Whereas my character, ironically the GUILDMASTER of my shard's THB, can't find Treasure maps even if standing on the exact spot another character later digs up the same map at.

I brought up the Turkey map location system at the Town Hall as well, and was wondering from the release of the T-map revision on Stratics why it was not used.

The excuse I was given is that the data wasn't shared by Sakkarah (who designed it on her own time, not at work) before she left, so while they can turn the Turkey system on and off, as-is (tweaking the monster), adapting the system for another use would require a copy of the uncompiled code, and probably require paying Sakkarah for it (which would incur a bunch of legal difficulties, since she works under contract with a different game company now).

Uhm .. lol ...
They need to have the uncompiled code anyway how else can they make additions without compiling it again?

Isn't that what I said????

They can toggle it off and on, as the compiled code was never actually REMOVED from the game - which is why if you did a Turkey map the day after the official end of the 2009 incarnation, and popped a turkey from the map (using a brush that hadn't timed out yet), the Turkey spawned, then instantly despawned. It's also why you could still turn in plucked turkeys since then, if you still had one.

They can also change the ATTRIBUTES of the creature that spawns (as it's in the monster database, in the same format as the other creatures - not integral to the event code itself).

But, without the uncompiled code, they can't alter it to add new items (well, they COULD change the old items to new ones, but it would immediately change ALL the existing ones to the new version as a result), replace the turkey without giving the "Giant Turkey" ID in the database a new entry replacing the original, or use the map code in a different area (like for T-maps - after all, the Turkey maps ARE set locations, and the code would have to be altered further for the new random location system).

I have not problems finding regular T-Maps with the EC without using Cartographer or screenshots in paint or such crutches. I do however have 100 Mining.

Is UO really built that differently?

Most software you write the code then compile it together. Linking in precompiled code is not often done I guess.

As UO should be in a scripting language it seems even more unlikely that they would compile the turkey code on its own then implement it.

To my knowledge (and with some thinking for an analogy) the best physical comparison I could give for the code structure is a bird's nest that's been used for several consecutive years... thousands of small pieces of varying materials intertwined just enough to keep the structure from collapsing completely, with new chunks added on when holes pop up.

You really always need to keep in mind they were planning for the game to only last for a year or two.

I like the way the Turkey maps work as far as the you are close messages and the like...

but to be 100% honest.... I have a thunter and using the maps and the UOCartographer I haven't had a bit of trouble finding any treasure or digging it up. Perhaps folk need to take a class in mapreading 101

Yeah, since you can ace maps that means everyone else is daft.

Perfect logic.

I think what is funnier is that it'd be damn near impossible without external applications. The maps aren't even tilted to match up with the North and South used by the compass and map in the EC.

With all of the nice additions to the loot, actually digging the treasure now is much more frustrating. It's better than the recall to spot and dig method, but not by much.

I don't mind having the hunt part in treasure hunting, but not giving in game methods of accurately finding the spots without mindless clicking is absurd.

On this I'd have to agree... to a certain extent...

UO Cartographer (not UO Approved but legal as far as I know) or UO Automap (which is UO Approved) are free for everyone to use, so these are both viable tools for someone to use to find themselves the map spots, if they take the few minutes of time which are needed to actually install it...

However, if someone has objections to using both of these tools for whatever reason, it should be viable for someone to dig up a map using ingame tools. Unfortunately the classic's client radar is not up to that in any way. You're forced to use the EC client, which has a radar that CAN be tilted and resized for better searching...

Fair point...

I think it's a matter of them being unable to change anything about that classic radar, either because they don't know how to change it, or there are simply code restrictions in place which prevent additional functionalities. The last point makes sense, or they would've changed the radar a long time ago when the first versions of UO Automap appeared...

It is sad that this will quickly become another beaten dead horse, because it seems nobody cares, but ...

I have left maps on the ground out of frustration trying to find some of them. One map was in a deep in a jungle and, even with UO Cart and every tip offered by others, I could not find the chest. What a waste of two hours I could have spent on a fishing quest. :)

Yes, there should be somethign in-game to notify you that you are at least 1,000 tiles away from the location. :)

Oh, BTW MalagAste, I play on GL and some maps are actually difficult or impossible to find no matter what method you use. We are still getting maps for chests located under someone's house. A mapreading course will not help that, especially if UOCart is a prerequisite. I'm certain the developers intend for us to be able to find these maps without having to use an outside tool.

The nearby and very close hints are grand on the orinthologist maps even if just to say "dont give up!" :)

I think it disappears immediately after you dig it up. If not, as soon as you destroy the last egg/loot the bag.

Deja Vu.

Covert answered your question correctly. Every turkey map I have completed vanishes as soon as the nest appears. No, it can not open anymore because it is gone.
