Trying to get on my feet in UO but cant

After about 4 years of not playing i have rejoined the Ultima Online Community on the Atlantic shard. I had a couple of characters still intact from when i last played and was excited to jump in. My problem after playing for about a month is i cant make any money and the money i can make is no where even close to enough to buy anything in UO's ridiculously inflated market. I have only been doing things pretaining to hunting such as peerless, killing swoops for marty's (despite killing them for days straight without 1 marty), killing tsuki wolves for cash, ect but no matter what i try its no where even close to enough. So i am asking y'all to help me by posting the best ways of making money. Currently I am thinking of making a miner and selling the ingots because in years past that has seemed to make alot of money maybe taking up lumberjacking also for wood gathering. I really want to be able to buy decent stuff instead of using practically the worst gear. Any advice is appreciated!

consider training up a crafter. Powder of Fortifying (a fairly low end Smith reward) and Clothing Bless deeds (rewards from some of the lower cloth LBODs) are good income makers. Any ingots left over are also good for selling to Players via vendors - they messed up the price that you get from NPCs to stop an exploit where some people could trick an NPC into selling for less than their buyback price.

Do note that on many shards, the introduction of the Greater dragon has so impacted leather gathering in general, that Horned and barbed leather prices have tripled or more since you left, and if you can find a good place to farm drakes or wyverns without the greater dragons getting in the way (While riding a beetle - the Bags of sending also got screwed up in a misguided effort to reduce scripting gold), you can bring in a decent amount of Horned leather & gold.

Besides what Basara points out, bones can be somewhat lucrative in bulk ... last I knew on LA it was 100gp each. Sold in lots of 1 or 5K on a commodity deed, you can do nicely.

Easy kills for the most part to get them. I scout New Haven for anyone training skills. If that's empty I clean out the zombies there, then do Deceit real fast, cut 'em up all the bones I get, stash them and head out to the challenges of bigger prey.

If your really into hunting to pay the UO bills try some higher end monsters or some monsters you can kill really quickly. One of my favorite cash critters is Ice Fiends. I hunt them with my mage and using a demon slayer spell book I can kill them with 1 explosion flame strike combo. (BOOM 800 gp)

If your more of a dexer type get yourself a ogre or repond slayer weapon and hunt Ogre Lords or Arctic Ogre Lords. These can be killed quickly and give about 600 gp per kill.

Lastly since your playing on Atlantic, this Sunday, go to Luna bank around 4:00 pm and look for a member of The Syndicate LLTS. They will be opening gates to their craftsmen day event and they will be glad to help you out with a new weapon or 2 and possibly some updated armor. All free of charge. Heck they will probably recruit you and help you out even more!

You seem to be on the right track with thinking about lumberjacking and mining; especially with the new colored boards, a GM lumberjack can do awesome given some time, though it is incredibly boring at times. Myself, I always go lumberjacking someplace safe so I can read a book while I do it, lol. Tsuki wolves are good for farming gold, esp because they can be cut up for plain leather, and they drop bones, peculiar seeds and the occasional slayer. If you have a mage or tamer, trogs in the painted caves are an awesome farm, but they spawn almost too fast to collect on. Aside from those, though, it'll be pretty tough making money in combat until you can afford better armor.

Another avenue you might want to consider is IDOCing. When I first came back last year, after a several years hiatus, I was in the same spot as you. A got especially lucky one day with an IDOC, in which I found 33 checks for a mil each. Since then I've collected millions more in checks from idocs, not to mention rares and some great armor. Some people might not consider it the noblest way to get on your feet, but on the other hand you may well preserve some otherwise doomed mote of UO history, so its a toss-up.

No matter how you go about it, don't give up. Its worth it.

Ohhh! trogs! Average >400 gold and good for Paladin as well. I lure 2 or 3 to the front near the entrance and slowly fill the floor. Rinse & repeat. Soul Seeker and EoO seem to do right nicely on them.

If you are a fighter..
With a soulseeker in hand and a blue beetle underneath ya...head to cyclopean temple in ilshenar and start knocking off Titans and Cyclops and stuff. 40k an hour would be a low end estimate.
Or, again with soulseeker in hand, Orc Brutes in the orc cave level 3...kill them and pile up the shadow iron ore then after hunting recall in with your miner wearing an mask of orcish kin and smelt the ore and throw the ingots on a vendor.

This is just basic gold gathering of course because if you earn/win one Artifact in the doom gauntlet you can sell it for 50% off those inflated Luna prices and still make a cool quick couple million.

Oh and be careful where ya shop... take the time to look around for lower priced vendors that are out of the way...there are a few of us on Atlantic left keeping the prices on the lower end.

Well, there are ways to make money, which you will find out over time. Most money can be made by doing tedious and repetitive things, or by spending a lot of your online time with trading rares and artifacts.

What I recommend:

You should not give a rat's arse about money. Caring about gold and items in game will suck you into a tedious treadmill that makes you blind for the real fun and adventures in game. Let me explain...

I was in the same situation as you are. It took me 9 months until I finally was able to get good gear and a good weapon, and other players still are much better equipped. Whenever I die I lose about 6000 gp insurance. And still I was wondering how to improve my equipment to be able to compete.

I recently was res-killed by someone from another guild (guild war system) 15 times in a row, and lost over 90k insurance. I then thought, what the hell am I doing? Why do I pressure myself with all this idiotic item crap, while running around in standard equipment would be so much more relaxing? Is my goal in game really to be able to kill a Greater Dragon all by myself?

As I have a GM tailor, I crafted some fine high quality barbed leather armor (without any magic properties) which gives me decent resists. And no, I won't insure my equipment anymore. 'Cause if I lose anything, I can easily craft it anew. The only thing I am insuring is my weapon, a fine blade with a special engraving, which means a lot to me.

We recently went down into a dungeon with a group of people, wearing no armor at all (just clothing) and using an NPC weapon. We worked ourselves through the dungeon levels, slaying monsters and improving our equipment with monster loot. It was one of the most fun adventures in a long time! Covetous became fun and a challenge!

I recommend to change your perspective, and you may enjoy UO more than before...
