[14/06/04][18:23:48] [Malik]: square one. countless new players have quit the game over this. My question is... .why is it allowed?

One thing that I take away from this is that Mesanna does care as evidenced by the people she offered to help after the meeting. However, it should be noted that as a pay to play service we should have expectations for the hand that help you. While it is true that we can not pay: but if we do play we should expect a good and improving product.

The one major problem i see with this is that Mesanna's only fix to serious problems is "email me"
While i value how devoted she is, these problems should be fixed for good. helping 50 players personally doesnt put a dent in the transfer bug problem, but that seems to be the only fix.

It seems messana should have someone doing the multitude of things she tells people to email her personally for. theres no way she can help everyone and its very frustrating to know theres only a slim chance your problem will actually be fixed.

We need GMs full time who can fix ALL the problems that our only current option is to "email mesanna" and cross our fingers, knowing that most likely nothing will come of it.

I was holding out hope that once Broadsword came along the GM service would be handled by them and not EA. I would love to see they day when all GM's are players of the game who ARE trusted folks who do not abuse the powers they have. The players who come in under F2P usualy stay a few months this would add to abandoned houseing..

Steam has the option of getting rid of cheating in Ultima Online once and for all thanking to the Valve Anti-Cheat but it will not be mandatory ?

I hope this means that the Dev Team has other aces up their sleeves to counter cheating in UO be it scripting, or duping or hacking or else.....

Interesting stuff. It's great that they do these talks, but it saddens me a little that most folks are completely unaware of them. More transparent communication from the team would go leaps and bounds, and it would really punctuate Broadsword's commitment to reinvigorating the game. I heard that they weren't interested in hiring a community manager, which strikes me as quite odd. The organization and communication of information to players is an incredibly valuable thing, especially here in the era of the NOW. It goes a long way to fostering good will in your community. Rant aside, there were some good bits of information and an overall feeling of hope on the horizon. Still, there've been we'll sees, maybes, working on its, and stay tuneds for a long, long time. Here's to hope.

The guy in the balron room on Oceania with his multi-char setup has been down there killing balrons in 3 seconds all day everyday for weeks if not months now. He´s there right now bashing away.
And he didn´t react at all last night when some reptiles discovered that room. He just took the death on all six.
People have paged on him, myself included and he´s still there with his setup farming away. And with his kind of setup it shouldn´t matter if he can respond to a GM, it takes a minute to see it´s as shady as it gets.

And I can name at least 4 dragons that are used on Atlantic to farm arties AFK that has been on daily for weeks. There are more, I just can´t remember their names atm.

All new systems introduced have high potentials. Too bad there always seems to be a loophole for some players to exploit. 'Tis a shame.

There is so wide a base of them its not funny.. and not just UO suffers from them.
Where ever there is money to be made this kind will be there.
You cant eliminate them completely.
That is fact.
If the Dev went full boar on the cheats, and bots who milk the game there would be no other work done.
From the first days when people found others in game willing to give them real life money for items it was easy to get the race was won by them. Greed will win just about every time. No matter if you stop them one way they will create another to do just the same thing.
It truly is a never ending battle.
As a counselor I can atest that I had nabbed many turned in cheats by players.
GM's gave out bans like candy some days... it was a never ending go round.
So dont think they will stop nabing them but the true way is to not buy from them...
They will stop if no one buys the items they hawk..
Most times its a scam and will 9 out of 10 times lead to them hacking your account or bank card.

a simple program could be run that would deter 90percent of cheats. if the devs value those who will only play with cheats, then that is sad.

Even the mighty have had hell to get rid of cheats.
My play in WoW has taught me that much.

That's why I think the deterrants should be tougher against cheating and if tougher deterrants were not enough, then even tougher ones should be made. If a player agrees to playing a game under the conditions set by the playing agreement and such agreed conditions do not include allowing to cheat or dupe or script and so forth, well, then doing it should not be tolerated, IMHO.....

The thing is, that either one is strict to apply the no cheating policy from early on and so that game will get renowned for the zero tolerance to cheating in it or if the voice might spread among players that cheating is not much opposed in a given game, things might get out of hands and it might then become quite hard to bring the problem under control again....

So, basically, to counter the scripter, you or someone else lured things to the room and got him killed? When I first farmed down there, I was invising a guy's greater so he couldn't get kills on the evil mages. He eventually responded by luring the reptiles, Exodus Minions, and Balron. It did him no good (though I did die when I came back in later) - I managed to get out of there with my (then non-bonded) greater dragon intact, while killing some of the lured monsters. Now I just do it in Fel's Blackthorn Castle because hardly anyone on Lake Superior goes there.

EVERYBODY who goes down there farms afk. Myself included...though I have to pay more attention since I don't run a script or use the hiding skill: I watch how long is left on my Invisibility. When it has 10-30 seconds left, I re-cast it, hit my "follow" and "guard" macros, then target self. Repeat until bored.

Which part? The invis'ing thing? Difference is, I'm actually there doing it - I'm too dumb to run a script that loops the casting & the two macros, so I watch the timer and recast when it's about to run out, while occasionally chatting & healing the drag if he's taken a little damage; it does have some risks, unfortunately (the mages can flag on me while my drag is elsewhere. If that happens, I run to the door if needed, close it, then log out to bring my greater to me.) If you mean what I did to the other player, meh - he's ALWAYS down there afk farming, only he uses the hiding skill (which I tried yesterday, but it didn't work for me)...not to mention that I do it in Felucca because I get them all to myself, so there's the risk of getting killed as well (or, it would be one, if people actually went there...)

It's not like I do it unattended. I just check Twitter, FB, and another site for 30 seconds while invis'd (which we've all done), then go back to the game.

Kind of a disappointing log to read. Only thing worth reading for me was the MIB loot upgrade, and the fact that, one day, the Shame re-vamp loot will be everywhere. Why they haven't done that already is beyond me.

I want to make one request regarding marketing. Make sure someone, a dev, a player, etc, someone records the VvV play tests. Put it on YouTube. Treat UO PvP like something important. Get it out there like UO is a modern game. If you guys believe in UO and think players will join despite all of the hacks and scripts, then put it forefront and center.

The thing I'm disappointed about most is this game is truly dominated by cheaters. It's been this way for over a decade and I know it's a moot point, but it's a fact. Nothing significant has been done to my memory since Draconi famously burned down houses, and then he was fired. So...look, either EA will not let you guys go after cheaters or it's just impossibly hard, but...given we will likely never see the exploits removed, you are going to need to market the hell out of VvV to get any would be PvPers back to this game. I know the current emphasis is to weed the existing crop and not worry about refreshing the soil, but I don't know. This IS a game people want to play, there just isn't any marketing to help combat the negatives people are going to spout (and negatives that are unfortunately going to keep popping up).

Guy from outside is like, this game is full of cheaters, graphics haven't been updated since 1997 (sorry, the EC/SA is still a loser IMO), and hardly anyone plays. Where is UO on Twitter? Where is UO on YouTube? You search YouTube and most of the results are from free shards. Just irks me. There is so much potential FREE marketing that can be done.

a background program that constantly runs that checks for 3rd party programs could do a much more consistent jobs than 1000 gms. sure would get around it, if you make it 10 times harder to do something, chances are a good portion wont bother.

an anti cheat like what they have on steam would deter a very good portion of scripting that goes on in UO.

we arent talking about duping or scamming, cause no average anti cheat could prevent those things.

I know more would find pvp rewarding if they werent up against razor clients.
I know more would find pvm rewarding if the price of items werent devestated by script players. (example - shame loot, minax arties. i judge minax would be twice the value, shame loot 4 times the value if it werent for script farmers.)


Another route to go is Allow scripting. that way no one will have to "hide" and the "average player" cant complain that they have to compete against cheaters with computer skills high enough to beat an anti-cheat system.

Just because you happen to not like a topic doesn't mean it's worthy of moderation. The community should decide organically what is and isn't worth discussing, not one person's opinion on the topic. It's pretty arrogant, as a moderator, to believe that your opinion on something should dictate whether or not an idea has a discussion platform here. If the community don't feel like an idea is worthy of discussion, no-one will reply to it and it'll fall off page 1 pretty quickly. However if people do want to discuss it then that should be their prerogative to do so, providing that discussion is conducted within the framework of the rules of course.

If anything, Mesanna's answer here vindicates all prior discussions that were locked because those discussions could be central to shaping ideas about a future F2P UO model or could highlight areas that may be problematic in any such considerations. I feel it's really important to allow open discussion on these core issues as both sides of the fence have interesting points and even if outright F2P is undesirable subsequent discussion could evolve the idea into something that would work better for the game. That can never happen if no-one is allowed to talk about it on the de facto official boards.

Those people who dislike them are free to exercise their right not to read them. A lot of discussions here have made me facepalm over the years, but that doesn't mean I think they should be locked. It's a forum comprised of a diverse range of people with a diverse set of opinions. People will argue and bicker. It's what people do. It's what often can lead to the best set of compromises for a feature or direction. Without such discussions, you essentially end up with a feature or system without any opportunity for player input at all. I'd take a player-refined feature over purely an EA/Broadsword delivered one most of the time. (I said most!)

Organically = naturally occurring. Discussions that no-one has any interest in talking about any longer due to it being totally played out will die a natural death anyway should that actually be the case. There's probably a handful of diehards who would talk about certain things until the cows came home though, but I don't really see it as being detrimental if there are people still willing to engage them.

If there were defined threads for these seemingly recurring topics it may actually prevent people trying to turn every single thread into a client or F2P debate, lol. That's prob. most annoying when threads regardless of topic degenerate into your usual arguments.

Not intending to come off as a smart alek here or anything but if ya look closely I am merely an Atlantic Shard News Reporter, not a Moderator. Which basically means the only "power" I have is being able to put NEWS before a heading on a thread and use those square brackets [ ] where they are needed.

However, even Moderators at times can have an contradicting opinion on a matter and still do what is right via both the Community and TOS/ROC at times. Just because someone holds a personal opinion it does not mean they reflect that differing opinion in the duties of their job. Maybe they need to have people send in their questions ahead of time and let them filter out the stupidity first.

They tried that at one point and were flamed a good bit and accused of weeding out the tough questions. Personally I found the accusations highly unlikely, but to each their own. They are kinda in a lose/lose situation like that at times. But, the meet and greets are open to anyone who wants to be there. If folks want smarter questions asked then they should gather a few friends, each take a "smart question" from the brainiac in the crowd and attend one of them. I applaud what they are doing though.... it does take *clears throat* balls to chat with players in real time about issues that are in the game. Folks who have actually conducted Q&A's with the employees at a major company about the direction the company is heading definitely understand.
