What's the best way to train resist? Currently I'm spamming myself with Mana Vampire but gains are really slow.

Go to New Haven.
Gather up as many spectral spellbinders from nearby Old Haven as you can. They cast curses exclusively, no offensive spells.
Take them all to the marble Companion hall in the northwest corner of Old Haven.
Stand on the steps and let them do their business.
Between seven and nine spellbinders is perfect !

I'm trying it out and it seem to work. already got a few gains. only found like 5 or 6 spectral thingys though

They changed the number of these that spawn now, you will only find five or six i believe
When your resist hits 80 or so, cast protection on yourself. If you're not a mage, you'll need someone to make you two protection scrolls, one to put the spell on, the other to take it off. Protection lowers your magic resist, thus allowing you to gain faster.
I've never had a problem finding 8 or so spellbinders, though you do sometimes have to go and hunt for them. I used a boat, that works too
