IM at about 62.3 fishing and people said in other posts go out to the ocean and fish. I got out there and I cannot catch anything. Says I fish for awhile but catch nothing.

I dont gain skill either and gains are really slow on land.

Anyone have any clue?

You need to get to about 70ish before you start deep water. 60-70 is almost as bad as 95-100. So just keep casting away.

I seem to remember having a similar problem. Don't quote me, but I think people advised me to try sailing right down the server line (which I think isn't considered deep water).

Of course, to think about it--that might have been far enough back that I was trying to utilize some old 8x8 methods, too. :p

Water close to a server line is considdered to be shallow water. Try to fish there and your gains should be fine. (If they are coming too slow/slow down just fish a few tiles further away from it.) Theres no need/sense to fish in deep water below 80 fishing.

My understanding of fishing training was that you don't fish deep water until you are at 80 fishing. I trained using the server line running south then back north from buc's den as there was less 'traffic' on that line, and a good point to launch the boat about 20 tiles away. I would go down one side of the line and back up the other.

i was fishing off of docks until about 68ish when i headed out to the deep sea

as it was said above, its really slow in this range, as bad as 95-100, cept more boring cause you wont get any sea serpents or anything

just keep casting, its a long slow skill thou

Havent played in a while but there was a trick to fishing gains. you will get .1 every time you catch a fish. the trick was something like this. take boat along server line fish one hex at a time. ie cast if no catch move boat one hex, cast again, when you make catch go 8 hexes cast you will catch again, go 8 more you catch again, and so on. this works on N-S and E-W server lines. if you dont catch on the 8th hex you had to go the other way 8 hexes. so backtrack 16 and you will find the fish there, then continue that direction 8 and so on. im pretty sure it was 8 hexes it may have been 6-10 but you can test by casting each hex after the first catch and counting, once you know the number its always the same. youll be at 100 in no time.

What you are describing is 8x8ing, it no longer works.
They removed that and a number of other little tricks, and changed the way gains on a lot of things worked.

Fishing and Taming are (as far as I can tell) the last remaining 2 skills that you actually have to work at.
You just fish until you clearly aren't gaining from land or along the server line, and then move to deep water. Gains on success will be quick there but success is rare - so it evens out. As you get into the 80s it picks up some, and falls back off in the 90s.

On the bright side, if you are killing the sea serpents you fish up you should have a lot of level 1 maps to turn in or dig up(or both) by the time you GM. ;)
