Hello I am a New Theif to Seige, I have been wondering for some time how exactly do you town steal. It seems to me that about 1/3 of the time i get away with it the rest i get guard wacked, im sure im not failing the steal cuse its usuly low weight items, what am i doing wrong?
You aren't doing anything wrong. There are 4 outcomes of stealing:
Noticed Steal
Unnoticed Steal
Noticed Fail
Unnoticed Fail
If you make a successful steal, most of the time it will be noticed. You successfully steal the item, but you turn "grey". This means you can't leave the area, and you can be freely attacked/robbed.
When you make an unnoticed steal, you stay "blue" (or green if in a guild). This means that you will not be attackable or freely robbable, there are no guards (you can spam guards yourself afterwards, they won't come), and no system message saying, "You noticed blahblah attempting to steal...". If someone, even the victim, was to attack you, they can have the guards called on them. However, anytime you even attempt to make a steal, whether noticed or unnoticed, successful or failed, you are considered "criminal" and cannot leave the area for 2 minutes.
Fails work the same way, but you don't get the item.
Guard whacking can be instant or triggered. If there are no NPCs around you, then unless someone is near you to call guards themselves (or if you stupidly say "guards" yourself), then you will not be guard whacked, grey or not. An NPC or player must be there to trigger guards within 10 seconds of the steal. Instant whacks happen because an NPC's "guard macro" is triggered by a noticed steal attempt.
However, sometimes only select NPC's will notice. This works the same for players. For example, if you made a steal in front of myself and another player, I could get the system message, and he might not get it. As long as one player, or NPC, notices you, you will turn "grey" to all. This is why you might turn grey near an NPC, but not get instantly whacked, because that specific NPC didn't notice.
If guard whacked in a GZ (yes it is possible to make it out of the GZ, and still get whacked), the item is returned to the victim. If you are grey and get killed inside of a GZ, the item is returned to the victim. That is why you should never hide in a GZ after making a steal.
Steals have many factors that can occur to make it unnoticed. The lower the stones of the item, the higher the chance of getting an unnoticed steal. The more unmedable armor (you shouldn't wear unmedable armor in the first place) that you are wearing, the higher chances of being noticed, and failing. And of course, the higher your stealing skill is, the higher chances of getting unnoticed steals. There are other factors involved as well, but these are the basics.
