To subjugate? To beat into submission?

How does that all work?

Is there a message announcing a beast has been beaten into submission, once it has? Anything to initiate this process? What are the benefits of it?

Any help will be welcome, I tried taming my first rune beetles, and it hurts

I think the only two animals you must beat into submission are the blue beetle and the fire beetle and these are the only ones you get the "you have beat the creature into subjugation" message (or whatever it is). As for other hostiles, you beat them down so they do less damage to you or are slower at going after you.

Rune beetles you have to peace to make the pain go away.

I used to tame them all the time by running up before they target and try to tame. If you miss run, invis, and repeat. But beat them down first with another pet or a series of EVs or NFs.

High resist suits are a must for this.

Rune beetles don't need to be subjugated but putting them at red line does help. What I do is throw a couple of EV's out and then get a mass dispell ready. Once the beetle is low on health pop the MD and lead tame. This just slows down the rune's movement so you can stay away from it's mele attack as that is the most dangerous. If you find yourself in trouble, low on health or poisioned run off hide/invis, heal, rinse, repeat. Just rember these critters are one of the hardest in the game to tame.

Ice Worms need to be beaten into submission as well, Although I'm probably the only one who bothers to tame em, heheh.

Earth eles are also nice for beating up rune beetles before you attempt to tame them. They can also be a bit easier to get rid of than hoping your "mass dispel" spell works to get rid of an EV before you kill the beetle. (Just click on the ele for the context menu and then release it like you would a pet.) Rune beetles do heal themselves pretty quickly so they can be very frustrating to solo tame. Bring a bard along and it'll go a lot faster and with fewer deaths.

Blade spirits are a nice choice for beating up fire beetles and the giant blue beetles. You may have just a wee bit more time to dispel them than an EV when you're trying to beat up one of the smaller beetles to tame it.
