Tips to an Oldster, coming back

So... I've been away from UO for 6 years, and I'm looking to come back and check it all out again. I played from about 1998 to about 2005 on the Great Lakes Shard, mostly as a mage. I got involved in the PVP scene, and artifact spawns, but had to go deep red defending guildmates and the like. I eventually lost interest with all the limitations of being red on my main character, and left the game, though I've paid my subscription fee for 6 years, so maybe my house in Fellucca is still around.

Any tips for someone coming back?

Can I install using my ancient 3rd Age Install Disks, or do we need something different now?

Do that many people still play?

Did they ever consolidate shards?

GL still has a respectable number of players, no they never consolidated shards, and while you probably could use your ancient disks it's more advisable for you to download the client from Ultima Online Client Downloads | Mythic Entertainment | Ultima Online, this unless you'd rather receive several gigabytes of patches that will take hours to complete.

I believe you can buy PARDONS now and become unread if that characture is still around. You can also transfer all his skills off him and on to a new player.

Anyone who ask me about returning to UO and if I have any tips, I always ask them if they quit after feb 2003. Pretty much I feel as long as someone played for some time after AoS was released, than returning to UO now shouldn't be all that much a problem. If one quit prior to feb 03, well that's a whole other story. I left UO for like 8 years less than 2 weeks after aos (Obviously, because of the release) and was totally lost when I reactivated my account last year. Truth is... I'm still lost and I don't think I'll ever fully adapt to the UO of today.

I logged in last night for the first time in 6 years. Everything in my house in Fellucca is still there, just like I left it last night. Amazing. I left it so neat and organized with massive amount of resources.

It took about an hour to get my macros all setup again so I could play my mage. He's still red with about 70 long term counts. I thought I'd try something easy to get warmed up, so I recalled to the Fire dungeon, and got immediately ganked by a red squad [CREW] in a 4 on 1 at the entrance to the dungeon. LOL, wrong dungeon to try out. Some things haven't changed in years.

After getting rez killed a couple times for laughs, finally someone allowed me to re-equip and recall back to the house. I think I need to get UO Assist setup before I go take my mage out again.

Hopped on my tamer and wandered around looking at vendors. Amazingly enough it looks like inflation is not that different than 6 years ago. Prices 6 years ago are about what I'm seeing today? So maybe I'm not so broke after all. I guess the gold sinks finally took hold enough to keep the economy in somewhat of an equilibrium.

There's mind boggling complexity though in terms of items, properties and things that have changed in the past 6 years. Imbuing? I have no idea what I don't know.

How does one use the game server chat? That's a new feature I haven't seen before. Do you type / or some other symbol to send a message, like the party feature?

Are you saying that you have been PAYING your account for 6 YEARS and haven't played in all that time?

Wow... That's dedication!

Gold comes into the game at a huge rate, I don't think the sinks are working, just the everything has flat lined. Supply and demand have just about balanced each other and it's only a few select items that really flux greatly on price.

They've done several events in the past few years that pumped arties into the game, and the newer high end arties that came with the SA expansion drop at a very reasonable rate. Faction got a Artie vending machine (though they are character bound) so that eased demand off greatly, all in all it's had a positive effect in retarding inflation.

Runic Sewing kits have dropped considerably in price as now Imbuing makes good armor more efficient to make, causing the price on alot of it to drop as well, the same holds for weapons, though Val and Verite Runic made items can with a blessing from the RNG gods roll better equipment than Imbuing can craft. All in all changes in the game are starting to get a handle on the economy, though it hasn't "deflated' holding things steady is a good start.

Sure. $10/month is tiny compared to the investment in time and resources I put in over 7 years creating the characters on the account. It's a great game, I've not been too upset to throw my money in keeping it going for people that enjoy it.
