Another idea for Forensic Evaluation:

How about special loot drops!!!

'You search the corpse and find ____'

Maybe the higher your skill; the rarer the drop, or higher frequency of non rare items.

These would be specific to only forensic evaluation so you would not have to wait two minutes for looting rights. Could give stealthing detectives something fun to do.

As far as roleplaying a Detective/Bounty Hunter/Law man, the new pirate expansion looks promising. "Tracking" down wanted pirates and cleansing the Ocean-Sea of orc pirates will be fun - and rewarding:)

But I can't decide if I will create a Captain Smollett persona or a Long John Silver one ...

Sorry to all for disappearing so quickly after creating this thread. I had some issues with internet availability and have been away since April. That has been resolved [sorta] and I have returned with new found vigor.

Sorry dude your skills became useless the moment Thieves went from being the soft white underbelly of Felucca to people picking up litter in dungeons. Tell you what I'll support a Detective Revamp, if you support a total revamp to make Stealing from Players more profitable and useful again on Production Shards.
Absolutely!

I really like some of the responses that have appeared since I've been gone. Some great pvm applications with key gathering mentioned.

Lately I have been kicking around the idea of having a wandering detective guildmaster who functions much like the wandering thief guildmaster. This would create some kind of NPC law guild that you could join if you met the requirements. Being in this guild would naturally have benefits. Maybe access to certain tools and pieces of equipement. Giving people with forensics reason to KEEP IT and not STONE IT.

Currently I am working on several solid ideas for a revamp. Once I have them worked out a little better, expect to see them posted here for critique.

Oh and I am very very pleased to see that everyone now has complete control over their titles through context menu. VERY pleased :)

To the Original Poster, well written and spot on. I have always been interested in having a detective but found skills like camping, forensics and herding need an over haul to make them more useful.

I have played them all but only for role playing purposes I would love for them to be more useful even if it was to do some new quests.

Thank you!

Unfortunately some of what I've written is not so spot on. Mainly in reguards to my dismay with tracking and detect hidden. I've labeled these two skills to be useless, and they aren't. They just lack the effectiveness I feel they could have.

I'm curious why you would associate camping and herding with being a detective?

Further curiousity... what shard do you play?

hehehe I guess I should have been more clear, I do not associate herding and camping with being a detective but they are skills like forensics that are quirky little skills that are fairly useless in todays game.

My detective did have camping though for when she was being a bounty hunter.....and my chef/tailor at present has herding as she likes fresh ingredients and to spin her own wool.

I play on Oceania.

Could you please include taste id to your list of solid ideas? I still have Taste ID on my alchy from when it had a use. Once I had to use the skill all the time to add looted/stolen potions to my kegs which went to my buccs vendors. ;)

We need some way to raise the skill. Somehow i was never able to get over 75.0 with tasting stuff. I havn't tasted anything with the GGS System.

So to make the skills more desirable to the masses they would need to give them some beef! Make forensic eval + detect traps + tracking + tinker give the tinker golem bonuses each skill gives a diffrent bouns to your pet golems and give access to new golem types, taste id + alc = new potions or some extra enhance potions, or taste id + cooking to give a better version of cooked things +50% boost or some such. Perhaps tinker + detect traps will give you access to new traps that can be placed for hunting monsters decay after x time but placeable most anywhere a Leg hold trap aka paralize a pit trap para with some dmg attatched, Rock fall trap, hail of boulder spells hit the triggerer, Oil trap ++ new use for oil flasks!!, small flire dmg + dmg over time, Greater oil burst trap same as oil trap but lots more dmg and splash dmg, Freeze trap, cold dmg trap does like a wither spell when triggered, Polymorph trap transform triggerer into random polymorph hehe just for giggles. Give the tinker with detect traps and lock picking the access to the greater versions of the traps, Must have x skill in each to place them,

I say merge the skills with the tinker I have allways wanted to run a tinker as a viable class but so far not been to successfull at it the constructs are lacking compared with the cost of the materials,

To all who think herding is a useless skill i say You have never used it or lack the immagination needed to realise how AWSOME the skill can be!. Mix it with hide stealth and WOW let the good times roll

What about changing camping so that it gives some sort of boost before doing dungeon runs like Medusa, Stygian dragon, champ spawn? Or it could give some sort of damage boost to part members if a camp has been made within the area of the spawn/peerless?

I totally agree though I would be first and foremost happy if the current uses for the skill actually worked how they are meant to they used to...

Last time I took my detective out though and was checking monsters who I know had been looted it didn't tell me who looted them... This was most obnoxious caus that's why I made him in the first place to find players I was looking for and know if I was in the right area. Perhaps its still working on peoples corpses but I rather doubt it. or perhaps its been fixed already and I just haven't tested it.

But I do remember running around the Brit woods with far less forensics back in the day and tracking my friends down long before the party system by looking at dead orcs and things and following the bodies with their names on them.

Any ways I've always wanted to be able to see who used any usable item last at the very least I'd love to be able to see a list of like the last 5 or even 10 at gm level but I don't know how much info the objects hold on them. I think it would be easy enough to make it so we could see the last user of just about ANYTHING that was usable.

I'd also love tracking to work the way it should and actually be able to track someone perhaps off of something we just used forensics on. In the case of bodies especially. This could be a really cool skill set that unfortunately has been ignored instead to add a bunch of unneeded skills.

I'm glad we have someone official watching this thread hopefuly he will pass it on =)

Thanks Sir,

This is still in fact how it works as far as using forensics on a monster corpse. Since of course, killing a monster and looting is not criminal. The only bits of information you will get is "this corpse has not be desecrated" and whether or not this creature can be made into a trophy.

Using forensics on a player corpse is still functioning as intended. You will get the murderers name, and the names of those who have disturbed the body.

One thing that I notice is still happening is a target will be in range enough to show up on the tracking gump, but just out of range to be locked onto. This has been puzzling me for awhile. I've been testing around with this issue and find that it happens at 19 steps from where the target is located. At this distance the player/creature will show up on your tracking gump but when you click them to lock on, they are too far away. I see this as something that can immediately be remedied as it is just flat out broke.

Anyone else notice this problem?
