So, this morning I finally got my key to the Abyss.
The first time the evil mage spawned, I still didn't get looting rights despite my hitting it once and there being only 5 people in the room.
After that, 2 people left, leaving me and 2 others.
The evil mage spawned again, sooner than expected, I almost missed it.
One of the others was a necromancer in lich form. He withered the mage, who proceeded to turn on him and hit him hard, endangering him. (Of course it's quite likely the lich form's health drain was a major factor as well.) By this point I was able to finally target the mage. I dropped it, and obtained a key.
The other fellow appeared to have either been afk, or was simply amused by watching the action. Either way, he didn't move.
So finally I can get in the Abyss. Yay for me! And I got a cool story to boot!
However, the evil mage still needs to be fixed, and preferably before the next Publish. He has way too few hit points and is way too easy a fight, relative to that damn artifact robe he has. (Please note: His robe doesn't even have durability, I don't think. Which means he has this awesome, "forever" robe, arguably making his robe better than Replicas that are obtainable only from much harder critters.)
Further, his being so easy to kill severely limits how many can get looting rights, which makes for a frustrating time attempting to find the Abyss key. Basically, you have to be a mage (EV casting), or a necromancer (spamming Wither), or be very lucky, or show up when hardly anyone else is there.
And he's so easy to kill that it's not any fun whatsoever.
The way to make it difficult and fun is to make the creature a lot harder and have the key spawn rarely. Even if it's only like 1 in 25 or 1 in 50 or something like that, at least we'll have a good fight with a hard critter in the meanwhile.
The current system is frustrating and is nothing else. I guarantee you I am not the only person worried, realistically, about only being able to get into the Abyss long after the loot from it has become more common.
Now, granted, upon getting I see that there's so much there, I have less to worry about than I thought, but still.......Enough people have enough to worry about that I'd argue this should be the priority, behind shard-crashing or game-stopping issues.
