Over the many years that i have played UO i have found a disturbing trend....

UO is very quiet in regards to people speaking. I know it is people AFK,On voice chats ect.
So i wonder what other peoples opinons & thoughts in regards to this where?
Good,Bad, Should Voice chats be introduced to UO, All voice chats should be banned ect ect...

Discuss....

I like voice chats i thin they are a great thing to use, it allows you to do other things while chatting.

however, certain times call for different approaches, quite often i will talk but i have alot of macros locked into kyes. My mage's spells are almost all single keys so it can get annoying to try and keep track of the convo...even with the journal!

I definitely think that things like voice chat have diminished the 'immersive' nature of many online games. I don't think banning them, however, would work out too well. As with most things in these types of games, banning something means that most people in game won't be able to use them while certain people will find ways around the bans and gain an advantage.

I am not sure there is an easy fix for this other than having players develop better habits in regards to 'speaking' in game.

I prefer in-game text chat over voice chat because it is more immersive.

UOKR's chat system is much better for this because you can scroll back through the stuff people said.

Voice chat is a lot easier to use in combination with macro keys though.

Hello darkness my old friend...
I've come to talk with you again...

Oh, erm, right your post.

Being an introvert, I find it much easier to express myself through typed text. It's just the way my brain is wired. Other people prefer voice chat. There is something else to consider, however. I find my guildmates and I do a lot of our chatting on guild or alliance chat, so this is another reason for the lack of conversation. I wouldn't go back to not having guild chat. It has been a major boon in bringing us together in-game to do things.

*does want*

I've seen it done very well in a few games, very horribly in others (which is surprising in the case of a certain successful one).

I've been in the RP community on GL for a very long time... I can say many things about voice chat....

It's ok and all when we are on a hunt or fighting... very quick very nice to have...

However... at guild meetings, High Council meetings and such... I wish we put in a rule to turn it off...

I think as far as Banning the use of it all together that will never fly... there are several whom I won't name... that I wish NEVER typed in-game... Not only can they not spell..... but they are constantly L33T speaking or LOL ing.... Which I loathe...

I do wish there were more character movements in-game that we could use rather than using ": " to Emote... *waves*.... just isn't the same as seeing your character wave... I do miss some of those features from 3d....

And I always wanted to be able to sit down or actually lay down on a bed... I 'm sorry but when my character is "wounded" they look pretty silly standing there beside the bed... and yes I know I could go to the trouble of "creating" one of the beds that I have seen on the designer forum... however.... that takes A BUNCH of lockdowns and if you don't do it just right.... well it looks bad... And I also don't want the bed looking all "modern" so its rather sad.... I'd like to be able to use that bedroll!....

Anyway YES voice chat can detract from in-game conversation... but it's far too useful to "ban" all together.... and when I'm busy doing something I don't always notice those "guild chat" messages... Also not all the members of the RP community are in our alliance... so kinda hard to speak to them otherwise... (And don't tell me about KR cause I can't play my character in KR..... WAY too ugly it's disgusting...)

But I do understand where your coming from.

I definitely think that voice chat pretty much kills any rp immersion. But, UO doesn't really cater to the rp crowd anyway so I can see how they would be for it. And ya, I think banning it would be the wrong approach.

I don't like it for two reasons:

1) noise noise noise noise. I really don't want people shouting things in my ear when they are excited, even people I know fairly well. Do NONE of you wander through a city sometimes? Or the local Walmart/Kmart/Target? We have ENOUGH noise in our lives without adding more to a game that has enough noise.

2) no transcripting available. For major events and reporting, I have used my logs and transcripts to get the gist of what people were saying. I also go back in the journal now and then in game to see what was just said. During the Casca fiasco I had to swing through it several times to find what he said, with all the idiots spamming "selling crystals for 20M".

Draconi -- one thing I'd love for you all to implement is a filtering system for journals and chat. I'd like to be able to pick out a few people that I want to "track" (by picking them on the screen) and then have a second journal filter window that shows ONLY their conversations. This would make most events much easier to follow, since I could pick the proponents of the event to listen to rather than the three dozen doofs that won't shut up.

Puhpuhpuhpuhpuh-leeeeeeze?

Voice chats are nice, but thier becoming a mmo standard would really kill alot of oppurtunities for rp. I mean, you couldnt gender bend, you would sound funny you had a low voice and you were playing a cowardly bard or something...

Of course on the other hand it could help bring more personality to characters who's voices matched thier persona.

I'm torn.
