The MACH-IV Test, and our new guild name...

I was trying to figure out a good name for the mass guild. I came across the term Machiavellian (means "scheming"), and i started to try and think up a name with this in it. I looked further into it, and found out where the word comes from.

It is a term referring to Machiavellianism, which was developed by an Italian philosopher named Machiavelli. He developed a test called the MACH-IV. People who score high on this test are considered High Machs. Here is an encyclopedia definition:

Machiavellianism - High Machs

High Machs tend to take a more detached, calculating approach in their interaction with other people. They tend to believe most people are concerned only with their own well-being and to depend too much on anyone else is foolish. They believe the best way to get by is to use deception, rewards, promises, flattery, and even punishments to manipulate others into doing their bidding. To them, power may be more important than love.

IMO, to be a thief in this game today you need to be a High Mach, lol. That is why i've decided to name the guild either The High Machs [MACH], or The High Mach Society [MACH]. Of course, if this doesn't sit well with everyone, then we can name it something else.

I took the test and scored a 98 (out of 100). And yes, it is very easy to just strongly agree, and strongly disagree, with all of the correct answers. To tell you the truth, i answered honestly, lol. The only one i was impartial on was the question about terminally ill people. This isn't one of those "How dumb are you?" tests. There is only one MACH-IV test, and here is the link to it:

I feel that this name should appeal to everyone out there, considering our profession. Let me know if i'm wrong.

I like that idea, it does mostly describe how thieves in-game work.
As far as which on specifically, I like the "High Mach Society".
I scored an 80 on the test :blushing:

Hmm...I like Machiavelli, but I'm not sure he's the best mascot for a thief guild. As he notes in The Prince,

The prince should nonetheless make himself feared in such a mode that if he does not acquire love, he escapes hatred, because being feared and not being hated can go together very well. This he will always do if he abstains from the property of his citizens and his subjects, and from their women . . . . But above all, he must abstain from the property of others, because men forget the death of a father more quickly than the loss of a patrimony.

Another favorite Machiavelli quote:

From this a dispute arises whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the reverse. The response is that one would want to be both the one and the other; but because it is difficult to put them together, it is much safer to be feared than loved, if one has to lack one of the two.

LOL so thats it. The amount of guilt you feel! I can live with that, but I'm still stealing that hanging leather tunic!

Anything above 60 is considered High Mach...but some are higher than others, lol.

Scored 58 and I agree that it reflects quite well that I always rejected Machiavelli's opinions.

For those of you who like Machiavelli (or are just ruthless, in general), you might enjoy a book called "Power," authored by Robert Greene. It is really quite good.

But again, Machiavelli was against a) stealing property and b) being hated. Not the ideal candidate for this particular guild. :p

It wasn't so much about Machiavelli, but his test. Regardless, the name is going to be ThEv. Only problem now is finding a vent server.
