[Archery] The first character

I'm going to start playing UO. What can you suggest for my first character? (Skill selection, training area, other advices, ...)

I'm going to make an archer.

Main skills:
1. Archery
2. Tactics
3. Anatomy
4. Healing
5. Resisting Spells

Later I'm going to add:
Chivalry
Focus

At the begining I'm going to train some "support" skills:
Lumberjacking
Bowcrafting
Swordsmanship
Hiding
I believe I need those skills becouse this is my first character and I haven't any gold or other support. Also I believe those skills will help me to get str/dex. I'll get rid of them later.

Could you evaluate my plan?

Another questions:

1. Starting skills/stats
20 STR/40 DEX/10 INT
50 Resist/49 Healing/1 Lumberjacking

May be it's better to get 1 Chivalry instead of Lumberjacking (to get "blessed" book)? Or even 50 Chivalry instead of Resisting or Healing? But I think I will not be able to use Chivalry till I get a stable gold income.

2. New Player Quests
Shoud I fulfill them? Or may be it's better to train skills by ordinary way (to get more stats, for example)?

I would be glad if someone wrote me what is the best way to start a new character.

Welcome and good luck! My advice would be to start as:

49 archery
49 chivalry
22 Bowcraft/Fletching (or whatever amount of skills is available)

In New Haven, do the following (in order specified)
1. Find the tactics instructor. I think his name is Armstrong. Buy tactics to 40.0 by left-clicking on him, selecting Train Tactics from the context menu, and then dragging and dropping 400 gold onto him.
2. Find the anatomy instructor. He's in a building next to the healer. it's west from the warrior trainers, but I can't recall exactly where. Train anatomy to 40.0 from the anatomy trainer in the same fashion as above.
3. Find the NPC that trains lumberjacking. He's near the carpenter in the house North of the moongate but close to the road leading into New haven. Train 20.0 lumberjacking.
4. Go back to the anatomy trainer. Dbl-click him and accept the anatomy to 50 quest.
5. Go to the healing trainer. Dbl-click him and accept the healing to 50 quest.
6. Go to the tactics trainer. Dbl-click him and accept the tactics to 50 quest.
7. Go to the archery trainer. Dbl-click him and accept the archery to 50 quest.
8. Go east out of new haven and find the skeletons, zombies, and spectral spellbinders in old haven. Shoot them full of arrows until you reach 50.0 archery and tactics. Make sure to loot the gold and any relevant items from them.
9. Go back to the archery and tactics trainers, dbl click them to complete the quest.
10. From this point, if you are short of gold, find an NPC wanting to be escorted to the docks. Accept their escort quest and take them to the fishermen on the docks. You'll get 500gp for this. You can use this money to buy an axe or more arrows.
11. If you have enough money, you should consider buying a horse from the stables just east of the docks. It will save you time running around.

From this point forward you can go do some lumberjacking to get logs. You can use fletcher's tools to turn these into shafts. Next, find some birds. I assume they spawn somewhere on New Haven, but I'm not positive. Kill them and skin them for their feathers. You can turn shafts + feathers into arrows using your fletcher's tools. You can continue raising your archery and tactics to approximately 60 on the creatures of Old Haven. Afterwards, you'll probably want to start shooting lizardmen in Despise. There is probably some good "how to" training guide for archery gain at http://vboards.stratics.com/uo-warrior/213191-warrior-faq-guides-digitally-remastered.html

Please note this was written with the expectation that you wanted to be self-sufficient starting out. You could likely ask in New Haven (or general chat) for some assistance and find someone that will give you a pretty good set of leather armor, some arrows, gold, etc. to start with.

In terms of stats, you need at least 30 str to equip a bow. Stats will raise quickly with all the skills you are training skills.

As for the Chivalry book, all basic spellbooks (magery, chivalry, spellweaving, bushido, ninja, necro, myst) are blessed.

Thank you!

Yes, I want to be self-sufficient.

I've got some more questions:

1. Am I able to fight those monsters without healing?

2. Do starting 25 arrows is enough to fullfill archery/tactics quests?
I was going to begin Lumberjacking, Bowcrafting and Bird-Hunting (using Axe) firstly to make arrows before training Archery.

3. Am I OK without Resisting Spells?

4. Should I fullfill Chivalry and Resisting Spells quests?

5. Due to the skill list bower starting items are "14 Boards, 5 Feathers, 5 Shafts" (no any fletcher's tools). May be it's an outdated info?

p.s. I can't create account till 11th due to migration so I'm sitting and reading uo.stratics.com :)

1. Yes - you're ranged and can keep distance between all the haven monsters and yourself. The spellbinders don't cast direct damage spells.
2. Maybe. If you are in old haven and on the specific quests you'll get accelerated skill gains. This means instead of gaining .1 at a time, you'll gain .2 to .5 until 50. Pick up any arrows on the ground or off corpses. It may make sense to go shoot a couple birds first.
3. For now you don't need resist. It's an easy skill to raise so don't stress on it for now.
4. I would say yes, simply because you get the accelerated skill gain while on the quest.

I created a char:
Elf
45 STR/35 DEX/10 INT (need 45 STR for elven bow)
49 Archery, 49 Chivalry, 21 Healing, 1 Bowcrafting

I spent initial 1000 gp to buy 40 Tactics, 19 Healing, 40 Anatomy.

Then I got quests for all my skills (Archery, Tactics, Healing, Anatomy, Chivalry, Resisting Spells, Focus). It took me 3.5 hours to complete them all. (I spent good amount of time for seaching instructors, creating few macroes, discovering how/where get tithings and etc).
There was enough money for arrows (12gp each), so I didn't used bocrafting/lumberjacking.

I went through moongate to Yew (Felucia) right before the server was going down.

Oh my, you did all that and then the time warp hit us all? Now everything is gone? Poor you. But that's bringing back memories of the past...

Let the people hook you up with a few arrows if need be. Don't let the time warp stop you.

Yes. When the server was up and I logged I had not my char. So I created him the second time. But this time it took me less than 2 hours to get 7 skills to 50+ and leave New Haven.

How to start paladin-archer.

1. Create a char:
Elf
45 STR/35 DEX/10 INT (Human need 30 STR only)
49 Chivalry/49 Archery/21 Healing/1 Bowcrafting

2. Lock INT.

3. Find Instructor of Tactics (in the yard to the south of the bank) and train Tactics/Healing/Anatomy up to 40 (990 gp total).

4. Get 7 quests:
Tactis/Archery (in the yard)
Chivalry (enter a building in the same yard, the second floor)
Focus (near the bank)
Anatomy/Healing (to the east/north from the bank)
Resisting Spells (on the east edge of New Haven)

5. The first trip to Old Haven (to the south from the New Haven):
Make one escort
Buy 14 feathers (you have 14? boards) and make arrows
Buy arrows to all your money (bowers are in the yard)
Go and fight Zombies till you run out of arrows. (Don't attack spell caster becouse you need all your STR to equip your bow).
Right now you should have enough STR. Attack as many casters as you can and run around. You will get up to 50 Resisting Spells very fast.
Go back to the town.

6. The second trip
Make one escort.
Get your reward for archery and resisting spells quests.
Buy a horse (to the west/south from the bank).
Buy arrows to all your money.
Go and fight casters. Don't run from them so you have an opportunity to use healing. If you don't see casters fight zombies.
You shoud get focus/tactics/anatomy to 50.
Go back.

7. The third trip
Make one escort
Get your reward for quests.
Buy 100 bandages from the healer.
Donate 1000 gp to ankh (forgot spelling). You find it in the same building where you have got Chivalry quest.
Buy arrows to all your money.
Go and figth skeletons. Use some another fighting skill (swordsmanship) to take more damage. Use Divine Fury to train Chivalry. Use archery when your very low on HP (and need to kill attackers).
You should get healing/chivalry to 50.

This take you less than 2 hours.

p.s. Thanks to Gorbs for very good advices

Haven't seen player's vendors.
Where I can buy a good bow?
Where I can buy a runes set?

Right now I hunt elems/reapers/gargs with a quest bow. My damage is 25 only :(.

Go and find a public moongate and step into the moongate. A menu appears, choose "Trammel", then "New Magincia". Go South / South West. There you will find two very nice shops close to each other:

1. The Menzoberranzan - shop. It sells filled runebooks, e.g. full dungeon runebooks. It also sells armor suits and weaponry, but I don't think you will be able to afford that.
2. The S-Mart. It even has its own website: Knuckleheads.dk • Shop - there you can find scrolls, empty runebooks, potions and many more things.

There are a lot of nice people on Drachenfels who will help you getting started.

Shops are good although there are not wide range of weapon/armor.

Can I insure a runebook? I thought I'll keep it in the bank and will have just one rune (to the bank) in my backpack, but there are no single runes for sale.

I have few items that may be good but they are useless for me. How can I trade them to items I need?

Oh, the trades, the trades. Hardest thing to learn maybe :fight:. You can try selling your useless items to a Non-player character (NPC) ; A blacksmith NPC might buy weapons and armor from you while a jeweler might buy your gems. If you want to trade with other players it might be difficult to find someone to buy things you deem useless - as they are probably worthless for anyone. Do not despair: Even young players can sell things that other players desire. Those items that you might or might soon be able to acquire include:

As for your useless items, you might want to consider saving them up for later unravelment via the imbuing skill or smelting them with your blacksmith.

Yes, you are probably right. With the advent of certain game changes, including the beloved and also dreaded imbuing, it has become increasingly difficult to keep an overview over what is good and bad by making it easier to achieve what you really want or need. To add, players have to pay fees (in gold) for their player vendors, that means player shopkeepers will often try to optimize their vendor stock - which leads to you not finding weaponry and armor within your reach. Weapons armor suits that cost 500k or even several millions might be out of your reach, being a new player.

I see four options for you:

  1. Take what you can get your hands on from player vendors and monster loot.
  2. Train up crafting characters with blacksmithing, tailoring, imbuing, carpentry and maybe even more skills.
  3. Try to find other players and try buying cheap but good starter armor and starter weaponry.
  4. If you are a roleplayer you could even try roleplaying a beggar - and beg for weapons and armor from other players. Not all players will be likely to help and you might not want to start begging. Some players do beg, some have success, some don't. Your decision.

I am sure there are journals and essays out in the world where you can read up more details and ideas.

If, and only if, you get your hands on items that might be worth something to other players there are basically three or four or five options for trading with other players:

  1. You can set up your own shop or have a vendor in another player's house. Almost all items can be sold through vendors. Vendors charge a daily fee which is surprisingly high and increases our inflation.
  2. If you have bought the Rustic or the Gothic Theme Pack you can set up a stall in New Magincia. Costs gold, too. Rental is per week. Lots of free stalls in Drachenfels' New Magincia.
  3. You can talk to other players and try to persuade them to buy your goods. Trading is initiated by dragging an item onto another player. A trade window will appear. Do not advertise your goods by spamming through General Chat. I repeat, do not spam!
  4. The Knuckleheads.dk • Auction (Drachenfels shard).
[*]Trading events that are player run - like the Nujel'm or Trinsic markets that have taken place recently.

Right now I don't plan to create a crafter. I'm going to train GM (Legendary) Archer and then try to train Tamer/Bard (or may be Tamer/Mage).

Right now I have:
~78 Archery/Tactics
~85 Anatomy
~70 Healing
80 Focus (locded)
~60 Resisting Spells
~53 Chivalry (going to lock at 60) and 5000 karma
40 Bowcrafting (locked - later I'll use this points to get Archery/Tactics to 120)

Also I temporaly have ~27 Mage (I'm able to mark a rune using a scroll) and ~60 Lumberhacking.

120 STR (marked down)
90 DEX (going to get to 125)
15 INT (35 mana with withdom)
(What is the best stats for a paladin-archer?)

The most "gold-efficient" monsters are Garpies and Eagles (I'm selling arrows to NPC vendors). But now I've already got 400k gold so I stopped farming them.

I'd like to hunt Water Elems in Destard but there are a lot of Dragons. I can't kill a Drake but not a Dragon.

Yesterday I spent a few hours killing Ophidians. It's not profitable but getting a lot of Archery/Tactics and Karma for Avengers, Justicars, Knight-Errants and Zealots.

p.s. Although I've got 400k my equipment is bad. I found a ring with bonus to Chivalry/Tactics/Damage. I bought a quiver (30k) and repeeting crossbow with self repair (75k) (it's blessed... may be it's artifact). Also I bought/found few armor parts with 40-60 resists but without other good modifiers.

I believe I need a bow/crossbow with SL/ML/DI/SSI but have never seen such bows and don't know how much it could cost.

Do you have the Stygian Abyss expansion? If so, there is an entrance to the abyss on Fire Island. A few screens north of the entrance is a secret passage that leads to the east. This leads you to a room with bloodworms, but if you go past them into the hallway with the broken bridge there is a water elemental that spawns one at at time, but nearly instantaneously after each kill. The only problem with this room is due to the layout of the terrain it is difficult to put distance between yourself and the elemental.

With 400k gold you did pretty well and it should be sufficient to persuade some player to craft you some good armor (e.g. all 70+ resists, some stamina increase and more). Not high-end, but very decent. You can't find that armour? That just means you have to find a crafter and ask him to craft you some armor.

Let me repeat: In my eyes you are doing pretty well with what you have achieved so far.

How much it will cost? It depends on how high DI and SSI should be.

I am really no expert on bows, but probably you might want to consider this bow:
Sunken Treasure: Runed Driftwood Bow - Item Catalogue - UO Stratics
It's an artifact that is quite common. I think anyone can use it, no special addon like High Seas needed. They come fairly cheap, I've seen them for sale for as low as 15k - and often times below 50k.

Lots of Damage and Swing Speed Increase - no leeching, though. I am no expert but I think it's ok and it's easily available (I have seen them in various player driven shops).

Example:
A bow (or composite bow, whatever) crafted by a player and enhanced with imbuing like you mention can possibly cost this much:

  • Wood: Negligible
  • Damage Increase: Comes automatically with 40% Damage Increase from a GM bowyer with GM in arms lore, i.e. no extra cost. 50% can be expensive to imbue.
  • Stamina Leech and Mana Leech: Negligible if you don't need maximum leech effects.
  • Swing Speed Increase: 30% Swing Speed from imbuing means 5 Relic Fragments and 10 Essences Of Control --> should be around 700k gold
  • Swing Speed Increase 25%: 4 Relic Fragments and no Essences Of Control --> 160k gold

Yesterday I bought a slayer bow (450k) to kill Dragons and went to Destard. I killed one Dragon fast but was attacked by two Grater Dragons. They hit very hard so I ran away. So right now I'm without money :).
Even more... while i earned my ~650k (that I spent) I damped NPC vendor prices for arrows in all cities. They don't want to give me good price for my arrows now so I can't be able to earn money farming garpies as fast as before.

Some shop owners will allow you to put up a vendor in their shops, some do that free of charge (even in Luna, because it's Drachenfels). If you have bought the Rustic or Gothic Theme Pack you can open up a vendor stall in New Magincia, commodity type. Lots of free stalls on Drachenfels.

I know that it is possible that these are all not viable ways for you, just wanted to mention some options you have.

This is a "special Destard bow" - Elemental slayer + Reptile slayer :). Also it has not any good modifyers (SSI, Hit Spell, Velocity, ML, SL) so it was cheap - just 450k (it has 50 DI and 255 durability).

Right now I have myself found only "narrow" slayers (like "water elemental" and etc).
