The Empty Hand

Rojhan woke late in the morning and gave a small groan as he stretched away the night’s tensions. Before leaving the bed he rolled toward the other side and reached an arm out to his companion, only to find the bed empty. Annie, or was it Amy, must have grown tired of waiting for the end of his slumber and decided to go about her day

With a wordless shrug he rose and began to prepare for his return to Yew. On the girl's bedside table sat a bowl filled with fresh water along with several clean rags he assumed were left for him. Reaching both hands into the bowl, he dipped up some water and splashed his face with it. The cold water did wonders to refresh him and help wash away the bleary state of mind he had after such a long night.

Before reaching for one of the rags he noticed a drop of blood falling into the wash bowl, then a second and third. It wasn't until the drops became a slow trickle that he noticed it's source- from his chest he saw the blood soaked tip of a short spear protruding from his chest. It was also at that time that he heard the voice behind him, “You escaped me last time, boy.” the unseen attacker said, his voice tinged with a dark madness, “But now, I have you.”

With a grunt, the speaker pulled the spear from Rojhan’s back and watched as his victim fell to the floor. Blood pooled beneath his body as the young man lay, dying, at the spear wielder’s feet. Darkness had already enveloped the young man when a second voice spoke. “That will be enough, child.” a woman’s voice said coldly, “The old man will be furious if we lose this one.”

A sharp nod was the only response as the attacker returned the spear to the scabbard strapped across his back and bent down toward the body. With little effort, he scooped up the young man and walked silently out of the room.
