@ the Devs: 3rd Party Detection and Linux?

Will the 3rd party Detection have any problems with people who use linux? I use the latest version of Linux Mint and am wondering if like my Wine app or wine tricks, or any other Linux based apps will have any effect on the detection process as in false positives? I would hate for me and many like me to get a false positive due to the fact we us a better OS than Windows.

Can the Devs please verify that they tested with various versions of linux and assure us that we(linux users) are safe, I would prefer not to use Windows unless I absolutely have to. I am set for dual boot so if there is an issue with linux then please let us know so in worst case I can just boot up windows just to play UO so I dont risk my 13, and 11 year accounts. I hope this post makes sense, Thank you all for your time.

Instead of duel boot why not use virtualbox? I do this with some of my wifes games its perfect.

Well I use wine and wine tricks for window based apps, but its not windows in the end, and if the detection software only recognizes win apps and processes than that could be a conflict with the detection code. I hope I am being overly paranoid but lol never know I have seen many a devs botch great ideas in the past by overlooking details. I Am set to Dual boot due to the fact that Linux mint comes with a Bootloader and allows you to install onto and partition a drive that has windows already installed, I have to use windows for a couple of my Cad, and Design programs that will only work in windows that I have to use with my business so I'm not completely free of Win yet lol.

I'd be interested to hear if the devs are remembering those of us using wine, as I'm sure there are quite a few linux users playing UO these days.

The detection might work ok if the detection only triggers on specific programs it's set to look for, rather than blocking anything it doesn't know. But I haven't run any games with this sort of protection under Linux, so I can't say with any confidence what will happen

Thing is though, the installers for CC and EC now require a workaround to work on Wine, as opposed to the old installers that worked just fine...To me, that says linux might not be on the testing list lol.

Kaleb, I'd suggest you hop into winehq and try and see if you can flag up the problems you're having with your design programs and check there aren't any workarounds that get them running. Usually wine gets most things running but you sometimes need a bit of fiddling. Some of the native linux software might also suit you, at least cutting down on how much you use windows... This list might give you some new stuff to try.

I use wine on my linux box as well and was curious if I would be banned. Personally, they should just fork out the dough for a compiler and deploy/test for multiple systems like linux and Apple as well. Our budget for UO must be the smallest budget at EA.

I cant its a hardware thing, not software. The bios of the device are not compatible. Its no big deal on that machine, My gaming/interweb Cpu(this one) runs the linux full time. But the other is dual booted and I only transmit user names and passwords to like uo, wow, internet on linux based OS's for security reasons so sometimes I like to log in with my work cpu on my 2nd account but I will load linux first thats why its dual booted. I dont want a false positive simply due to the fact that I use Linux and refuse windows security.

Linux/wine is a bit of a problem as it can mask processes to other windows programs and as such will hide cheat programs.

Not to mention it will throw off other detection methods too.

So its a dual edged sword, its great that it works under windows, but it also makes cheating easier.

The best thing would simply be to go after the more hardcore cheats and server detectable cheats like some speedhacks.

Actual post: Try using VMware with a windows image. It loads the image as an actual OS instance that can interact with system hardware in a virtual environment (slightly different than wine/virtual box). There may be a trial version of it, but VMware desktop I believe requires a license key.
