The Council of Magi

Who we are: The Council of Magi is a gathering of the greatest practitioners of the art. We are master wizards, mystics, seers, conjurers, spell weavers, alchemists, necromancers, and shadow mages. We seek other like minded individuals of sufficient mastery to join our furtive order.

Knowledge is our purpose: Sosaria is a storehouse of secret lore, waiting to be retrieved, catalogued, and developed for the good of the Council. Our mages travel to obscure corners of every facet to add what lies there to the sum of our occult knowledge.

Knowledge is power: Cliche and pithy perhaps, but nonetheless true. Without arcane knowledge, a mage is nothing. With it, she knows the secrets of the universe and how to affect change, and to change something one must first understand it. Every fragment of arcane lore is a tool that mages can use to bind Above and Below, or to unlock the mysteries of our world.

Knowledge has a price: Arcane lore is dangerous and is only acquired at great cost. Accordingly, the Council does not share its secrets lightly. There are some books and some dark, secret names that few should ever know, because they summon up That which cannot easily be put down again, and attract the attention of Things that are best left ignorant of us.

No vampires, liches, or undead. Those supernatural powers have enough advantages in this world without handing them the power and secrets held by this Council. We are archmages. We are of the wise, and we wield the Sight; there is no veil we cannot pierce or masquerade that we cannot discern.

The Council will always have enemies, as any who practice magic inevitably will. Together we decide best how to defend ourselves and protect our interests.

Open Caucus: Occasionally we will will hold a caucus open to all interested in holding a seat, for open discussion, debate, research, and expeditions.

Honesty: As a council we will deal truthfully or not at all, to the best of our ability. This belief does not bind us from circumlocution, nor does blind adherence force us to divulge all of our deepest secrets when asked. But it is better to say 'no' than to lie, as the latter would damage our credibility.

Contact: Contact Minalan, Speaker of the Council, or Merek, the Council Warden.

At our second convocation, we have ratified the simple rules that bind us.

* We do not interfere in the affairs of other Council members. We don't ask our people to police one another, or submit to others looking over their shoulders. We do not dictate the behavior of our people outside of the council halls.

* We do not share our knowledge or secrets with outsiders without Council approval, nor do we use this knowledge in any massively destructive capacity. Put simple, we don't want the world to decide that it's far better off without us.

* We do not tolerate the weak-minded. This includes mages that fall under outside influence, such as demonic possession, vampire blood slavery, geas, or mind control. We hold dangerous artifacts and delve into forbidden mysteries that simply cannot be compromised.

Policy: There has been some confusion, as this is not what everyone expects a Council of Mages to be. But I believe that it works; wizards are a powerful, intelligent, and independent lot. Coming to a consensus is and should always be like herding stubborn cats. Future speakers may elect to pursue vastly different policies, but currently I prefer that we remain as apolitical as possible. If the Council of Mages were to rush to the King's aid, choose a side in every argument, right every wrong, or enforce the law, we might as well just sign up for the RBG. We study magic, that is our purpose; it is what makes us unique. The other royal guard units do not, and there are plenty of them.
