The Coming Dawn

Aedon Durreah

Village of Aegis
Stratics Veteran
Stratics Legend
The glow from the lantern illuminated the small corner if the tavern in which he was working. It was the hours before dawn, and as the Glade of Aegis lay quietly in slumber, Aedon decided to start the task of reordering the chests behind the bar in the Knights Rest. For some days now he had found it impossible to locate an item within the chests, and making sense of the inventory set up Gillian had used was trying under the most calm of circumstances. As he opened chest after chest, surveying the items within he said aloud;

“I am sure this made some sense to her; she never seemed to have trouble location just what was asked for. But for the life of me I cannot find anything without opening each container.”

This remark, made to no one gave him cause to laugh a bit. Over the years he had owned the Rest he had the occasion to have several different managers. From Kaneye to Rianna-Aphrodite to Gillian he had always encouraged them to set things up in a way that made their job easier. But he had to admit that this was the longest it had taken him to reorder things to suit himself. Perhaps I am just getting too old for this task he thought as he opened yet another chest.

The night was quiet, and through the windows passed only the sounds of wolves baying in the woods surrounding Aegis. It was in hours like this that Aedon found it easiest to think back, and reflect on recent matters.

First and foremost in his mind was the entire affair involving the Hand. He had at first been livid with Gillian for signing such a warrant, First off, because he did not recognize her authority to have him taken from Aegis and second because he had always thought that when push came to shove, she would come down on the side she knew to be the right side. But following the arrest all he could think of was that she had in her desire to have the power needed to feel safe, handed over the people of Yew to wolves.

But there was something that had intrigued him on the day Mikael released him.

He had known the leader of the Hand for a good many years, and had been witness to the brutality through which he garnered the respect he wanted. If not respect, he had always been willing to settle for fear. After all, a people who fear you tend to be obedient. But as he spoke, Mikael seemed to be a different man. Oh he had never been one to shout out what he wanted, but he had always had an aura of menace about him that seemed to be missing as he sat quietly in the chair talking to Aedon. His conditions had been simple really, and they were delivered not though the point of a blade, or a foot on the neck but with a quiet sense of purpose. He even acknowledged Aedon’s full ownership of the Glade of Aegis. Would this translate into some form of respects for his right to welcome who he wanted into the Rest? Well, only time would tell that. But Aedon could not help but mark the change that seemed to have come over the man.

It is said that all too often we esteem too highly that which we do not have. But could it be possible that having the acknowledged guardianship over Yew that Mik had been fighting for though the years was having a profound effect on him? Was Mikael actually becoming the Protector of Yew? It was clear that Yew needed such a person to step forward.

Finishing his task, Aedon wiped of the bar, put the display bottles back in place and headed out into the late watches of the night. The winds had turned around coming now out of the north. And the crisp dews of autumn lay on the grass and plants which surround the pond. And though there was a chill in the air, he knew full well that in the full light of day the chill could give way a sun which sought to for a bit longer warm root and twig. Looking towards the east, Aedon watched as the first rays of dawn reached their fingers into the darkness of the night sky.

“It is going to be a good day.” He said, and only the trees marked his words.
