The best laid plans of mice and Hands

Having little luck finding the rangers near the Knight's Rest, the man known to his guild as the Hand of Guile decided to move on toward an outpost where the goodie two shoes types met to discuss puppies and kittens while the real leaders took over towns. Slipping off quietly he pulled a tattered scroll from his pack and called upon its powers to take him instantly to a spot nearby.

When he arrived, he knew that he had finally found his prey. Tracks around the outposts showed fresh arrivals and he could barely make out voices coming from inside as he listened just outside the door. But he could not understand their words from so far away. Cursing silently, he moved off to a secluded area and waited for his opportunity.

A man arriving moments later told him that that opportunity had arrived. Rushing as quickly as he could without revealing his presence, he followed the man inside and took up a position at the rear of the room and watched.

Inside, there seemed to be some discussion about who, if anyone, would handle the town of Yew's current 'Hand' problem. He made a mental note when they mentioned an upcoming meeting and remained hidden as the discussion moved toward more esoteric subjects.

One of those present had apparently shown some interest in learning the magical arts. From that interest the talk focused mostly on the benefits and dangers of such study. Feeling that his time here had reached its most productive, the hidden watcher decided to leave and find more, pleasurable, distractions.

But his arrogance would not allow him to slip away as discretely as he had arrived. Instead, he reached his hand into the pack at his side and pulled out another, even more tattered, scroll and spoke aloud, "My opinion is, magic is dangerous." As the others in the room stood in stunned silence, the man ripped open the scroll and started to call for its magics. But, to his shock and surprise, the scroll fell apart in his hands and he was left staring at a room full of enemies. "Damn" he thought as they moved quickly towards him.

Moments later, he awoke from a daze and found himself in the woods nearby. Shaking his head with a laugh, he made his way to the nearest magery shop to restock on his life saving scrolls so that next he might be more prepared.
