The Beginning

The birth of a child is usually celebrated surrounded by all those who loved it before it took its first breath.

All that waited this particular child was the cold concrete floor as it slipped from its mother's body. The mother looked down at the source of her discomfort and then turned away as she continued eating the stale bread in her dirty hands. The girl child wailed as the shock of the bitter cold embraced it. The desperate cries did nothing to elicit even a look from the new mom. Even the mother's breasts engorged with colostrum did not betray any maternal drive. She had been through this too many times before. Her body was riddled with stretch marks from her dozen other pregnancies. Pretty soon They would come and remove the squawking baby from her cell and she would be rewarded with sweets.

The mother waddled over to the water bucket still connected to the crying child via the umbilical cord. The child spin slowly on the floor as the biological rope pulled taut. The movement extorted fresh protests from the baby as its tiny body slide across the frigid floor. As if her body relented to the child's objections, the placenta was expelled with a wet slurping sound.

Footsteps came from down the hallway and to the cell as two pairs of eyes peered past the bars. The mother turned, half crawling-half hopping, and moved to the bars making low guttural noises. One of her filthy feet narrowly missed the newborn in her eagerness to get to the cell door. Both of the figures wore surgical masks that covered their nose and mouths.

"What do you have for us?" as one craned its neck to see over the excited mother.

"Come along, move outta the way..." the other said as it pulled a handful of sweet candies out of its pocket. It ran the hard candy along the bars as if to get the mother's attention and walked to the far side of the cell. The mother followed, occasionally reaching up to try and snatch at the taunted treat. "Ah ah ah..." the voice scolded, "Come along."

As the mother was distracted, the other watcher opened the cell door and scooped up the newborn in their arms. The bloody child wailed louder for a moment and then quieted as it was held against the white coat. The watcher pulled a hemostat out of a pocket, clamping the cord and using it as a handle to lift the discarded placenta from the floor. He quickly made his way out of the cell, pulling the door shut as the lock clicked into place. As if on que, the handful of sweets were thrown to the back of the cell where the clattered loudly against the wall. The mother scrambled after them, grabbing them as quickly as she could.

"What is it?" the sweet giver asked.

"A girl. Healthy with no obvious deformations." he responded.

"The Doctor will be pleased. " she said as she quickly wrote a few figures on a clipboard hanging just outside the cell on a rusty nail.

They both made their way back down the corridor away from the loud crunching on the mother as she feasted on her reward.

It would be the last interaction the girl would have with her mother.
