The Altars want what?

There are a few places in the dungeon where there is an altar (maddening horrors to name one). Upon d-clicking one of the braziers, it asks you to target what you'd like to sacrifice. The item must be in your backpack, so, has anyone found out what you 'sacrifice' to them? Some suggested keys, but the horrors haven't dropped anything yet that they've accepted.

Any ideas?

I think maddening horrors are near the key area for Medusa.

You need 4 rare eggs to get into Medusa, and the only other place that I know of with an altar where you have to sacrifice something, is to get into the Stygian Dragon, you need 4 Draconic orbs.
