The 18th Bridge

Dear Vesperians, it’s true that we live in a world where the worst always happens on a daily basis, leaving some of us scratching our heads and wondering what in Sosaria just happened? We recognise this, and we see it as our duty to find out exactly what is going on and relay it back to you, our readers.

The 18th Bridge shall be our instrument in spreading the word throughout the City, giving you the news you crave to know, shining a bright beam of light on what would otherwise be in darkness. This newspaper will be published free for all, once a fortnight, financially backed by our Lord Chancellor himself, who believes it’s important for Vesperians to know what is going on in the City they love and live in.

And so with this, I dedicate the first, and many more issues of The 18th Bridge to the people of Vesper.

---------------------------------

The Vespars

The past week kicked itself off with the first ever edition of the Vespars, an award ceremony to cherise and reflect on the achievers of Vesper who have helped tremendulously in shaping her into the glorious City that she is today. The Monday started off with a party prior to the ceremony, where the people of Vesper were able to have a good time and reflect on the past few months as they put forward their votes for numerous awards.

The Tuesday following was the actual ceremony, co-hosted between our Lord Chancellor Deacon van Cocidius and Elaine O’Connor who did a brilliant job. The big awards of the night though were the prestigious medals which weren’t voted for by the people of Vesper, but a private council of the highest authority who chose former Captain and Chancellor Escaflowne to be awarded with the “Legend of Vesper” medal. In his speech, Escaflowne broke down in tears and vowed to the people that his military days are not over, and that he will be back.

Other winners are Hanse Davion (Evil Genius & Token of Leadership), Rebecca (Sexiest Female& Veteran Entrepenuer), Van Cocidius (Sexiest Male & Comedian of the Year) and Lauranthalas (Contribution to Culture). The full list of the awards and their winners can be found in this article: http://www.uoforums.com/achievements/75411-vespars-winners-podium.html . Also a list of the medals and what it means to be awarded them can be found in this one: http://www.uoforums.com/achievements/75272-vesperian-medals-awards.html .

---------------------------------

Esca’s Hat

Vesperians have been in mouring this past week after Escaflowne had his beloved bear hat taken from him. It’s believed that a Yewish Waywatcher had jumped poor Escaflowne whilst he was outside the Swaggers Inn and took the hat from upon his head. We caught up with the Lord Chancellor and asked him some questions on the terrible situation;

The 18th Bridge: Escaflowne seems rather upset about losing his bearhat, a family heirloom. Will you be acting on it?

Lord Deacon van Cocidius: Well of course! Escaflowne’s bearhat is on our to do list. Without his bearhat, Esca is nothing but a man who can’t dress himself.

The 18th Bridge: But many people might not see any need in following this up, it is after all just a bearhat, plus he’s already found a replacement!

Lord Deacon van Cocidius: At the end of the day, if any Vesperian is mugged, be it a missing hat or a bottle of ale, it’s my duty to make sure justice is done. We shall get back his bearhat if it’s the last thing we do!

The 18th Bridge: So do you have any leads?

Lord Deacon van Cocidius: Well, we believe it to be one of the Yewish Waywatchers, which one though is another question. I’m confident we’ll track them down though, we have our best agent on the job. Elaine O’Connor.

We wish them luck in regaining the famous bearhat.

Duke’s Party

Last night readers, Vesper was invited to the Duke of Trinsic’s housewarming spring festival party sort of bash. The centerpeice of the evening was supposed to be the impressive garden that the Duke has on show in his new home, but our dear Escaflowne (who is becoming a common occurance in this issue, what a busy man he’s been..) managed to steal the show with his proposal to long-term partner, Gwen Irima. She accepted his proposal and the two have been promised to wed, although a date is yet to be set so watch this space readers.

Peace talks with Cove

Our relations with Cove have been nothing short of confusion throughout history. One minute we're allies, then we're hostile.. best buddies again, and then all of a sudden they're allied to our arch-enemy, the Yewish. But our glorious Lord Chancellor has it in his best interest that relations with our neighbours improve vastly under his reign and he's made the first steps in this cause.

Meetings were ongoing through the week between our Lord Chancellor Deacon van Cocidius and the Heir Baron of Cove, Lord Raziel von Richter and both have concluded the decision of where the border between out two nations lie, the subject that caused dispute between both of us previously. A map showing the borders is to be published shortly.

Furthermore, a treaty of peace has been signed between the two leaders, putting all feuds to an end. What does the future hold between the brothering nations, will the peace last? Will they take it one step further and put quill to parchment on an alliance? We want your thoughts.

Food Poisoning Strikes Trinsic

Last Friday's weekly night at the Trinsic Rose was interrupted after numerous customers were rushed to the local hopsital with apparent food poisoning. According to witnessess, Stewan Seagull who is the local cook wasn't the man behind this, a young lady in fact dropped off free supplies of bread to advertise her new bakery of which is based in Moonglow.

Those who were affected from the poisoning were former Captain of the Duchy, Dawn and Vesperians Escaflowne, Emre and our Lord Chancellor. All the victims are in what can be considered stable conditions although Dawn and Emre are in coma's. Escaflowne on the other hand is disillusioned to think that he is now Gendin the Good. Our Lord Chancellor dismissed himself from the watch of Iljian the Healer, arguably the greatest healer of all time. His condition is unknown and wasn't available for interview, although our Lord Chancellor was gracious enough to give us the possible statement; "I'm fine, now f**k off".

I plead to all readers to not eat anything if you're not sure of where it came from. It's probably poisoned.

---------------------------------

Drow Attacks?

Vesperian barmaid, Willow Rayne, was recently attacked and tortured by a mysterious being! According to Willow, it was a woman who attacked her and she made it apparent that she despised human males. Although it's not confirmed that the attacker was in fact Drow, it doesn't sound too far from the claim.

Willow has been sent off to the Lyceum in Moonglow after her attacked left her mentally unstable, showing signs of Blackrock poisoning. Which is no surprise after reports of blackrock have been seen dotted around Vesper. The Lord Chancellor has urged that no Vesperian's should be experimenting with Blackrock, as it is a dangerous substance that can have no good come from it.

---------------------------------

Spring Festival

Two weekends ago now, Vesper hosted the Spring Festival where friends and allies of Vesper could come and celebrate the coming of Spring by taking part in numerous games and shows.

Along with the expected gladiator tournament, kissing booth and fortune tellers, the most impressive aspect of the festival was the freak show. It housed a talking Ettin amongst other things, which did in fact manage to escape from it's enclosure and harass our Lord Chancellor. Luckily it was lured back to it's enclosure before it could cause any real damage.

After the taste of the Spring Festival, Vesperian's feel uplifted and are left wondering what's coming around the corner next?

Bigger Boobs Now A Possibility!

You heard right, bigger breasts are now possibly and available to all women. After the inventors showcase last week, local healer Albin showcased his new invention, the breast implant. A simple operation can leave your woman with boobs almost three times the size of her originals. Not to mention making them perkier and firmer.

The operation costs no more then twenty-five thousand gold, quite a steep price but a grand investment if you ask us. So don't hesitate to seek this man out and give your breasts that boost.

---------------------------------

Rumours

Is the army out of shape? Going by their last hunt, they were easily brushed aside by Dragons of Destard, and the chilling creatures of Ice! They seriously need to pull their thumb out!

A hole was discovered outside the Swaggers which lead to an underground network of tunnels! Some folk believe the Yewish have been digging under Vesper for years, and this is how they sent spies on us! Let's hope not..

The Two Nation Games

As seen in the last edition of the 18th Bridge, the Baronship of Cove and the Republic of Vesper have finally made peace with each other and have even put an end to the long term argument of their borders. New borders have been drawn up to both nations satisfaction. Here is a Covian map where the red line marks our new borders:

In order to celebrate this new peace both Cove and Vesper have created the Two Nation Games! These games began last Sunday and are planned to take place every Sunday for the next 5 weeks. Both nations are brought together to share entertainment and games from each of their cultures with Vesper hosting 2 Sundays, Cove hosting 2 Sundays and a big party at the end.

Last Sunday began with Vesper hosting Golem Wars and Vodka 'n' Stool races within the city of Vesper.

---------------------------------

New Trade Minister

The Great Devante Stirling has officially returned to Vesper! For the past few months his face has been a rare sight in Vesper due to some personal business he was whisked away on; but now he returns with a bang! Replacing Mizuho as the new Trade Minister!

And what a fitting position it is for this man! Mr Stirling has done alot for trade in Vesper over there years from running the Stirling and Kendall trading company to creating the weekly Swaggers market!
Congratulations Mr Stirling and heres wishing you good luck with your new position!

You know what blackrock and this title have in common? - They're both too long

It appears that blackrock is popping up throughout the lands and many blackrock related incidents are occuring. Investigations by the Kingdom are saying that the dark elves are behind the blackrock and they are harvesting it in large quantities from mines.

Blackrock History:
Blackrock is a highly explosive substance that emits radiation with the ability to infect all manner of creatures that come in contact with it. It is also the core ingredient in the most powerful spell known to the land, Armageddon.

The Armageddon spell was created by the wisps over 700 hundred years ago. It causes total annihilation to the landscape, scorching the earth and vaporizing almost everything in its path. Those who attempt to cast it can cause themselves to explode or suffer the blackrock infection which drives them insane with voices and sometimes coercing their will.
The spell requires all 8 mage reagents and a huge amount of blackrock to cast properly. It can only be cast by an exceptionally powerful mage or group of mages - a difficult prospect given the level of insanity required to dabble with such a dangerous spell.

In the past the Zog Cabal attempted to cast the Armageddon spell but with only a limited amount of blackrock. This created a lesser but still very potent effect of the spell; causing mass earthquakes across Britannia which opened up the entrances to the lost lands.
Aside from these blackrock properties there have also been past incidents within the Republic involving blackrock such as numerous citizens being infected like Escaflowne and Piper, the destruction of the Town Hall and the Europa Auction and Events auction house north of Vesper exploding.
This is why this very dangerous substance is HIGHLY ILLEGAL throughout the Republic.

Recently blackrock has been found outside the Military headquarters and Redguard Luke McCloud was set on fire by coming in contact with the substance and had to be put out by a water elemental.

To address the growing blackrock threat in the Republic, Marshal Balgus Bloodmore has released this statement:

"Citizens of the Republic,
blackrock is an illegal and highly unstable substance; if any is sighted then it is to be reported to the Republican Military officers immediately. DO NOT approach or touch the blackrock, it must be boarded off by military personel. ONLY experience high ranking Warlocks are authorized to handle the substance.

Due to the current situation anyone, citizens or unauthorized military, found with blackrock on their person will face maximum punishment."

I fear we have not seen the end of this blackrock threat yet.

---------------------------------

A new kind of training

The Republican Military carried out a brand new exercise the other week, Riot training. Vesper has seen many civil wars in its time and it seems the military are training to prevent any in the future.
Citizens were paid to come along and help out with the training by acting as an angry mob.

A success? Its hard to tell, i guess we'll have to see if anymore riot trainings are hosted in the future.

---------------------------------

Reunion

Earlier this week Esca Flowne was reunited with his family heirloom bearmask! After what seemed like years for him without his 'face' the bearmask is finally back in his hands. Mr Flowne had tears of joy when we spoke to him and when asked how it returned he told us the following:

"A local cleaner in Vesper came fourth to me with a bearmask saying he had found it in the bin at the bank, i thought that can't be my bearmask but on closer inspection it actually was. How disrespectful! After putting me through hell the robber just tosses it away in the bin, its an outrage!
I gave the cleaner the reward for finding it anyway and thanked him, but if you could excuse me now, i have to go take a bath with my bearmask"

Then he ran off hugging his bearmask, an odd fellow indeed. I guess one mans junk is another mans treasure ey.

---------------------------------

Rumours

Rumour has it that Devante and Rebecca are to be wed finally?! The two have been together for a long time now and even have a child. Has Devante finally popped the question? Im sure we'll find out soon enough.

Lieutenant Bedford a Llama lover? Redguard Lieutenant Damien has been spotted eating a candle lit dinner with his trusty llama Ernie both sitting at the table at his home. Well if Mr Flowne is into bears i can't see why Mr Bedford can't love his Llama.

Chancellor Deacon Van Cocidius a cross dresser? Mr Cocidius has been spotted numerous times coming out of Vesper tailors with ladies garments in hand. But thats not all! Multiple people say when walking past his house they can hear the sound of rather queer womans music playing loudly. The fact that he is married with children makes it even more worrying.

*Bumper Edition*

The Two Nation Games

The past five Sundays have played host to the "Two Nation Games", a step in the right direction in promoting peace and fortifying the friendship with our neighbours from Cove. Since our last edition, both Cove and Vesper have hosted another event each, as well as the finale party held on the border of both nations. Here's a quick recap of what happened over the past five weeks;

Week 1 (Vesper) - Golem wars, Vodka n Stool Races
Week 2 (Cove) - Insult Competition
Week 3 (Vesper) - Horse race and pairs tournament
Week 4 (Cove) - Bagball and Jousting
Week 5 - Party with Mud Wrestling, Bar, Baths, Sparring Arena and Mongbat Shooting range

Now that the games are over, what are your thoughts on the renewed friendship with the Covians? Do you think it was fun, or perhaps the whole thing was a bad idea. We want to hear your thoughts!

---------------------------------

Blackrock Threat Continues

It's been a problem on the rise as of late, the returning dangers of Blackrock as it comes to plague our lands yet once more. At first the Drow were thought to be behind it all, and this might still be the case as the scenario deepens, bringing danger right onto the doorstep of Vesper. Talk of tunnels within the Avarice mountains leading to the hideout of the "Dark Elves". It's advised that all Vesperians are to stay far away from the mountains themselves unless they absolute have to. The caves themselves are a hotspot for miners, but with the increase of blackrock it's advised you take your mining elsewhere.

---------------------------------

Drow Attacks

Finally some good news coming from the latest spawn of Drow attacks on our good people of Vesper. As we all know, Brenna, a loyal soldier in the Army of Vesper was taken from us by the sadistic Drow spawn that has plagued Sosaria for far too long. But through the long hard work and bargaining of Elaine O'Conner, and the great work from our two new Luitenants (more on that later), private Brenna Night was saved from the Drow and has been returned safely to Vesper. It's no secret that these Drow have tormented Vesperians in the past, and it's to be known that Drow are not welcome within the provinces of Vesper without a signed race pass from the Chancellor.

---------------------------------

Council Meeting

A couple of weeks ago, the council of Vesper got together for a meeting - welcoming their newest edition, the new Trade Minister, Devante Stirling. Although not a lot was discussed, apart from a possible alliance with the "Lords of Malas", which was turned down, there was a ground breaking suggestion made from the new Trade Minister. He's proposed Vesper change their currency from gold, to silver. Devante Stirling is still working on all the important details on the matter, so keep reading for any updates on this.

---------------------------------

Changes in Command

It started with the resignation of Elaine O'Connor, former Lieutenant of the Stalker division. Wishing to spend more time with her family, she's decided the time to step down was right for her, but it left the army in somewhat of a pickle. All the leading men of Vesper got their heads together to discuss a quick fix up for structure, and of course, replacements.

On the out are Lieutenant O'Conner and Bedford. Coming in we have Lieutenant McCloud and Lieutenant Drachen who shall be sharing positions of command with Hanse Davion. Althought we all know Luke McCloud, a long serving member of the Republic, on behalf of The 18th Bridge, we'd like to welcome back Lucas Drachen and wish him good luck in his new position.

Any questions or thoughts on the new structure you can find on page 69: http://www.uoforums.com/vesper-ooc-board/76611-message-all-v-members.html

---------------------------------

Chess - Clash of the Brains!

Can it please be mentioned, that the chessgame in Nujel'm between Thomas Jericho and Angelica Wish - was won by Angie of the Swaggers Inn and that the Management from the Vesper Trading Company would like to send a warm thank you to all who helped out as chess pieces.

---------------------------------

Lord Deacon van Cocidius.. Junior!

That's right, lucky wife of our beloved Chancellor popped out another one a couple of nights ago. Picking the Swaggers Inn as the place to give birth, a place ironically where move Vesperians are conceived, the place was packed to witness the birth of the new addition to the van Cocidius family. The little boy has been named after his father, Deacon van Cocidius, which makes us only wonder if he'll grow up to be exactly like his father.. I'm not sure if that'd be a good thing or not. We wish Madeline a quick recovery, and have fun with the lack of sleep for the next few years! Can't see our Chancellor helping out!

---------------------------------

Rumours

- Louisa Dart (of Yew) and Soraya Davion are rumoured to be an item!

- Michael Jackson has been sighted. Where, who and when.. we don't know.

- Escaflowne is a long time sufferer of Phimosis.

- Envoy of Vesper Anira and jack-the-lad Tigurius are an item too!

- Rebecca and Hanse having a bit on the side.. ?

- The Mighty Morphing Flower Arrangers BT (Bagball Team) are lining up a 70,000,000 dubloon raid on Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard.

Drow Threat Crushed

Last week saw a massive counter attack by the Republic of Vesper and members of the Kingdom of Britannia on the Drow/Blackrock threat within Republic lands.

The force marched into the Avarice Mountains where the Drowish Blackrock Mine was located. Upon defeating the entrance guardians they managed to uncover the password needed to head down the Drow hole.

Upon entering they were met with heavy resistance leading to one long and truly epic battle against the Drow and their pet dragons. Eventually though victory was in sight and the remainders of the drow forces were put down along with a powerful drowish wyrm that awaited the Britannians deeper in the mine.

The Republic and Kingdom forces revealed that the Drow were after a powerful liquid called serpentym that could be found in the Lost Lands and wanted to use Vesper's graveyard entrance to get to it. It is told that this liquid has the power to cure the Blackrock disease.

The next day the forces of the Republic and the Kingdom gathered once more to travel into the lost lands and prevent the Drow getting their dirty little mits on the serpentym.

Cutting down drow warriors and dragons along the way, the Britannian force had to figure out clues as to the where abouts of this liquid. The clues were on the gravestones of deceased Monks who apparently brewed the serpentym from the venom of ancient silver serpents.

The army traveled to their journeys final destination, the Terra Sanctum where they found the lair of these great serpents of old. After defeating the ancient silver serpents, samples of their venom was milked and kept for safe keeping, away from Drow hands. The remaining drow forces dispersed into the wilderness and the Blackrock mine was left empty.

The army returned to Vesper in Victory and the Drow threat had been crushed for now.....

One disturbing fact remained though for the Republic, the blackrock mine was revealed to connect Yew and Vesper but the pathway was blocked by boulders to Yew; who knows how long it will stay that way?

Thats right! The 6 monthly Chancellor Elections are coming up on Sunday 27th June in Vesper to decide the new ruler of the Republic!

Trouble in Haven

Republican Military personel were attacked by guards from Yew the other day in Haven. It is said that the Vesparians were assaulted by Yewish when a fight broke out between Cove and Yew after Covians dropped a Yewish trainee a little while before.
Whatever feud Cove and Yew have going, it seems clear now that the Republic has been dragged into it after the Yewlanders attacked.

What tops this all off is the fact that as soon as the fight broke out, the Covian military present teleported away onto the roofs of New Haven buildings, fleeing the scene and leaving the Vesparians outnumbered and alone against the militia from Yew.

Is this who we have been trying for friendship with these past months? Cowards who would run and leave us to stand our ground alone against their enemy in a fight that wasn't even ours to begin with?! Its outrageous!

---------------------------------

Rumours

Competition is healthy some claim - and Rhyddin Drax is apparently getting competition for next years "Vespar adwards". Tigurius has been seen spending alot of gold and bought alot of wine for himself and Miss Anira.

Has Anira got competition with Tigurius? Lucic is said to be after Tig's heart as well.

Is the Republic preparing for war? The army seems to be hard at work training for something.

Hanse Davion is said to have a fetish for bondage, should Rebecca be worried?

Election Results

The other Sunday once again saw the free people of the Republic vote for their new Chancellor in their beacon of democracy, the Chancellor Elections. An election that takes place every 6 months to elect a new leader of the Republic chosen by it's people.

A polling station was set up on the assembly yard plot where a crowd gathered to hear the speeches of the candidates and cast their votes.
The two candidates for the election were:

Folken Strategos - Member of the Vesper Trading Company and owner of Club Strategos, the local Vesper nightclub. His agenda was all about entertainment and bringing more fun to Vesper; but while that is all well and good he failed to deliver on the other parts of running the Republic.

Damien Bedford - Long standing and proud citizen of the Republic as well as ex marshal of the Republican Army in which he served for many years. Now a retired war veteran Mr Bedford seems to be trying his luck with politics. Damien Bedford's agenda is called the Green Party in which he has Marshal Balgus Bloodmore and Ex Chancellor Van Cocidius backing him within the party. Mr Bedford managed to cover pretty much all areas of running the Republic and answer confidently any questions thrown at him by the crowd.

The results were as follows:

Damien Bedford 74% of votes
Folken Strategos 23% of votes
Van Cocidius 3% of votes

It seems someone still loved ex Chancellor Van Cocidius even though he wasn't running again. But as you can see Mr Bedford or should i say Chancellor Bedford won the elections by a landslide and thus his reign over the Republic has begun!

Chancellor Bedford has not reinstated the old council, instead he has shortened it to three seats.
Damien Bedford - Chancellor of the Republic
Balgus Bloodmore - Marshal and head of military affairs
Van Cocidius - Culture Minister and head of civilian affairs

The Chancellor is intending to bring in a civil service service system in which the other old seats of the council can be done by anyone doing their civic duty as well as another wide number of roles. It is also rumoured that only people who are part of the military or performing civil service will be allowed to vote on voting matters and the next elections.

We'll have to wait and see what becomes of this upcoming civil service system.

---------------------------------

Aiding the Bane

A war has erupted in the lost lands between a newly arisen faction called the 'Bane Chosen' and the Ophidians that dwell there. The Kingdom of Britannia has not officially picked a side after it is said that Queen Dawn wants to stay out of it; but the Republic have dived straight onto the front lines alongside the Bane Chosen.

With the Ophidians being the Republic of Vesper's long time nemesis it is no surprise that they would fight against them. Two invasions of Vesper? What Vesparian wouldn't want to kick some serpent arse!
What made the decision even easier is the similarities between the Bane Chosen and the Republic; as the Bane Chosen, like Vesper are also followers and soldiers of Chaos.

So the Republic has taken to the war effort aiding the Bane Chosen, sending out forces of troops once a week to reinforce the Bane's ranks.

---------------------------------

Into the Hole once more

After the recent extermination of the Drow in the huge tunnel network of the Drow hole where blackrock was being mined, the Republic has decided to venture once more into the tunnels.

A dispatch of soldiers began securing the entrance to make it safe and exploring the tunnels for any straggling Drow or creatures within.
It is said that the Republic want to begin mining operations down in the tunnels to gather the ore they are much in need of.

Champion of Champions Tournament

The other week saw the Champion of Champions tournament take place, hosted by Redguard Lieutenant Luke McCloud. It turnt out to be a success with people from Vesper, Cove and other nations turning up. But in the end there could only be one winner! Which was our very own Victor Macil from Vesper!

We apologise for the lack of pictures.

---------------------------------

Rumours

Rumour has it that Yew are using physical performance enhancing drugs to better their chances in the upcoming Olympics!

Theres has been talks in the wind that a new band of thieves are forming in Vesper. Will they be a thorn in the Republics side if this is true?
