Tell me about your name, and why! -- Discussion

I have been in a discussion mood lately...and after looking at a post, I noticed that someone refered to me as "GED" (ohmyGED)....and it got me thinking....

Well, since we play such a dynamic game with a large base of players....I was curious to know:

1. If there is a story about why you have a specific username?
2. How long have you had it?
3. Anything else fun you would like to share about it!

Well, as a "username" perspective --- ohmyGED:

I'm from Boston....I have a bit of an accent....so "ohmyGED" is me actually saying: "oh my GOD!" --- the term was coined by all of my friends after they saw my progression in playing original Halo for XBOX...I never played before College...and one of my roommates was absolutely obsessed with the game(plus it made a great drinking game if you drink after you die). Of course, I was used to old school GoldenEye at the time and never played XBOX and I was completely miserable at the game; my friend was amazing, and it seemed that everytime I spawned I would immediately die by like a sniper head shot or sticky grenade. At one point, during the game I would just keep saying "oh my GED" (with the accent) because I kept dying after every 5 seconds.

So, it became a typically Thursday night ritual....and I started getting better and better at the game....when I went home for winter break, I actually asked for an XBOX and Halo II (just came out at the time) for Christmas. I started playing on XBOX Live....and I finally started getting really good (after relentless playing and training).

I returned back after break, and of course, my friends didn't know I practiced nor got the system or game.....and I started tearing it up. Soon enough, they started saying "oh my GOD" because I kept doing what they did to me originally...killing them within 5 seconds of when they spawned.

ohmyGED was born.

I was one of the better 1vs1 players in Halo II (beat Karma and PacMaynE from MLG glory days on XBOX live) and almost participated in MLG but stopped playing due a bad injury in my right arm (severed my nerve -- have no feeling in half of my right hand, believe it or not)

Great experience and seriously one hell of a fun time with my friends during a two to three year period.

As for my main character in UO....the "infamous" Oblivion:

Oblivion -- definition: the state of being disregarded or forgotten

Name for my main character since roughly beta, sounded cool, love the definition....suits my character....and most people remember the name....i'm a walking state of irony and contradiction.

Let's hear it people!

Picus was born in Ultima Online way back in 1999. Myself and two friends all played on one account for a while and selected our names from some random book. We formed LynchMob Justice on Napa and proceeded to run one of the first Anti guilds on that shard. LMJ lasted a number of years and is fondly remembered as a good guild by those who were in and against it.

There is no specific reason why I picked this name back then, sounded good. I have stuck with it for ages and am fairly well known on the shard.

That is it in a nutshell, I am sure more will come at a later time.

well original name was Dioblow (ha ha) YEAH I KNOW! its spelt wrong, I was then and still are spelling challenged. It was suppose to say diablo. But O well.

I created "Static" because for whatever reason I love the "white noise" sound so I was like why not.

Then "A Blind Man" I created him for a funny name since he is a elite thief, "You notice a blind man looking in Static's bags", lol Funny I thought and its doing well.

CaesarDoP was used because Caesar was the name of my First Char and DoP stands for the first Guild I started Defenders of Peace.

Caesar was the only char I played for 3 years and then I created Dante and used that char as a Mule.

In Real Life Caesar is the name of my Older Brother, Father and Grandfather, it is also the middle name for my son, Thomas Caesar. Dante is my Real life name.

So there you have it.

Peace be with You My U-Hall Friends and Family

My brother and i played always together on RPG games. Then one game in Daggerfall you needed to name your character. So we decided to combine our both names. Freddy and Marc became Frarc.

Since then every first character we made in a game is a warrior named Frarc.

In UO we moved from Great Lakes to Drachenfels when the shard came up.

It was a new beginning. So we named the Character New Frarc. But we also made a story behind it for UO.

Oddly enough, when I first saw your name here, I automatically assumed that you were one of those Felucca smart-arse trash-talking guys, and your name had something to do with the "General Education Diploma" we have here for those who didn't finish their normal high school education. LOL =/

Mine comes from IRC.
I used to use "Kimi", and add little flourishes whenever I was doing something else.
One time, I was watching .hack//liminality so I changed my nick to Kiminality, then something happened, the details of which evade my memory, and my IRC settings decided to save it as default nick. It wasn't a bad nick, so I never bothered to change it.

Old Man of UO

I was once a Young Man of UO... but after 13 years I realized the barmaids at The Falconers Inn in Skara Brae were no longer asking me for ID. It was kinda fun pulling out my ID card and dropping it on the floor, then ogling them as they bent over to pick it up. It all got kinda blurry after a while and it wasn't just the ale. The oculist gave me a new eyeglass prescription... with bifocals... and it occurred to me I wasn't as good as I once was... but I'm as good once as I ever was! HEHE... that still cracks them up at The Falconers Inn.

So now I carry a few cheap baubles, like Arielle's that she carelessly strews about. Drop a shiny or two on the floor and it catches their eye every time as it rolls under the table before they bend over to pick it up. They pick up the bauble, gently place it on the table, then blush as they realize they've been tricked. Sometimes they even pinch my cheek for being so "cheeky." My glasses are a bit thicker now, but my farsight is just as sharp.

That's when I became the Old Man of UO.

i picked Bardie cause as simply as it sounds he started off as my bard, now one of my reds that some on napa might know ;)

i picked IgotWood for my LJ (i can be quite simplistic)

I picked OfTheUnseen cause i was tired of all the char with that name on napa that i didn't like so i made a char same name and make the guild SUX...so i got to run around with OfTheUnseen (Sux) :D

My main character has been StrangeWays - a compilation of Strangways (the first British Secret Service officer to die in a James Bond film, which was kind of a hint as to how often I would die in UO), and Strange Days by the Doors.

Margaret Thrasher - our GM started a red guild which included QueenOfEngland, Princess Die, a few others.

JackKnife - just a good name for a tinker/bowyer kinda guy.

When I first started playing, my first character was a Paladin. When trying to come up with a name, my best friend kept giving me these weird names at all the bad suggestions I made. So I started typing things into babelfish and seeing what they were in different languages. As she often told me I was "Funny as Hell", I decided to try that, with the German translation coming up as "lustig als Hölle". So by simply replacing the "ö" with an "o" and adding the apostrophe, Lustig als'Holle was born (and then later that day, I repeatedly died!!!).

My first characters name is Percival. I tried to think of a name that was original long ago and came up with Percival who was a fictional knight of the roundtable in Camelot. For a while I was the only Percival on Pac. Long ago I used to post on Stratics as Percival but somehow another poster adopted the name Percival and posted on Stratics (he played on Great Lakes). For a while we were both posting as Percival but it was confusing so I quit posting using that name, so since the name Percival is allready used, I chose to add on the goh which stands for Guardians of Honor (the name of the guild Percival is in.)

Well Metalstorm is a name I use often for many boards.

It was the title of a Sci-Fi(future post nuclear war type) movie in the 80's and the I just loved the sound of it.

So I made it the sur name (or is that Sir name?) of my first char.

Tal Metalstorm. In game, Tal is short for Talis. In rl, Tal is my three initials.

My other favorite char is Hando Verfist. My girlfriend at the time came up with that name.
Hando is a tamer/bard and makes gold 'Hand Over Fist' :D

Then there is Veramocor. He's the second char I made back in early '98.

My memory is foggy but it had something to do with the solo Ultima games. I think it was from #5. His name is actually one of the words of power or destruction or something like that. I can't really remember because it was so looong ago.

The rest of the chars have no deep seated meaning. I just make up names as I go along :)

Ok I'm game,

When I started on GL's my first characters name was Willa... because I was at the creation screen going OMG what do I choose. And I kept thinking no... I don't want to choose some "movie" name and steal some name so I kept thinking and thinking and finally I looked over and saw the movie Willow on my shelf and I was like... hum.... Willa!

So then she married and her name because Willa of the Yew-wood... which she's been ever since.

But as for my current name MalagAste... It's Drowish. And yes it has meaning... but that's a secret.

*grins* And since I couldn't use the hyphen here or in the game it's not in it but his name is Malag-aste Hla-ate to be technical.

He's a very interesting character and I enjoy playing him. I'm still on GL's... though I did try Legends for awhile.

Though to be honest there is a Malag'aste on every single shard.

Hmm... well, as I recall, I was sitting at the creation screen for about 30 minutes, trying to think of an interesting name loosely based off my name or interests.

Doing the standard rhyming thing let me to think of homonyms, which let me to Jhym eventually.

I use that as my main for almost every game I play, though I just found one game where someone had already used it and they wouldn't let me make one (fie upon thee.)

As for my other chars, they were specific to the time they were made, so some of the names make sense only in that context.

Hmm ok I'm trying to remember the time line here. I started playing uo shortly after t2a I think. But when I started... I had created a character on a roommates account. I had played on that account for quite a while. I think I finally realized how much it was upsetting the roomie so I created my own account around 2000.

From that point I had played UO a while and wanted to try my hand at merchanting. Gheed is a merchant in act 1 of Diablo II (The Rouge Encampment). So that was my Stratics name when I registered and is the name of my Main.

- I stole my name from Robert Jordan. I did it for many, many reasons beyond the potentially obvious. I thought long and hard about the name before joining the MyUO Boards and then I continued to use it when I joined Stratics. I have only used the name in-game for one event paying homage to Draconi.

All of my in-game UO names are a result of thinking about what/how I wanted that character to be and as a result they have some history about them. I think 90% of my characters have little RP descriptions of themselves on that character info scroll on the paperdoll. I often RP that character when talking with others as well. I like to RP with my bard/tamer wolf brother the most (not Perrin.. I don't use any RJ main character names); yet I rarely 100% RP.

Hail Folks,

I have always loved role play, and have always believed I had plenty of creativity and imagination. Two among many of my favorite Science Fantasy products are Tolkien's Middle Earth, and almost any Dungeon and Dragon's worlds. As a self-declared Christian, I also like and enjoy using Biblical names where I deem them meaningful and appropriate.

Ergo Lord Elladan comes from the Middle Earth warrior Elf, Moses is a Scribe of great Renown, Methuselah, Guild Leader of the Singing Lord's of Baja (SLOB), is a Bard and Peacer of Worlds." Dar was a mixture of "Dar the Beastmaster," and Darius, young Elven Cousin of Lord Elladan. Another of their cousins is Aerowyn, my attempt to blend an Elven name with Archery. Almost every character I have ever created was given a name that seemed "real" and "reasonable" to me for the virtual world of Sosaria/Britannia.

I created each character to be a virtually real person in the virtual world they would inhabit. A few have very Human names, as they, like Lord Cantabrigian British, arrive here from Earth.

Then there are the one, two, or a few names that EAMythics Devs have decided were so "world shattering" that they intimidated and threatened me to abandon.

To all those who chose and choose names meant to be names, I say a heartfelt Thank You! To all the rest of you and your characters (you know who you are), I recommend to you the Name Change Tokens available from EAMythic.

I intend no offense by sharing these views, and where none is intended, none IS.

I try, usually successfully, to accept comments of others, and hope they do likewise with mine. Sometimes I fail.

Back in '97 I read my first ever Star Wars EU novel. Shadows of the Empire. The main villian in the book (Prince Xizor) was the head of a criminal organization called The Black Sun.

I was taking various programing and web design classes at the time so I adopted the name of Xizor and started up a Star Wars fan site. After playing webmaster for a little while I caught the attention of a guy who went by the name Kronos online. He ran a Star Wars website called "The Black Sun Syndicate". He was unable to maintain it any longer (rumor was he was going to jail for some computer related crime), and asked me to take over.

I adopted the name Black Sun and took over running the site until I decided to close it around 2000. I liked the name, so I kept using it.

As for my UO alt's names:
Corran, Guri & Jacen - All stolen from the Star Wars EU
Raven Blackmoore, Alex Kanebridge, Lothor, Areyr Woodseed - Names I made up.
Aquaman - He's a goof off fisherman character, so I designed/dressed him like the lamest comic book hero I could think of.
Tony Manero - My first bard, a Discord Fencer (aka Disco Warrior) named after John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever
Jubei Kibagami - Named after the main character in one of my favorite anime movies.
Gordon Ramsay - Coolest chef ever.

I like playing with words, I like puns. My first and main character in UO was Petra Fyde = petrified. It amused me to make a warrior with a scaredy-cat name :). My hubby liked the idea and copied it to make his 'Terry Fyde' and we've maintained the 'silly pun' theme for most of our characters. My crafter on Europa, who's almost as old as Petra, is Runlykell (read as Run like 'ell). The only time I did one differently was when I was invited to put a character in a roleplay guild as a lich. She is Xorartep. If anyone is feeling masochistic enough I'll provide a full list of my char names by pm on request. :D

My first ever char, mage, is Cailleach Bheaur. I live in the Gaeltacht, the Gaelic speaking world, and I wanted something that would reflect that and my love of celtic myths. So, I went hunting and found The Cailleach Bheaur. When I made other chars, I followed on the theme and, bar one, all have celtic goddess names. My little crafter is Sorcha; Gaelic again, it's the Gaelic version of Claire, but also means 'bright shining one' or 'light', and I just liked it, so that's what I called her :)

I love that people take so much time to think of meaningful names for their characters; they are, in a way, parts of us too and it's great that their names reflect that :)

When I first played Ultima (yes. the ORIGINAL Ultima), I was just getting into computers. This is 1982, so an Apple ][+ was state of the art and it had a built in BASIC interpreter called Applesoft. I bought Ultima in a ziplock back from a local computer store and loaded it up.

It asked for a character name and I wasn't sure what to use. Something LOR-like? Or something from the Elric of Melnibone world?

NO!

I wanted something original! So, being a computer geek/nerd and wanting an original name, I wrote a little Applesoft program that generated pages and pages of random names based on American English and LOR syllables.

On something like page 6 I saw the name Setnaffa. That looked cool.... Sort of God-like (Set is the Egyptian God of Chaos) and muslim (almost like Mustaffa), so I went with it.

I still remember some of the other names...Fyss Gatruxeo and Titoomcom Taj, but most of the rest were just garbage.

Long Story Short, I've been Setnaffa ever since. He's usually a thief, but in UO, he's a Paladin.

My second character is Nestor which is a name from Greek mythology. I was trying to think of a name for a bowcrafter and Nestor seemed to fit. My third character is Klang and the name came as a kind of onomatopoeia for a blacksmith. Not sure about where I heard it before.... just kind of pulled it out of the air. Seemed like a perfect blacksmith name. Then I made a treasure hunter character for my guild and I tried to recall the name of Captain Hook's sidekick from Peter Pan (and my memory failed me) but I came up with the name Smedly. Smedly sounds like a pirate sidekick kind of guy who would be going around digging up treasure. Later I realized the name I was looking for was Smee.....oh well I still liked Smedly.... not sure where it came from though :)
