I was looking for technical help In Stratics and elsewhere, everywhere .. and for a very long time. The reason I am posting this here is that I can't find an appropriate thread for this information and ... as I mentioned this to a few friends (including a clerk in the grocery store while in a lineup) lol - - I started discovering so many people or others they know, having the same computer problems and so happy to hear I what I found as the SOLUTION to the problems of badly lagged typing and being unable to stay connected to the Internet which, in my case, was continuously disconnecting and reconnecting.

Problems were as follows: (SOLUTION BELOW)
1. Typing was SLOW: Typing was lagging and words didn't show up on the page until a long delay after typing the word.
2. Unable to make corrections: Making corrections became more and more impossible to backspace to erase a word l There would be a huge lag and then suddenly a burst of words would be erased if not the whole sentence.
3. Unstable worsening Internet Connection: Staying connected to the Internet was interrupted and became worse over time, until, for example, it became so bad that after logging into the game and starting to play the other day, the internet would go down and reconnect in a few moments, and then go down again and reconnect .. without me doing a thing to help. I would log into Ultima Online, get a few seconds to do something, lose connection, have to log in again .. UGH.. So ..

In the past year, I have contacted our Service Provider, Telus but no solution was found. I have high speed home internet with that company. They could find nothing wrong. Seems I needed a new keyboard. But that was NOT the case. Perhaps my computer was getting old and causing all the havoc.

Yes I did everything possible-- of course by first with checking for loose connections and doing all virus checks including more that players here suggested I try. Our service provider always kept me jumping through hoops to check things I had already checked.

This time I DID all the hoop checking before I made the line-line PHONE call to Telus Technician, because I could not type or stay connected to the internet by using the Computer.

Um .. The technician, Harry, told me to connect my computer to the internet so he could check my computer. So I did that. He said he lost connection with my computer. So I told him why I was calling. Then I asked him to wait and because the Internet would come back up and I would let him know when it came up because I could see it happening on my tool bar.

SOLUTION:

Result: Harry, discovered the modem they had renewed last year, was shutting off and on , resulting in the internet continuously being disconnected and rebooted. Harry instantly ordered their latest wireless modem for my computer for me to pick up at our local Telus Store (free) which I did immediately, and after installing it, my three year old computer works perfectly!

Hope this helps someone out there having the same problem. Seems the old modem which was a replacement for another very old modem that wasn't working, wasn't a good modem. So the new one I hope will be better. :)

Some modems are in effect, little electric heaters. If they don't get enough air circulation around them, they overheat and shut off... on and off... on and off... and eventually fail. I had one with similar behavior as yours, bought a new one that worked for a while, and then would reset once an hour. The real problem was I had my modem setting in a closed cabinet with my UPS power backup and it was just getting too hot. Now I have everything sitting in an open cabinet with plenty of circulation... no problems so far!

That would be a bad situation for anyone. Thanks for posting.

I am always aware of heat problems and dust build up, so, the computer room has a door open to the outside patio, a screened window open all summer and winter long behind the desk on which the modem sits alone totally exposed to the air. A tall floor fan is usually blowing fresh air across all computer equipment so I wear heavier sweaters and thin tight fitting gloves in the winter to stay warm. The modems, both the very old one and the newer one, caused major problems that I thought were my computer's fault. Now I have this new wireless modem and am hoping it will keep working for a long time.
(If not - I'll be back here. :))

Wasn't there a technical help forum in here at one time?
