SW Ships like UO Houses

Earlier my son told me that the player owned space ships in Star Wars Tales of Old Republic will be set up almost exactly like player owned houses in UO. i.e: Highly customizable.

One of the things I've always loved about UO has been fixing up my house and making it truly "mine". I like seeing others that are well done as well.. (most go way overboard IMO).

I was thinking this might be something that would tip the scales and convince me to give the game a try. I was a beta tester in SWG, but only played for about a year after live.. for some reason the game just didn't captivate me.

Also TOR seems to have a much more open sandbox style of mechanics, another thing in its favor.

Thoughts?

Well that does happen... drag.

The web site does have six different ships though, and it does say they will be fully customizable.

I've heard a few comments about 'customisable spaceships' in SW:TOR, but they all seem to be based on hugely exagerrating coments made by developers - I've a feeling this one came from reports on the comments mentioned here, but from the main SW:TOR forums there's no sign at all of any really impressive ability to customise coming soon, as this thread seems to confirm. I'd love to be proved wrong, but I fear the best we can look for is slightly designable interior rooms on ships that can only be seen by those invited aboard.

There's 'customisable' in the UO sense of 'here's a dirt plot, make anything you want with a few dozen wall types and then decorate it with anything you can find, then the whole world can see the result', and what seems to be the more modern mmo version of 'you get something, you can change the colour, add a few pre-determined pieces on to it, and (in the case of these starships) choose some weapon types or defence systems, and that's enough to call it customisable'.

Sadly the whole idea of 'customising' is horribly misused and abused in the newer mmo world and is often just a smokescreen for 'we couldn't make something decent work and look good so we didn't bother, here's a disappointing compromise', usually accompanied by 'it won't be fully there at launch but will follow later'..... :(

I wouldn't hold out too much hope for it though, remember, the ship-to-ship combat is described as a "tunnel shooter". A $200-$300 million game, and the ship-to-ship combat literally puts you on a rail with very little movement controlled by you. Had I not seen the trailer or heard the interview with the devs about it, I'd chalk it up to false rumors.
