Is there a base level of Stealing for stealing from NPC's in town?

Funny story i was in Vesper and saw a crate. I removed the trap, picked the lock, and BAM! I died as I attempted to steal the dye in there. Then again I only had .5 Stealing.....:)

hehe, you can get guardwhacked for stealing in town with 120 stealing, if you don't wait till they're looking the other way :D

LOL but then sometimes even when you think they're all looking away, I swear some of them have eyes on the back of their heads!!!

I think with something like a 10 tile radius between you and the nearest NPC and you (usually) get away with the theft unnoticed. Skill does influence your chance of success/failure, but also limits the weight of the item you can steal successfully. If you're only at 75 skill and try to steal a 12 stone item, you're going to fail every time, and if an NPC is close enough, you're going to get yourself guard whacked.

On a new thief I don't attempt crates until about 65-70 skill, and even then I try and keep the weight of my targets around 4 or 5 stones.

Hmmm ... back then when there was no Trammel or what yer call this posh lands with the fancy colourful trees, we used to carry wardrobes around. When you wanted to help yerself to a tasty looking banana or cabbage in a town chest yer would place the wardrobe between yerself and the shop-keeper and enjoyed yer dinner.

But now, since yer say that the posh people in the towns have eyes at their backs now, I guess this neat little trick doesn't work anymore.

Crazy times we are living in ....

Would that have made it the Armoire of Invincibility???? :hahaha::hahaha::hahaha:

(That's an 8-bit Theater joke, for those who haven't read the sprite webcomic)

I don't know about no armoire or something ... but it sure was cumbersome to drag a wardrobe around. Things yer do for a free dinner ...

And don't ask me where I got that wardrobe from. My mother might be reading this ...
