Starting Over

Indulge me. I have actual UO-related questions below.

A few weeks ago, wind driven wild fires rampaged through the hills of Southern California. From "Its all safely on the other side of the freeway" to "My back yard is burning and all of the fire trucks are busy elsewhere" was all of about 3 minutes. (For those of you living the So Cal area, Channel 9 focused on my house live for more than an hour--I turned it off after ten minutes).

I am happy to say that Rick, Susan and Emily escaped safely with the clothes on our backs and the heat singeing our necks.

Idaho, Yoshi, Fletch and the other denizens of Sosoria (Baja) stayed behind to cover our escape. Sadly, all contact with these heroes has been lost.

Support from the community has been amazing. We are settling into a rental home, and the insurance process has finally started moving. In time the house will be re-built and everything that can be replaced will be.

It is time to re-establish contact with Sosoria and rescue the team!

That said:

--Any recommendations on computer specs? I am pretty ignorant on the subject but would customize for UO (90% 2D plus UO Assist/10% KR) and some pretty intense spreadsheet/database work.

--How do I re-establish UO Assist? Any documentation, passwords and such that I may have had over the years is long gone. How about auto map?

--I assume I can simply download the latest client and patches. Any suggestions on which download site is more reliable? I will have a pretty good connection once everything is set up.

Thank God for your safe return and good luck with all you still need to go through.

The UO website should have the specs for a new machine.

UO assist on the other had can be reinstalled and if you send them an email they can send you an email with your seed and keys for your account(s).

I've been pondering giving KR an extended try but all the reports about relearning how to do everything I've been doing for 10 years or so... isn't very appealing! One thing that may get me to change over is the fact that people running KR move faster vs people using 2d. People using 2d however wait a while for KR to crash then get their revenge! Most of the best of UOAM and UOA have been put into the KR UI and the new crafting macros for KR are said to be far superior to UOA, so if you want to relearn now may be the time.

My Current system runs 2D/UOA quite well, but there are issues with KR that may or may not be the system itself:

I'm going to use IDE-to-SATA converters on the current HD instead of getting a new drive (for now).


Hopefully the new system will fix the few KR issues I have and I can really start learning that client.

UOA: Tugsoft has instructions on the site for getting an unlock code. May not cost you one thin dime, depending on things. Worst case - a new registration fee.

I can run 2D & KR on my 7 year old & 4 year old machines, as well as on my two newest ones (which arrived a year ago this week).

The best guide for a computer to play UO is as follows:

1. XP will run it with less hassle than Vista, due to the "run as administrator" issues and others, but both will typically work. Any machine capable of running XP is more than sufficient for UO Assist & 2D; Running Kingdom Reborn typically requires a video card from the last 4-5 years.

2. IF you attempt to play KR, KR has less issues with Nvidia video cards than others. While ATI video cards work fairly well, avoid integrated (part of the motherboard) video that uses non-Nvidia chipsets, as they have given issues. And, KR also works better if you use one of the player-designed interfaces (see the KR forum), and there is also a lot of instruction on the KR forum for making KR function as close to 2D as possible.

3. For UO Assist & 2D, note that some AV/firewall software will require you to use a different start method other than the default for UOA - if you have trouble getting UO to load via UOA, go into UOA's settings, and change the start method.

4. As Petra said, any account that already has been registered for UO Assist can get its key back easily. The key is based on the account's seed, and keys are unique to the accounts (though the same no matter what computer you install them on). Logging in with a trial download will get you your seed, and using that seed to look up the key will work, so long as you can log into the UO account.

5. One last note: the current downloads are so old, expect monumental patch times.

my laptop runs KR awesome..
its a dual core2 duo *gotta run kr in one core tho* 2.26ghz laptop with 4 gb ram and vista ultimate 64.
it has a 320 gb sata drive
the video is the intel media graphics, 4 series. dual head so i can run kr on a monitor and watch movies or tv shows on the main laptop screen.

im guessing anything along tho lines should be perfect.

i say get a laptop, the mobility is a huge plus..

thank goodness you and your family are safe!

As far as computers, you might want to look at the SA site to see what they say about the expansion (assuming it comes out next year). Otherwise, its hard to imagine any new computer that wouldn't run 2D or spreadsheets just fine. Pick up a holiday special.

If I were doing a lot of spreadsheet/database management though, I'd prolly want a big-a**ed monitor so I could see more while i worked (ie desktop with 22-24" monitor > notebook).
