Starting out on a new shard

Hello all. Been having a lot of fun playing a new shard, Legends, and wanted to share my
experience plus give some tips that others may find useful.

My first character was a mage, however I chose imbuing and lock picking for my 50 start skills.
Bought the mage skills, took those to 40. Was lucky and found a blue bug at New Mag stalls, but after
that I used a packy to follow me around for the other character until I could get bugs for them.

To get me started I picked cotton, sheared sheep, and did escorts. This kept me busy, sold my
resources to an NPC for regs, spellbooks, armor, all those small things. If you can find a vendor to rent (which I did), the minister of trade is great for pinks and other items to sell on the vendor.
This alone will bring in good income. Also played around with Ettins outside New Haven.

With 50 imbuing to start I was able to unravel all my goodies I found/looted and purchased plain
leather armor in New Haven. Was then able to imbue a 100% LRC suit which was a great help.

As soon as possible I went to the blacksmith shops in Bucs Den, used my unlock and telekinesis
to open chests. Unlock and three telekinesis to set off traps. Here is where I also work up my lock picking. Found some good armor, mostly to unravel and the rest used for clean up points. The huts just north of Skara cotton fields also have chest to loot. Nice loot plus the clean up points. Right now I have two pieces of the
mage armor from clean up points.

Once I felt brave enough went to Tokuno Island, Homare. Right outside the Homare moongate I'd
look for a monk. Pull up the monk's health bar and run off to find a tuski wolf, lure the wolf
back to the monk, run past the monk and invis myself. I used an invis scroll. As soon as the
monk begins fighting the wolf I was able to attack it myself without taking any hits.

My other characters are a scribe, miner, lumberjack, and alch. Started off using a
packy to take my character to a shop and work my skills up. Not trying to grind to a GM, only
enough skill to get what I need. Like recalls and mark scrolls.

As of today I have a Tokuno ship. This is great for trading between characters, (my home) my intent is
to get my craft skills high enough to make cannon balls, then going after a merchant ship. Plan
on using an invis scroll while on the ship until I come across the merchants. From there I'll
just need to scuttle the ship in order to board and collect lots of goodies.

I hope no one takes this post as stupid, I'm just having a lot of fun and wanted to share.
The people on Lengends are great. Today I did get a fire beetle, a blue bug, plus a few cannons
via chat channel. What was gifted to me I will give back to the shard/other newbies. That
fire beetle was truly appreciated, now I will work my miner up to GM for salt peter.

Long live UO!

i tried building a character on legends but couldnt find the arties for sale i needed. so i just bought everything on atlantic (sots powerscrolls arties stat scrolls mounts consumables etc) and transfered the chracter....

i must say tho the first hour did bring me back. made like 500k farming ratmen and selling the arrows. after 25k i had a guild, and the free vvv orny, crimson, kasa, and crytalline ring. the character probably would have been playable, but it was just looking to be too much time to get it maxed.

A second house would be fantastic for each acct. However, I believe I'm going to open another acct so I can place on Legends. Just want to make certain first. There are some great locations I'm just drooling over, and the ones I like are nothing huge..just 18 18. Really don't understand why a second house would be so bad, it would bring the whole UO community together and not just players from the same shard.

Here's a side note, I made a mistake today when I took the fire beetle, wrong character. No biggie, I put a bid in at the New Mag stall and will switch to the correct character after I do that. It's great to have to think again while playing.

Legends you have a nice and welcoming shard.

I do love me some Legends. Our people there are pretty great and helpful. :)
Welcome aboard to our cozy little shard. :)

I think I would be willing to join a new shard if it were excluded from xfer tokens and shields. Having items and an economy separate from the rest of the shards would be super cool. I would actually be impressed to see people with hard to get drops. On other shards, anyone can buy 100mil off pay to win stores and get whatever they need.

Also wouldn't mind if artifact drops were non-transferable. This might spread out the population to different areas rather than people farming places with the best return per time spent.

There is Siege...but 1 charcter per account for Siege just isn't enough. Also not a fan of Felluca. I can't compete in PvP against players who have been PvPing for 5+ years.

Used to have a house or two or three there. Was a wonderful and fun shard when I was there for a little while ...

Still have a few characters built there.

I have always pointed out if your feeling bored or over worked...go to a new shard. Try your hand to see how far you can get .Test your skill building. I bet you will have a ton of fun.. This is the only game out there where you can march to a different drummer and be at peace. To the OP, congrats on your fun filled work on legends. You did wonders in my view. Keep up the good work.!
As for the rest of you feeling hemmed in or bored.. try it. It wont cost you nothing to go to a shard and see what you can do with barely the beginner pack and your wits.

Lovely post. I am actually playing the game quite similar and enjoy it very much. But I wanted a tougher challenge and started on Siege. In a nutshell: starting from zero and playing the game as it was meant to be is fantastic and shows you, how great this game in fact ( still ) is! But everything depends on the community and the climate of a shard. And here go 10 of 10 point to Siege as far as I can see... And if I could place on another shard, I might have tried Legends some day. But unfortunately, you can transfer to and from Legends, which makes the shard less attractive for me. A good economy essentially depends on the absence of shard transfers.

Back in 2007 perhaps? That's when I started on UO on Legends. Yadd was the second character I ever created (thus Yadd of Legends). Had a house in Fort Briarwood, which was fully populated at the time. In a guild called WWoL (Wizards and Warriors of Legends), with a vendor house in NW Luna.

Not quite sure what this means. Somebody would be glad to act as the middleman to help you transfer it to the right character

That's never been a problem for those of us who can't afford them, but I know what you mean. Of course I've always pushed for even easier shard transfers.

Could have been... I know it was awhile ago... I'm trying to think of what the new thing was back then... thinking it was not long after the crystal shadow thing... whenever that was.

To the OP, really great story and glad you enjoyed it. That's what many enjoy, when they start on Siege and can't transfer chars and stuff :)

I had been asking, from we got second house on Siege, if we could changes it, so it was a second house on any shard, not just Siege. That way, players would take down their second house on Siege if they started playing on a different shard.

I love new Siege players can place on Siege but sadly not all stay on Siege, for some, it just not the right shard but their stupid second house stay, even when they stopped playing Siege.

That is a great point Freja! The second house on Siege was great for people like me that are active on Siege. Not so great for Siege overall though when there are tons of empty houses and dirt plots from everyone that came made enough gold to place a plot and have not been seen since. A lot if not most of those inactive houses would go poof overnight if the owners could place a second house on prodo shards. Everyone would be happier and there is plenty of open real estate on every production shard.... Except maybe Atlantic. The second house on Siege was a double edged sword it allowed guys like me to place the second house and in my case build Port Tyr and rather than spend 15%-20% of my game time on Siege to split my game time evenly between legends and siege. Different shards offer a very different experience Siege of course be the most unique in the fact that the ruleset is so much different from prodo. Siege not for everyone Neither is legends and Gasp Niether is Atlantic. Personally I would like to see the second house option on a global level because people that would spend a % of their game time on a quiet shard, just won't because they are not going to devote a 2nd or 3rd account to a shard the might only spend 15%-20% of their game time on and living out of a bank box is no fun.

That! Siege is stuffed now with useless real-estate. On the other Hand, without the 2nd-house option on siege I might have never tried it - and I might have missed a new love story (Alzheimer & Siege)... In a nutshell: Give everyone the 2nd house option for prodo-shards AND allow them to choose Siege as 2nd housing-place. Which means: You can either place your 2nd house on Siege or elsewhere... Everybody would be happy!

Oh not say the second house on Siege did not bring in some new folks that found they loved the rule set. Just that it also brought in a lot of people that placed a plot just because they could. Around May I have to leave UO for the real world, I can't work 16-20 hour days and find time to play even a little bit from May through usually October or November. Traditionally I dropped most of my houses before I left the game for the summer, Keeping only the key places like the wolf house, the ant house and two of the island houses standing. I keep paying the subs cause I like them vet rewards :) I did that prior to the second house thing and when I came back in the fall some of my favorite spots were placed with dirt plots and they have been dirt plots ever since. I always dropped those houses so someone who wanted a good mining or training location for a house could have it. In hind sight I may as well have just left the houses and kept them public, that would be better than a bunch of private dirt plots. Those same people would want to place their second house on a prodo shard and at that point would remember their dirt plot on Siege and have to remove it to place on prodo :)

Yes. That would be great. I would have found my own private Island myself this way. However, we might not have been neighbors this way ;-)

Simple solution, even tho it is unpopular. You place a second house on any shard...but have to actually log into it at least once every 5 days to refresh it. End of the abandoned second houses.

Nope can't support that. When I am paying my subs and working 120+ hours a a week for 3-5 months out of the year and physically can't log in........ Which house should I lose my legends castle or my Siege Keep? Trust me after spending from 2AM to 2PM picking, washing and packing, then driving an hour and spending from 3pm-7pm selling, then getting home at 8pm and weeding, planting, feeding and if lucky getting between the sheets at midnight 6 days a week and spending Sunday catching up on everything I didn't get done Monday through Saturday....... The last thing on my mind is logging into UO. November through April I can play 20 hours a day every day if I want to, I am far from the only one that for work or other RL reasons simply can't log in every 5 days or even every 90 days and sometimes not even every 120 days. Now if you want to get rid of the 90 day no payers I am all for that, but as long as EA/Broadsword is getting $5000+ per year from me seems I am due the security of knowing my houses are going to be there when I return in the fall after my busy season is over and I can chill out over the off seasons with some UO.

Another option is to levy a heavy weekly property tax on empty plots after a week or so - that might discourage hoarding them

Right................. not.
I refuse to go back to the OMG I cant go on vacation!!!!!!! I need to be home for my houses...... Where the family says its only 10 days the game will be there when you get home.... no *pouts*
I pay a descent amount for my game time.... I don't need them to make it any more taxing thank you!

Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm not talking about houses. I'm talking about empty plots. Nobody is suggesting a tax on houses.

I could never remember to refresh a boat, I never could have plants because I don't remember to water them, fish have died under my watch because I forget to feed them, I wouldn't have remembered to feed my kids or my cat but they tend to either claw my leg or whine if I don't...

Since the house isn't going to beg, claw my leg or whine I am likely NOT going to remember to go click it. Typically I play on my home shard most the time.... but if there is something or someone I want to hang with on another shard then I hang there for awhile... Sometimes I get tired of the same crowd so I go hang out on Siege.... and reminisce about stuff that was.

I believe they was short on time and took an easy solution. Test Center shards already have it's own house server, so not hard to do the same for Siege and Mugen. Making it for all shard had been much harder and there would be a bigger risk, that something went wrong.
