Starting fresh in UO or on a new shard.

One of my favorite things to do in game is start new characters and train them up from scratch. Sometimes I will buy a couple mythic tokens other times I will just grind up from NPC bought skills. I know templates are very subjective and everyone has their own favorite, so not trying to start a debate of what template is best. Just simply putting out what I have and do use to get established on a new shard without transferring gold and items in, and keeping post AOS as pre AOS templates and play styles are for the most part obsolete.

The solen are your friend or not. The first character I make is always a Zoogi farmer, powder and bag runner. Necro is one of the easiest skills to get to 100 or above and Spirit speak rises right along side it. Necro and SS power scrolls are usually some of the cheapest. Powder of translocation, bags of sending and pet summoning balls are all very worthwhile and the gold and gems picked up along the way add up. Why a necro? Very simply they are low risk and you can kill the hive queens with Revs and not lose friendship, and by not killing the workers, the queens insta respawn. If you have a house or access to a house in the ant woods North of Vesper you can lead 7 to the porch wither them, loot them and zip off the powder quest fast. You don't need any high end gear. The crappiest no resist LRC suit will work as good as a high end suit. A couple of necro jewels are handy if you have not trained up. The higher your Necro and SS the faster your revs kill the queens. a couple of loot SDI jewels 18 sdi is not hard to find now days as loot and a scrappers greatly increases your wither mojo for killing the 7 on the porch. Using a Necro, SS, Mage template you can branch off in several directions with that one character. Sampire, Necro-Mage-Mystic-Weaver, LOL a necro -mage-disco template can be fun :) 120 necro 120 SS 120 music 120 disco 110 mage 100 poison and 30 focus with a suit with some MR and LMC in addition to the LRC

The Mystic is a gold making machine there is not much that will not fall to RCs given enough time. And like the necro template can be done on the cheap with a LRC suit that no one will envy. Mystic is just as easy to train up as necro but the scrolls to go to 120 are often harder to find and considerably more expensive. Particularly the 120 focus. The alternative is doing 120 imbuing which is NOT a cheap skill to get to 120. At 120 mystic and either 120 focus or imbue and with a easy to get 60SDI your RCs, Hail Storms, Nether Cyclones and bombards hit hard. Make it a disco mystic and it is a low cost PvM template. And there is plenty of room to add Spell weaving for the finishing big hits. My personal favorites to farm with this template are Tsuki Wolves and the Fairy Dragon Spawn, RCs and a WOD chaser take the renowned wyvern down fast and it takes the forgotten servants down fairly fast as well. Take yer bag of sending though you will be sending a lot of 60k piles of gold to the bank. You also have a shot at the insane tinker legs, which usually sell for a nice price. My personal best was 5 sets of Tinker legs over 10 hours of grinding the spawn. (Was wearing a 2470 luck suit with 100 lrc 20MR and 30 LMC and 70s resist) Have not repeated that since but it was a nice chunk of gold selling the legs. As far as just farming easy gold the mystic is my top template. 120 Mystic 120 Focus 120 mage 120 Spell Weaving 120 med 120 eval.

The Stealth Tamer, pirate, T hunter. With Pub 97 I got a lot more into taming. And here is where I will buy Mythic tokens :) I hate training taming....... Everyone hates training taming! Using a mythic to get to 90 taming takes a whole lot of sting out of training taming. I also am one of those weird folks that actually likes high seas and there is no faster way to get your pets through the training process than pounding on dread pirates, if you are half way decent with a ship and reloading cannons. Most of my tamers are also T hunters and have Mining/Lock Picking/Cartography on soul stones. Pub 97 turned the old and weak Blue Beetles into my main T hunting pets. A Unicorn as my miasma farming T map machine, and lesser hiryus of a chiv or bushido nature into my all around hunting pets. All easily obtained, trained and useful. And a 2 slot Najasaurus for farming Navrey ;) Unscrolled pets work just fine, not as well as 8X scrolled pets but fine never the less :) My unscrolled blue beetle with 80 cold resist chews through a frost dragon guardian fairly quick........ A unscrolled fire beetle or a fire drake even quicker. No need to worry about a taming mastery 3 until you are 120 tame and lore (real skill) a 1 or 2 will serve you just fine until then. Hiding and stealth are just plain handy for taming critters and for farming mobs. I do make some weaponized tamers usually of a archery or throwing type. Even if you just add a weapon skill and tactics your own and the pets damage output are much better DPS combined. But at 90 taming/lore/vet/hiding/stealth via a mythic and a set of jewels to get your tame and lore you can get up and running with a tamer. most of my tamer templates are 120 tame 120 lore 120 vet 100 mage 100 hide 100 stealth 60 focus and I shoot for suits with as much luck, MR and LMC as possible and 100 LRC is a given.

The warrior not my favorite template or character type to play but they are useful. I don't get carried away with them and usually run fencing or macing just because the 120 scrolls are cheap. 70 necro to 100 with jewels 120 weapon 120 chiv 100 bushi 120 tactic 100 parry 90 resisting spells. Probably not the best template but it does alright chewing through most mobs and tanks well enough on bosses.

Most characters you can do well enough with 7x100 in PvM the exception being the tamer if you don't have at least 115 tame and lore your control over your critters pretty much does not exist since they are all 108 at 3 slot. The mage, mystic and necro skills will just fizzle more at 100 and rarely at 120. And the warrior skills will not hit as often or for as much damage. Most folks could care less about the science of it and breaking the numbers down, they just want to make a template that is effective and fun to play. Whether they deliver or receive 2 more DPS does not really matter. Most of us myself included now days knowing 120 wrestling tact and anat on a pet means the pet will hit more often and for more damage VS 100 skills or that your RCs will fizzle a whole lot more at 100 than they will at 120 is good enough :) LOL I start looking at the numbers and start yawning fast ;)

I won't speak to PvP at all as I left that scene back in 2002/2003 and have had zero interest in it since then.

Just did this with a half trained beetle that is not even bonded as proof that even low skill character and pet can bring in the goldies to get going. Tamer is 92.5 real tame and 102 real lore 101 real vet jeweled to 120. Wearing a Turn in points mage suit and boom stick, fairly low end. Beetle was trained up on DPs thus the 100 anat and spend a half hour with the spell binders for the resisting. Beetle has all 80s except engergy (Will use it for T maps so needs the cold resist) He dominated the servants and the Wyvern dropped in around 4 minutes. Beetle has Armor Ignore and Rune Corruption. Totally unscrolled and very unskilled. Once the beetle has 100 wrestle anat parry and tact he will be quite efficient at killing a lot more things than a wyvern renowned. This is about as basic as it gets and pulled in several imbue ingreds and around 160k gold in the 40 minutes it took to work the spawn.

If I weren't traveling for work I'd totally be down to do this with you or others. I miss just doing stuff with people in this game other than champs.

Returning/new players are really going to need guides (like this). This game is extremely confusing to new players, especially if they've cut their teeth on other games. Many returning players probably remember churning out shirts at the tailor shop to get started, and stuff like that, and that just doesn't work anymore. I don't see UO really putting any meaningful effort into how to get started as a new player. At least any meaningful one other than the new player quests which are decent. I hope new players stick around long enough to find Stratics and the many guides stored here. It would have been nice if UO got it's forums up before EJ. New people won't know where to go for questions, hopefully they don't go to the empty "help chat". It takes a little understanding to even use global chat. Will they find Stratics? Some might but not all. Will Stratics make it obvious, if they do find us, there are other sub-forums here that help with various trades and skills? Would have been super nice had UO not made such an effort to alienate Stratics cause UO could *really* use them now. UO needs to promote Stratics or open their own forums before EJ or new people are going to be lost and give up on the game in a very brief time. Maybe the plan is just to entice old players to return, but a new generation of fresh blood would be awesome before we all die off from old age ;) I remember when EQ started I tried it for a few hours but nothing was like other games I was use to. I was left with the choice of just playing the games I knew like UO or spend countless hours figuring out a new system and just said screw it I'll play the games I know :)

@Tyrath if you want to raise imbuing easily get some blacksmithing and make daggers from gold ingots. Then just unravel the bags worth when you get full. Gold ingots are easily obtained in blackthornes.

Stratics alienated themselves with the shady top secret stuff. The constant ribbing and moaning that was done here doesn't help.

Those liches and gold eles are deadly to new players.

Combination of both alienating each other. And any forum or board is going to have ribbing and moaning.

A statement not totally without merit, however when your in business and tying to make enough money to keep the lights on it's a good idea to suck it up and retain the moral high ground. The official UO boards were constant moaning and complaints, one just learned to phrase it in a way one didn't get banned lol Especially since your boards comments were tied to your game account.

Whatever they do, they need to do something with that cluster YEah called new haven before EJ. Looks more like a Hobo camp than a town where you enter the world. New characters need to start with better stuff than that pack full of crap and armor. The New Haven escort quest teach nothing other than how to wait 5 minutes between escorts, the skill quest are just annoying and the rewards aside being blessed are junk. They seriously need to rework and modernize the intial new player experience, make it immersive and not boring. Who knows to hit , to use chat when they start? WHat new player has a clue what a moongate is let alone how it works? What new player even knows how to open their bank box? Just the basics of the game are elusive at best if you look at it from a never been in the game new player perspective. Even a returning vet from 15 years ago is going to be lost in 2017 it is not even close to the same game it was back then. Helpful players can only do so much in helping. Even a simple guided tutorial that covers the basic functions of the game would go a long way.

I'll have you know I just made a new scribe character to get gifts, bods and stuff. 50 skill. He came with 2 scrolls, a scribe pen PLUS 2 blank books! It's a little hard to imagine what I'll do with all that skill and gold I'll make off those supplies. I'll try not to go crazy and just waste it. Hopefully I won't run into a mongbat.

I met a new player in Haven a few days ago, he ran up to me and said 'Are you a player?' When I said I was, he replied 'I don't know what to do!' Sadly this is a common problem, it will only get worse if most of the people now trying out UO for the first time have only played modern MMO's. Usually they have beginner areas and lengthy tutorials which walk you through the first few levels and show you step-by-step how to craft. Some might call this hand-holding but it certainly saves a lot of mistakes and frustration, especially with choosing the right skills.

Stratics tried super hard with all the kiss ups and pom pom waving... but all that in the world won't help if everything is always one sided... IMO the DEVs did most of the damage when they had folk like Jeremy actually being a community liaison and then quit doing that in favor of being "hush hush and Mum" about everything leaving players to speculate and wonder and start concocting silly theories without any sort of input...

The DEVs shot themselves in the foot by leaving players in the lurch for ages on end... they are ever so slowly improving with the not so Monthly Monthly Newsletter... the Meet and Greets and such... But I'll say they don't make many inroads when they LOL at questions asked by players and toss them out... and other such things. As well the lack of updates on the official website and obscure way of reporting when such meetings are to occur don't help...

Before EJ begins yes they need their own forums... but that won't do much good if people are afraid to post there for fear of losing their precious accounts. I know I for one don't plan to post there ever. They need a community liaison... one that can actually answer important questions without being snarky towards customers... as well as being able to actually GET answers from the DEVs without being shut down time and time again with nothing but giggles and elusiveness.

The problems go both ways... yes players can be rude, obnoxious and downright vulgar... But many are just seriously passionate about their cause... be it PvP, PvM, Deco related or related to gameplay quality...

But a real community liaison would be able to pick through all that and find the true root of the issues and bring those to the DEVs so things can get resolved or communicated in a positive manner and make both sides more productive and happy.
