Stacking HLD

I'm rebuilding my garg wraith thrower's suit. Can you stack HLD?

For example, he has 30 HLD on his Mace & Shield Glasses. Can I get away with only putting 20 HLD on the weapon to have a total of 50 HLD? Or will only the highest HLD be computed (i.e. the 30 from the glasses)? I think I could check this on the SA client, but I only have 2D running on my laptop while I am traveling. Thanks for your help!

Yes, but unlike many item modifiers the effect is not simply additive. For example using the 30% HLD from Mace and Shield and 50% HLD from a weapon does not equal an 80% chance for HLD.

Given:
X=Mace and Shield HLD chance (30%)
Y=Weapon HLD chance (50%)

HLD % Chance != X + Y

Rather the effect fires independently for each piece, so in the above example your HLD chance is 65%.

HLD % Chance = X + (1 - X) *Y

So, your above example results in an overall HLD of 44%. You need 29% on your weapon to get a 50% chance overall with Mace & Shield glasses.

Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know. Now to craft my new weapon with 30 HLD... (not sure I can put 29 on it)

Out of curiosity, how did you figure this out or is this referenced somewhere?

I read it in the forums ages ago. I can't find the post unfortunately, though I believe it was confirmed by a Dev.

Unfortunately, since the difference is rather small it would take a large sample size to test with any confidence in the result.

I think some people believe that if you have HLD on the glasses and HLD on the weapon that they stack for -50 DCI or as Curly's example some people would believe that you get 80% for HLD. I think those were the two main misconceptions about stacking HLD. The way it was explained in simplified terms is that if you have 50% on the weapon and 30% on the glasses, half the time the 30% goes off it is already nullified because it can only go off once, so in this example the actual percentage of having HLD go off is 65%.
