mechanical pets, and golems should not take up stable slots because they are not real (and I dont mean real life) pets like wolves, dragons, etc. they don't eat fruits, meat, and they don't even bond to you. Stable slots should be used for real pets you feed that bond to you not ones that don't.
Here is some of my ideas and I would like others to add suggestions.
Since they are something that is crafted by a tinker we should be able to lock them down in our houses with some kinda post made by tinkers these posts would be blessed and have so many charges once the charges are used up you would have to purchase another one
Now I know some players don't have houses, and might not think this is a good idea, but I did think of you also I was thinking of a deed made by tinkers were you click on the deed Target the mechanical pets, or golem then they go into the deed. these deed would be blessed and have so many charges once the charges are used up you would have to purchase another one. When you go to undeed the mechanical pets, and golems it would work like you were using a summoning ball. This way you can't be hidden and just undeed them.
I would even go for the posts or deeds to sold by a NPC tinker or a stable hand.

Oh ... I have some realy nice ideas about golem-pets. (Or at least ... I really like them. :D ) But its not necessary to post them on two forums at the same time. Thought I might get them over here after the launch of SA.
As for stabling and stable slots for mechanical-pets .... more like a workaround that problem: With the purchase of SA every accounts gets 2 more stable slots. (From the last posted UOHoC.)

ehm not for ruin your idea, but the new mechanical pets shall eat meat... are bio-mechanical and are not the same thing of a golem...

And even if they aren't alive, Golems still take up space and require maintenance.

Ok that I didn't know its hard to keep up with everything and read all these new threads so I missed the feeding part and the bio part.or even remember if you read it or not LOL, but still they are crafted pets, and still shouldn't take up stable slots. If chickens have their own chicken coops. Then their should be something for mechanical pets, and golems.
Does anyone know if the chicken coops will hold other critters like rabbits, squirrels, and ferrets?( figured I would ask that question here instead of making a new thread) If they don't we need hutches to put in our houses. :D

Stables need an overhaul in general. It should go back to the old method where you can stable as much as you want. But now raise the costs so it isn't trivial to stable pets.

A dragon costs 1,000 gold per week paid upon claiming. If you don't have enough money to pay you can't claim the pet. If you have more than 10,000 gold in bills outstanding you need to pay otherwise you can't claim/stable any pets.

You mean the times, when ...
- stables could actually be full, that you werent able to stable anything
- you had to remember, where you stabled your pets
- you had to try out at another stable when your preferred one was full
