When did the Merchant's Trinket, Undertaker's Staff, and Smuggler's edge join the game, and what the heck is Monster Stealing? (Test Center)

Yeah I just saw these too. I was on a Gargoyle character so I could not test them, but they are interesting.

Where do (or who do) these come from?

Monster stealing was added in months ago. There are some very handy potion type items you can get from them.

There are gates on Test Center, on New Haven docks that give items when you pass through them.

Ah, so monster stealing you think is just simply the stealing skill function hm...

Connor and Petra, you both entirely missed what he was asking.

G.V.P., the answers you want are here : http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=171389

Check other topics first next time.
Crysta, chill.
Remember why you're in a tizzy, and focus. Don't take it out elsewhere.

Here we go for answers:
Equip Merchants trinket on a vendor.
Use undertakers staff when you're "close" to your corpse.
Attack monsters with the smugglers edge.

Also, quite possibly - ready your yens.

staff is awesome, stealing blade will be really nice for spawn thieves, wonder if its imbuable? ill haveta check. the earrings, you put on a vendor and it reduces how much he charges you per day? nice idea.
i hear about monster pulling, are they adding a way to reach unreachable corpses? if so very nice for swoops and other flyin stuff. All in all its been a mighty fine year for UO players. :D

Haha thanks Kiminality. Yeah, personally, I understood how the other items worked, I just didn't know about the Monster Stealing one. And Crysta, thanks for the link. I did do a search, but whenever I do a search, whether it is Monster Stealing or "Monster Stealing," Stratics' search doesn't do wonders for me. Besides, I figured there would be enough interest in the whole set of items, should they be used on other shards, although I assume they are just for Test Center (unless we will indeed need to break out the ¥s).

And NP Kiminality, I'm well aware of Crysta's impatience, haha. She's an artist, a perfectionist ;P.

Merchant's Trinket= 5% or 10% discount on vendor fees. Untested. I wonder if you place the trinket on a vendor's paper doll ???

I'm a little confused as to why people are using the 'drops' term. They sound like they are intended to be new "New player" quest items. So, it would make sense to have a gate installed in New Haven for us to test them.

I don't see anywhere in the spoiler text that would indicate where they will eventually come from. Am I missing something?

Also known as a micropayment. They are becoming more popular with browser based games and newer MMOs. In this example Kiminality is referring to purchasing the above items for real life money from the UO Game Codes website (http://www.uogamecodes.com). There are plenty of items already available on the site as it is so I would not be surprised if this were the case for these items. I have no proof or reason other than it would make sense.

Okay, got it. Like something for sale on UOGameCodes.

I just looked at those items and thought they would be rather profession-specific, so I assumed they were adding a few more NPC "New Player" quests for New Haven. Like the:

begging -> earings give you 10% off *NPC* vendor prices, not player ones
undertaker staff -> new reward for defeating the dark night

But I haven't tried them out. *shrug*

So basicly the earrings are an item reward from a quest, an item that basicly gives what players was given in old days for joining the NPC guilds....

Hmmm...... so why do I see links to monster stealing ?

That is not from where these new items will be supposed to come from ?

If you were paying attention a year ago, stealing from monsters was a new aspect of the Stealing Skill added for thieves in Pub 57.

It allowed you to steal random items from monsters, with increasingly rare items/special potions, based on your skill and the monster's fame. This requires no special instrument, just your skill (although I believe one of your hands has to be free).

This "stealing knife" seems like it may work similarly, but on a passive basis. In other words, you have a chance at auto-stealing upon a successful hit. Know one really knows; I'm purely speculating.

Edit: I've had a chance to play with them all, and:

The knife works as expected, it's a small chance at a passive steal that has the same limitations of the Stealing Skill (i.e. won't let me steal 35 logs from Treebrothers). However, it keeps attempting to steal the same item. It should try to steal a random item from within their pack each time (limit 1, of course). That way you have a better chance of grabbing those arrow/bandages/gold and not keep grabbing for boards or ore, etc.

The undertaker's staff is genuinely cool, as it allows you to grab your corpse from even blocked locations. Like from on top of towers...or in the middle of those pesky spawns from several screens away. I tried very hard to get it to fail and the only criteria seems to be distance. However, I has issues getting it to work across server lines. And it only has 100 charges.

And I was wrong about the earrings. You indeed put them on your vendor and get a discount in vendor fees for that day, 1 day = 1 charge. 10% for 40 days, 5% for 90 days.

Will this passive stealing require the stealing skill or is is another reason to kill your thief because of his uselessness?

I tested with various levels of stealing, though I didn't record any hard statistics. With 0-40 stealing, you might get a successful 'snoop', if you will, but rarely a successful steal. 40-80, the snoops happen more often and you might get a good pinch every few min or so. Even at 120, it's about 1:2, but you only get a successful snoop every min or so.

But keep in mind, the whole process is completely dependent on a successful strike of your weapon. So, unlike the stealing skill, your weapon and tactics levels ultimately affect your success rate.

Just for fun, I 120'd swords, tactics, anatomy, and stealing...then went up against some orcs. I think I got a successful grab (including fails on stuff that was too heavy) about once every couple of minutes or so. But since you can't actually see what you're trying to get, it's anyone's guess as to whether the item will be useful/light enough to grab, or not.

I know this sounds confusing, but bottom line: no, this will not make your thieves obsolete. The knife seems specifically *for* your thief. As a matter of fact, this will probably help you farm some of the new rare stealables.

One caveat: I didn't try to repair it, so I don't know if it's PoF-able or not.

That's a good question and the answer is no, I didn't think of it. I don't normally use a thief, so it was somewhat new to me.

Edit:

On further quick testing, I set my snooping skill to 80 and my stealing skill to 0 and I gained stealing on each attempt. It also snooped much more often (previously I only set my stealing to 120). So it looks as it depends on *both* your snooping and stealing skills, just like with regular thieving. And you do indeed get gains from the passive swipe. I just went after a bunch of crystal ele's and every time it went after the gold, kinda like orcs do. So maybe it's not random at all.

Thanks for checking, the really good stuff is supposed to come from the peerless and champ bosses. I'd be interested to know if the weapon allows for acquisition of the balms and such in that manner or if it is merely a cool tool for gaining the skills as opposed to hours of stealing from a pack animal.

I don't know. This test char isn't really set up to take on any peerless, but I assume so, since everything else seems to be paralleled.

Btw. I spoke too soon about the randomness thing. I killed a few dozen more ele's and did pick up several gems, which aren't in the first ordered slot, so...randomness is back in the game.

Also, for reference, with 100 snoop and 120 stealing, I was attempting to steal at least 2-3 times per ele, assuming it was a successful strike of course.

Actually, until the new balms and lotions were added, stealing from monsters was shut down for a long time (like, years) Presumably because thieves would rob the critter dry before you killed it, leaving you nothing.

The pet "drop" command was restricted to bonded pets for the same reason. Prior to that it was possible to tame and drop loot from dragons in Destard, leaving someone else to kill them for no loot.

Drake, no I haven't found the items yet. I went to test after doing my tickets this am, and noticed that they are blessed. So we have gates in NH on Test, I am going to go look for newly added quest givers on production shards.

I did notice new strings added in the patch on the EC. Give me a bit.

*edit* nothing in New Haven nor in the underworld portion of SA, could be referral rewards? or new player creation items?

I think the Royal City in Ter Mur is going to be invaded. Expect massive carnage. Remembering the problems many had with finding their bodies during the Magincia and Luna invasions, the devs probably came up with the undertaker's staff as a solution, especially for the poor souls playing while using the Enhanced client. Who knows how you'll get them. However, they'll probably never spawn again and will be another get-rich-quicker item for the merchants.

I have been wondering the exact same thing. In the "Ask the Devs" forum this very subject was addressed by Mark_Mythic on Nov.26/09. This is what he said (and I quote):

Effete Putrid Gargoyles are part of the night spawn around the holy city in Ter Mur. Each night, zombies attack the Holy City and they are one of the monsters who attack.

Treefellow Guardians are not in the game at the moment... they were... err... resting. They will be back next publish. Sorry about that.

So Mark_Mythic or anyone else from EA/Mythic... would you care to field this one again?
