Spirit Speak skill in sampire template

I have read here in the warriors forum that some sampires exchange like resist magic etc for spirit speak skill in situations where the mobs do not cast alot of spells on you. My question is this a passive skill where bye you stand around dead corpses and absorb (I beleive it was health), from them. Or do you need to actually use the skill spirit speak to get the advantage of leaching health. Also I thought I read that with like gm spirit speak you can ress other players with the skill, plus that your spells that you cast will be enhanced more.
If i"m understanding this correctly staying alive under certain conditions would be easier with SS rather the resist magic. Thank you in advance for any insight on this skill and its advantages to sampires.

Spirit Speak does several things.

At GM or over you can see other players ghosts even when they're not in war mode.

Using the skill directly will use some mana and heal you.

Using the skill in the proximity of a corpse (that hasn't already been drained) will heal you without expending mana.

The skill also improves the duration or effectiveness of most of the Necromancy spells. For example Wraith Form's mana drain effect is scaled by Spirit Speak. Spirit Speak also affects the duration of certain spells like Curse Weapon, it is also used in the duration calculation (against Resisting Spells) when placing curses (such as Blood Oath/Mind Rot/Corpse Skin etc). It also affects the damage of certain spells and what Familiars you are entitled to.

Primarily a sampire would put it on if they were doing something that was better suited to being in Wraith Form, or using Curse Weapon in addition to or instead of being Vamp Form.

Thank you for the info. I'll have to try it out on some lower level mobs to see how it works for me.
