I am not new to the game but have never really played a mage or necro/mage.

My template at the moment looks like this and it is only made for PvM and spawns (although I would be happy to at least survive a couple of seconds in fel with him):

120 magery
110 eval int (will go 120)
110 med (will prolly go 120 as well)
100 necro
100 SS

Now, should I go 120 with necro and SS as well in your oppinion? And what other skills would be good for this char?
I have resist, wrestling, poisoning, insciption, spellweaving and most other skills on stone. Any advice?

2nd question:
I have never really understood the thing with SC mage weapons. Whats the big benefit? Without tact and/or anatomy I won´t really hit anything, will I? So I guess it is mainly for defense, right? Is it cause with a weapon skill of 99 (with a -21 mage weapon) I won´t get hit as often and spells won´t be disrupted? Well, I thought that I will have to use protection anyway so I can´t be disrupted, right?

Also, when using a mage weapon, can I still bump my magery up to 120 using items or will this not work? Cause with 99 I won´t even succeed with Ev´s too often.

Let´s say I would use a mage weapon, why is not everyone going for weapons like swords of prosp. and arties like this? I mean mage weap -0 and FC1 can´t be beaten by any other mage weapon can they? Or is it cause they are two handed and you lose the benefit of the shield?

And last: what would a good mage weapon look like? I guess it has to be one handed, SC no penalty, -21, and as much DCI as possible. Anything else needed???

Thank you very much for your time,

Pandrax of Europa

There are quite a few questions in your post, I'll try to answer what I can. The reason people are running around with 1 handed Mage weaps is because they can chug potions. The faction crystalline ring has +20 magery and fcr 3, so the ultimate setup would be a 1 handed -20Mage weap with no -casting and high dci. This brings your weapon skill to 120 because Mage weapons use your magery as a weapon skill, this is with the weapon equipped. So if you are not using some type of magery mods it will be less than 120. In pvp this means you will be hit by a dexxer with much more frequency. Additionally, protection is rarely used in pvp due to the casting penalty as well as you will just stand there getting hit while trying to get a spell off, meanwhile taking massive damage. Where without protection you can run and move, and get heals faster. Good luck.

Thanks a lot, this answered some of my questions.
It seems that mage weapons are used for PvP to not get hit as often.
It also answered the question whether it is possible to get your magery back to 120 when using a mage weapon.
But from what you said it looks like mage weapons are not as essential for PvM. At least one handed ones.

I still would be grateful if anyone could comment on the other parts of my original post.
Thanks,

P.S.: one small question I forgot to ask in my OP: would you advise to lock karma or not?

a mage weapon is still very usefull in pvm but it dont need to be 1 handed. for fairly cheap you should be able to pick up a swords of prosperity or staff of magi witch is a 2 handed weapon with faster casting 1 spell channelling and mage weapon -0. The reason for this is partualy to not getting fizzeled when hit but its also about Getting missed meaning less damage taken. You can do some damage with them but it wont be anofe to realy be worth it on that part.

resist spells isnt needed in pvm i would defnatly get some meditation.

you only need 105 necro and 120 spirit speak. Hope this helps

Locking Karma or not depends on what you do.
Each time you cast a necro spell, you will lose a lot of karma.
So If you are just champing or doing peerless, then its not really needed.
If you wanna go hunting and kill tons of spawn then its probably better.

But as a Necro its always a good decision to lock karma, due to the effect on your spells!
