Hey everyone, I got my 7th char slot recently and was thinking of making some sort of PvM caster. My question is, how do spellcasters fair in PvM versus an Archer or Sampire. Obviously the Sampire can solo more, but in terms of damage output, how does a well equipped spellcaster template do? I already have a Sampire and Archer, so I'm trying to figure out if I will really gain any benefit from making a spellcaster. Thanks guys.

They do good for mowing alot of spawn, but generally not as good against a high hit point creature solo. As for damage--

If you can load up on as much MR and sdi as you can handle, run a character such as a mystic spell weaver mage, you can definitly out damage a melee char, but it tends to need to be more of a group effort.

Try a Necro/Scribe/Mage, you can do more than other templates.

It combines several things:
Wraith Form so you drain mana.
Corpse Skin so your Fire spells do more damage.
High SDI. SDI is uncapped in PvM.
Inscription bonus. More of a difference on higher damage spells.
Delayed spell/Omen combos. Another 25 SDI.
Slayer books. Again no SDI cap. (Mage Weapon on EquipLastWeapon.)

For example you can Corpse/FS/Omen.
Chain Lightning/Omen.
etc. (Depending on what what you're fighting is weakest against.)
