perhaps the mods and admins need to rethink how and why people get banned... I mean christ... some talks about uo radio and poof gone... some one posts a humor pic of a gerbil humpping a computer mouse and banned... have a sense of humor

and btw i agree with the porn stuff uncalled for .... but still banning people for humor or freedom of speech is a joke

I assure you I'm well grown up and not a prude, some of the pictures were inoffensive, but others were totally inappropriate for this forum. I do not come here expecting to see pornography.

All you folks complaining about how heavy-handed the mods are here on Siege Stratics have apparently never tried some of the antics that go on here on other shard forums. Believe me, you've got it good.

Personally, I think that the ROC should be more strictly adhered to here than it currently is, or has been in a long time. Sure, a little troll here and there is one thing, but in the last 6 months I've seen all-out harmful personal attacks go unchecked, at least long enough to make one wonder if we even *have* a mod. I also feel that our mods need to come from outside shards, and not play Siege Perilous.

It's a tough job, and somewhat maddening, but if you don't feel you are up to the task, then don't volunteer.

Garaba, keep up the good work. And mend fast, broken feet/toes/ankles *suck*

I agree that some things have been let go that maybe shouldn't have... but I
think when you look at the sheer volume of crap we throw at them... Kelmo,
and Dor do a great job. The only reason I can see to select MODs from outside
Siege would be to make it easier on the MODs in game... otherwise I think it's
great that they know what everyone is talking about, and usually the context
in which things are said. Foreign MODs seem to lock a lot of really innocent things
because they don't know who are guildmates... or the personalitys involved.

I like the MODs we have. Maybe they should get a little stricter... but they've done a great job for us.

Cheers!

I do NOT want mods from outside of Siege. They DO NOT understand the community here. If anyone is worried about the mods being biased towards them, then perhaps they should just make sure they dont break the ROC. And if they have an issue with a mod, they can always contact an admin.

I believe Kelmo and Dor do a great job!

Precisely !!

And one of the *cutest* non porn of the lot was inappropriately ..racist, even if created in a comic way, it does not belong here. That one I hit notify mod upon FIRST ! Racist use of certain words even in *cutesy* pics of baby ducklings, does not belong slapped up on these forums HERE either.

I am not a prude either, but this is a game forum where people of 'all ages' may be visiting these forums, it is not a place for assinine anal porn photos.

Well I'm probably the only one who will admit it, but I don't so much mind the porn! haha Granted... this probably isn't the place for it.

I guess the kiddies think its more fun to post it here and watch everyone wig out about it, rather than post it on that OTHER forum where it doesn't really shock anyone.

I didnt see the pictures either but agree there should be a limit to how far things should go.

Mostly want to comment on the fact that I think our resident Mods do a pretty good job..maybe they call something wrong once in a while...so damn they are not perfect, who is? Those that think they can do a better job should maybe apply for the job, I know I sure couldnt do it.

But just take alook at the other shards, the post counts and the total lack of community. We have it good here and I for one would hate to see our boards turn out like the rest of them. I am pretty proud of the fact we actually can express how we really feel about things and as much as I dislike the epeen stuff we can do it pretty much without interference.

So does this mean I have Garaba Mod Approval to break the ROC the next time I am:
1) Frustrated or irritated
2) Suffering a personal injury
3) Up past my bedtime

Does it take all three or is one sufficient? Hope its only one, because at any given time I am likely to have some type of injury, be frustrated or simply lacking sleep.

Would appreciate some clarification on the rule given the shinning example and precedent this moderator/administrator has set for us.

Way to abuse your power. I presume that when I'm having a bad night, injured or lacking sleep, that it would be ok to call you an idiot? Yeah, I didn't think so.

The fact of the matter is that you frequently overstep the mods in this forum. I have noticed it time and again. I have always heard that you absolutely hate the Siege forum. I'm starting to suspect there is some truth to it. Given this, I feel you cannot possibly mod this forum fairly. Please do us a favor and do not bother to come back if you cannot mod this forum with a fair hand.

Last night's incident was [from what I've heard] entirely uncalled for. Despite that, if you had been a little more "human" about the original "infraction", it likely wouldn't have happened. Why be so quick to ban people? Ever heard of sending a PM and asking someone to alter a post? Perhaps remove an inapropriate pic? I can guarantee you he would have, had you asked.

We have a very small community on Siege as it is. This forum is part of what has created the "community" feel. If you continue banning our players at the current rate... You will have successfully destroyed the strongest community Ultima Online has to offer.

Replying to last. Let's cut Garaba a little slack. Using a poor choice of words can happen too any of us. I certainly have had some "issues" in the past and most likely will again. We are human after all. Well, most of us.

[/ QUOTE ]

"Freedom of speech" has been a term I have seen used a lot on various boards after someone has been banned. I've never understood why people believe they have the right of freedom of speech on a privately owned message board.

Chances are that if you walked into a privately owned building (store, restaurant, etc.) and started screaming something offensive or you were to break their rules you'd get thrown out. I don't see how it's any different on a privately owned message board.

Personally, while I admire the fact that the mods here are willing to give up their time and energy to do this, I think that the original myuo boards at uo.com should have never been shut down (and they actually paid their mods).

and some people don't find things very humorous campared to others...
For instance, changing your name to Ibichi and running around with a blessed spooky shroud is very funny to me. I think some others find it very offensive...but that's just from personal experience, I could be wrong...ya right lol.

[/ QUOTE ]

1) Are you serious about the 'not named' part? Did you know who he was talking about? So if by inference you can easily identify the individual, does it make it acceptable to simply say "but I didnt name him"? Give me a break.

2) Dennis Rodman is a public figure and, as such, is not subject to the same rules of criticism in public. Neither are politicians, CEO's, etc. If the newspaper or any means of mass communication were to openly criticize and slam a non-public figure (as defined), they could be found for defamation or intentional infliction of mental duress. Being a public figure forfeits some of those aspects simply because of the necessity to criticize those individuals.

3) He was a member of this community of the forums, but sitll is a member of the shard. So where do you define commmunity and what is the purpose of this forum? To help build community on the shard and in-game.

4) And granted, all people are human and deserve some slack. However, when challenged on the issue he didnt have the character to simply say: "I was wrong and I apologize for my words and setting a poor example." Instead, he sought to justify it with some lame excuses that he was having a bad day.

5) As I understand it, this guy isnt just another Moderator. Isnt he some type of administrator or something? Evidently he has a enough juice to ban people on a board where he is not a named moderator (to my knowledge that is simply Kelmo and Dor). **To clarify, he is listed as a mod on these boards because he is an administrator...not a Forum Specific Mod....Kelmo cant ban on UHall, I dont believe** Now given he is some type of 'super-mod', shouldn't he be held to even a higher standard?

Good god....

Being a public figure forfeits some of those aspects simply because of the necessity to criticize those individuals.

[/ QUOTE ]

Let's take the CEO example you cited. Just because a person is a CEO of a company it doesn't make them a public figure. Is there a certain limit of financial worth that a company must have to elevate the CEO into the public figure status you cited? I was the CEO of a California Corporation in the late nineties. The corporation consisted of about four people...basically I was a bookstore operator/manager, but I had the title of CEO on all legal documents filed with the state of California.

I think we also have to keep in mind the fact that we are dealing with made up names and avatars in UO. Almost every name (handle) you will encounter "online" is used by multiple people.

Also, I don't think calling someone an "idiot" fits the definition of defamation (first entry at dictionary.com: 1 : communication to third parties of false statements about a person that injure the reputation of or deter others from associating with that person ).

Honestly, how do you define a "public figure". Celebrity? Newsworthiness? A random citizen that gets shoved into the spotlight due to circumstances surrounding them (Amber Frey or a lottery winner, for example). Being in a movie? Where is the line drawn?

3) He was a member of this community of the forums, but sitll is a member of the shard. So where do you define commmunity and what is the purpose of this forum? To help build community on the shard and in-game.

[/ QUOTE ]

I see the "community" on stratics as just that, the stratics community. The way one posts here has no bearing on their UO account (unlike the uo.com boards, where board issues were attached directly to your uo account). Not everyone who plays on Siege posts here, and not everyone who posts here plays on siege. This is a board community.

For instance, someone may play an "evil" character who res kills and dry loots in game but may have a completely different boards persona, making lighthearted posts and having a friendly demeanor.

4) And granted, all people are human and deserve some slack. However, when challenged on the issue he didnt have the character to simply say: "I was wrong and I apologize for my words and setting a poor example." Instead, he sought to justify it with some lame excuses that he was having a bad day.

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't personally say anything about that. I never brought up giving him slack. I will point out that in your mind it is a "lame" excuse, while others may not see it that way. That is your opinion. I don't have an opinoin on that either way.

Now given he is some type of 'super-mod', shouldn't he be held to even a higher standard?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, again, that is your opinion on the matter. I don't think he should be held to a higher standard honestly. Now that I'm giving that issue some thought though, I think that the people who volunteer their time here might actually be given more room for error than the rest of us who post here.

Again though, I think it's ridiculous that UO/EA have to rely on volunteers to do their work. If they are going to designate boards as their "official" boards, they should be staffed with paid employees.
