Some help in Skill Gains ....

Ok, I ran tinkering up to 89.4 on my metal/wood/leather crafter.

I decided to try and stone off Tinkering and put it on a new character to finish off (more GGS?).

The characters total skills at the moment is 139.5

Am I understanding things more or less correctly?

Is the Spy Glass the best thing to GM?

You shoudl gain faster that way yes.

If Memory serves i used Heating stands to GM, although you could enlist some help and get discorded at twisted weald and craft...whatever it was at that level. You should GM in hours discod with that low skill total!

Thanks for the reply.

I have considered TW as that is how I finished Lockpicking.

I may very well just load up a Pack Animal or a Blue Beetle and see if I can finish the Skill off.

The Spy Glass came from Basar's guide to gaining but it may have been more in line with doing quests in Heartwood.

I am going to let the character cool down for a bit. I did a lot of heaters and a fair amount of Fancy Wind Chimes and didn't see a skill gain. So I ASSUME that loading up the Tinkering skill may have whacked some numbers ......

Besides being a quest item, they use a LOT less ingots than the other things. You'll gain faster on the chimes, though (and, isn't there a quest for them too?)

The Fancy Wind Chimes .... I computed the Ingot consumption to go from 89.5 to 100.0 at some where near 120K based on gains the crafter character was getting (at real skill cap 705).

Part of why I switched and decided to try the One Skill Mule approach.

Yah there is the Fancy Wind Chime Quest that does give Recipe's and gains (very slow after about 85.0) and certainly very heavy on the Ingot consumption.

I would just like to polish off that crafter at 120 Blacksmith (currently 95.7), 120 Tailoring (currently 108.3) and Tinkering (currently 89.5). Carpentry is already GM'd.

I need to look into the Blacksmithing and see if I can do it in TW with just a Fire Beetle. I suspect I can not.

No, you'd have to have an anvil too....

Smithing is easy enough - and low-consumption if you use the method I suggest in the skill gain logs (circlets and royal circlets, with 105 mining and a salvage bag - especally using make max in KR if set up to keep going through failures through a UI)

Well .... I certainly an not happy with this version of Skilling up :(

Well I got to around 94.5 on doing the SpyGlass/ Heater (didn't see a lot of difference between them skill wise) and things were ok, good enough skill gains, a time sink but not a HUGE investment in ingots.

Then at 94.5 things went into the toilet.

To refresh this character only has tinkering and about 100 skill points needed to get around. The total real skill is like 195.x (currently) with jewelry (mostly for stats) is it around 210.

Using Fancy Wind Chimes, I can get a run of maybe 5 skill ups, then a long dry spell of nothing.

Using SpyGlass, I mostly just get a long run of NO skill ups.

I finished off at 98.0 last night and decided to just do it in spurts.

My guess is at the moment I am at about 2.5 skill ups per 1K ingots.

I need 20 Skill ups so I am estimating it will be around 20K ingots. I currently have around 34K ingots so I assume I will get the Tinker GM. I am also assuming this will be approximately 10 hours invested time to finish off.

A word to any UO person that may read this, this is not how I envisioned spending my UO time.

Well After burning a few thousand ingots and getting just the one daily skill up, I am throwing in the towel on this one and take the daily ggs, so just 19 days to go to GM Tinker.

Actually, I got my fastest gains towards GM tinkering by making nunchakus. It also requires boards, but mixing something new into the mix sure seemed to help gains. Maybe I was lucky but I remember going from 85 to 100 tinkering in about two days. So I would suggest making new things (not just the nunchakus) to see how well that works for you.

I did the Nanchakus (I actually have a larger stash of wood than ingots), Heaters and Fancy Wind Chimes.

I have very little doubt if I throw an infinite amount of resources at it AND can some how manage to withstand the mind numbing experience I would get to GM Tinker sooner.

I have other skills to work, namely Blacksmith and Tailoring. I am hoping that because the Skill Bot total skills are just over 200 that I can get 3 GGS per day and be finished with it in 6 days ..... It probably sounds like I am more disappointed/ticked off than I am. Just navigating what appears to be the most resource conservative, optimum course.

OH... one other thing that helped me a lot that I forgot to mention. Find a talisman with high +tinkering exceptional bonus, low tinkering bonus if possible. You gain faster from making exceptional nunchaku than plain ones, and it doesn't affect your skill gain rate like jewelry does!

I will fish around in my talismans and see if I can come up with something like that.

I can get two a day and I suspect I could get a 3rd if I knew how to calculate the GGS time.

I am currently at 98.4 at 221.9 total skills.

Perhaps, it is somewhat hard to follow and seems to be rather vague on .... the information being correct (as in a hard formula) that is not a complaint, it is just an observation that the impression given is ... well maybe you will or will not get ......

Any who,

Based on my character being well below the 350 total skill colum

the row: 95.0 – 99.9 5.6 hours

would seemingly be the estimated time.

To fudge things a bit, if I were to try to make something every 6 hours (rather than 5 hours 36 minutes) then I could expect to see a ggs each try?

I stopped testing the spaceing at 5 hours last night :(

I will give it a try to night.

Ok the chart suggested 5.6 hours, I made an item at 9:00am. I made another item at 6:00pm (9 hour diffence) and no skill up for that character :(

PS: I actually made 20 spyglass to make sure.

Uhm, I have no clue what your driving at ....

Unless it is the ambiguity of the term Approximate as in one lives approximately on the planet Earth, well that probably covers more than a handful of Human Beings.

I appreciate the help Petra offered as I had not really seen that link. My post indicated that we clearly are not talking about a few +- HOURS of approximate, 9 hours is approximately 180% of the indicated approximate intervals between GGS gains.
