[Magery] Soloing the Ancient Wyrm

I have a bard / mage, and I've been away from UO for a while. I don't want to retool this character; what I want to do is find an effective way of soloing an ancient wyrm. Relevant skills are 110 magery / 100 EI / 100 Med, the rest in trasure hunting or bard skills.

EV's are dispatched, Earth Elementals are crushed, mana dump deals little damage. Can a mage solo an ancient wyrm?

I've done it many times on a pure mage (mage, med, eval, wrestle, resist).

Gear up with good SDI, add in a dragon-slayer or reptile slayer spellbook (got a dragon slayer scrapper's compendium a week ago for 1.5mil).

I prefer to use lots of direct damage spells rather than summons so I'd use flamestrike or energy-bolt while running in and out of range.

How many ebolts did it take you?

I found a cheap dragon slaying spellbook, but even with it, the wyrm heals itself faster than I can deal damage and meditate.

kill something else, the wyrms aren't even worth it...loot, fame, karma or otherwise....

man, i remember when killing the ancient wyrm was awesome. that one spot in destard that you could teleport to and just exchange EBs with it. sucked if you died though lol. you said your a bard right? should be easy for you then, discord, provo wyverns on it, area peace it. EB and run around on an ethy.

It usually takes in the 14 to 20 e-bolt range depending on interruptions that allow more time for it to heal. This is with about 65% SDI plus the slayer property.

Mana-regen is extremely helpful as well as fc/fcr.

I generally go to the top of the Ilshenar volcano where the wyrm is a little separated from other mobs. Decent running room, but fewer distractions.

I'm a bard with provo, not peace. And I can't leave them alone, I'm soloing L6 t-hunts and I just can't lure them off and leave them somewhere.

I can provo stuff onto the wyrm, but the wrym tears up everything, even the balron. And Even with 120 Provo I can't provo 2 wyrms.

I thought I had a decent suit for a part-time player. I have a scrappers compendium or a dragon slaying spellbook with macros to swap them (the dragon slayer spellbook is better, 50-60 points damage each ebolt.) Without the scrappers, I have a full 70's suit, a kasa of the rajin with 12% SDI, a 1/3 ring, a 1/3 bracelet with 6% SDI, a rune beetle carapace with mana regen 3, lower mana cost 15%, and mana increase 10.

So that's 18% SDI. I don't have a clue how to get that to 65%.

It's the suit that makes a part of the difference.

The mage suit I use has...

All 70's resist - Medable.
11 Hit Point Regen
14 Mana Regen
10 Hit Point Increase
7 Mana Increase
40% Lower Mana Cost
100% Lower Reagent Cost
45% Defense Chance Increase
65% Spell Damage Increase
10% Reflect Physical Damage
2 Faster Casting
6 Faster Cast Recovery
23 Intelligence Bonus
5 Dex Bonus

and I am able to get e-bolts of 100 to 110 damage per hit.

The other part is that I have not really tried to solo level 6 maps, and always do ancient's in an area where I will not be disturbed much by other mobs... so you do have the more challenging situation.

Specific items:

Hat of the Magi - 10
Pendant of the Magi - 5
Robe of Death - 3
Crystalline Ring - 20
SpellBook 25 to 30 (25 if Scrappers - 30 if Invasion book).

This leaves me between 63 and 68 depending on the book (averaged to get 65).

Perhaps I should rephrase the question - how does somebody with 20 SDI solo the ancient wyrm?

Playing part time means it's impossible to get that sort of equipment.

Get 120 Disco is the most effective. AWs are rough, I usually just lure them away and come back with my script mage or Disco tamer. You need Magic Resist as well, all you need is one para and your dinner.

To answer the OPs question, how a part-time player without ultra-expensive gear can handle this task, I would suggest focusing more on LMC than SDI. Sure it's really nice to do lots of damage per attack, but if you look closely, he's saying that he cannot regenerate mana fast enough to overcome AWs healing. The immediate reaction is more mana regen, but LMC is really the better solution to the problem. With LMC40 along with 120 med and some mana regen, your passive mana regen will allow you to cast, I don't know, 20-25 Ebolts before running out of mana, especially if you need to do a little running around rather than just standing and mana dumption. LMC will keep you fighting & casting longer.

Don't know if that is enough for you to overcome an AW, but I think a big helping of LMC would be more useful than additional SDI (he has a slayer which helps a lot with damage).

I Havnt loged in in quite some time now so i might be a bit of.

5 SDI - Penadnt
30 SDI - Invasion book
12 SD - Kasa
10 SDI - SpellWoven
10 SDi - Midnight Bracers
20 SDI - Crstaline Ring
12 SDI - Bracelet
3 SDI - Robe
10 SDI - Scribe

I might have missed some items but those would get you above 100 sdi.

I have a Bard mage, and while I've never fought an Ancient Wyrm, I can fight the Harbinger (Halloween event guy) by Flamestriking, then peacemaking. Flamestriking, then peacemaking. (Area peace). Of course it's discorded, also.

Targeted peacemaking would work better, but area peace works fine.. I also found that if a dragon is being area peaced, it won't use firebreath as an attack, or at least very rarely. It's been awhile since I fought a dragon other than Rikktor.

I used to solo Ancient Wyrms back in 2003 or so on my wrestling mage. It would take awhile but I actually just used ebolts and tried to stay a screen length away from it the whole time. Unless things have changed much since then, Ancient Wyrms should be even easier now with necromancy, spellweaving, and other nice skills.

The Rising Colossus from Mysticism makes it easy. Especially if you take advantage of one of the provocation spell songs or discordance or both. Even without it takes only 3-6 of them until they die. You don't need any equipment such as slayer spell books or any amount of spell damage increase. You just need 120 mysticism (or else you will fizzle too often) and 120 focus.

Aha! So you may be able to answer my question posted earlier. Do you have the wrestling to stop the interruption of your spells and do you need to have any kind of anatomy or tactics to go along with it or will wrestling stand on its own to stop disruption?

Thanks!

Wrestling seems to work on it's own for stopping spell interruptions. Since this posting, I've improved my suit so that I now have 70 physical resists even with Protection on so I have both Wrestling and Protection. I don't think I ever get interrupted any more.
