What might seem like a lot of money to you isn't for other people. It is the same as some players thinking 10 million gold is a large sum when to a lot of rares collectors that is just another trade.

that is very true. i went to school with a guy who couldnt find a job worth [censored] when he graduated. he worked at a burrito place in town making maybe $20,000 a year
he found out that his degree made him eligible for the electronics section in the national patent office, a job which paid him in the neighborhood of $80-100,000 a year. he was still just a kid, so spent thousands on games, game consoles, computer and electronic equipment, etc... he would definitely have been one of those guys paying $2k for a computer game item

If there is no monarch, then there is no royal family eh.
Nobility is worth squat in nearly all countries nowadays anyway. A lot of people whose ancestors were powerful and rich, now live in poverty. Whenever one person dies, his wealth gets split up between his children and so it waters down. Especially castles and large estates are very costly to maintain, so those get sold off and there goes all the prestige of the old. A friend of mine that has some fancy titles is on welfare. 'Hi, I'm a marquis. Can I now get my $500 welfare?'.
Anyway, I even know poor people that spend fortunes on UO. They'd be living in some crappy $250/mo apartment and be spending thousands of bucks on UO. All about priorities. But of course it's easier to do so if 'it's just another 2k'.
I personally would never spend more than a few bucks on this game. Regardless of RL wealth. I dislike the instant gratification of spending RL cash on something ingame. Never any need to save up anymore. Takes away a lot of the challenges.
The excitement is in training your char to legendary mage in order to pvp. If I would just buy everything for RL cash, I'd soon be back to sipping tea in my garden.
