I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question correctly, but here goes.

I play on Pac, Origin, Sonoma and Siege occasionally if I'm really bored.

They are all the lowest ping for me.

I picked LS because I thought it had to do with a geographic region of the world near Lake Superior.

It turns out that all of the shards are hosted somewhere else and they name them after geographical locations for retro nostalgia.

My decision making isn't really based on anything other than an understanding of geography. It turns out that LS is the best shard to play on, so I got pretty lucky. Nobody bash me with LS slander because I will call "a shats," and there is no recovery from that.

I started out on Cats, but after I was finally able to buy a deed for a small workshop, I was unable to find a spot ANYWHERE to place it. (this was about 6 years ago)

I came over to Siege mainly because it had a lower population, and there was room to place a house. I was, and still am, mostly solo, so I just went about doing my thing, and collecting an impressive supply of Death Robes. As time went on, I leaned what I can do, and more importantly, what I can't do, (PvP), and became pretty settled in here.

Coming to Siege turned out to be a good thing for me because if I had stayed on a production, I would have left this game after the first year. PvM is a pleasant pastime, but has gotten completely unchallenging. I enjoy the possibility of a thinking opponent coming at me at most any given time. It adds spice to the game.

I wouldn't mind a bit higher population here either. Lately it's been getting too quiet in most places.

I play Oceania on two accounts.

It's the only shard where I ping well as I'm based in Australia. I have (GM) characters on other production shards, also two newbish chars on Siege, but the ping really is an issue, typically 250-400 to off-shore shards.

Because when I made my first character I lived closer to the Catskill mountains than the Pacific Ocean or Lake Superior and I didn't want to be on some crowded Atlantic coast server.

I originally picked Sonoma because it was the best ping for me. 8+ years later I stay because of the history and the back story.

Baja when I want nice and peaceful

Great Lakes and Atlantic, when I feel bloodthirsty

Siege when I feel nostalgic (also to see how long I can avoid a certain scoundrel's grubby hands :p)

I originally started playing on Great Lakes because I live in the Chicago area, however after a year of being disappointed by the community, I moved to Pacific and have been much happier in-game.

napa for some friends of mine who were playing on there and said they could help me out. Well that was many moons ago. I have made alot of new friends..and one or two enemies but I stay there for it just feels like home there.

I do tho also play on Siege and on Ocean. Againg for the same reason as above. But just not as much.

Origin when I want to test or get info.

Pacific when I want to play with lotsa people and friends.

Baja most of the time because of my numerous friends and low population and layed back atmosphere.

Siege once in a blue moon when I want to irritate the populace with my blaze AoS robe and sandies ;)

LS. I had made different charaters on different shards over the years, and even paid to transfer charaters to a couple differnt ones. But, one day, I was looking for stuff to by from vendors on Ice Isle, and ran across, "DeadEye". He was quitting, and had cleaned out, and was in the process of dropping his Castle. "Mark, recall to town, buy house placement tool, recall back". My heart was pounding, I get there, he is gone, Castle is gone. It took me over 30 attempts to finially get it placed.

Yea, my Ping sucks since i am in Vegas. But until i know i could bring my Castle along, i will just stay put here. :danceb:

I started on pac, but couldn't find anywhere to place a decent sized house, mainly because I didn't know where to look, so I moved to origin when it opened. I stayed on origin because the people there are helpful and I have had a fun time there.

Baja, because I liked the name, and at the time Oceania did not exist.

Now I play on GL, however I started on LS...... didn't like the people I ran into there.... so went to GL. Been on GL ever since.... however I did test out a couple of years ago what it was like on a very open shard... so I tried out Legends.... while the people I met there were quite nice.... it never felt like "home"...... I guess that's the best way I can describe it... to me GLs feels more like home..... I know where things are.... I know much of the rich RP history of GL.. and really that's the most important part of my gameplay... I don't play to gather the best of the best stuff.... I don't play to do champ spawn after champ spawn..... I don't play to hunt every peerless till I drop.... It's not about the hunting, PvP, crafting or whatever for me.... It's about the community..... It's about having a great time with friends escaping into my character... where I try to play from my characters point of view..... it's immersing myself in a world where I don't care about the price of gas or what's on TV... I care about the safety and well-being of Britania and it's citizens...... I care about these strangers that I hear about in certain cities and dungeons.. and what they might or might not be up to.... and I of course care about the slaughter that occured in Castle British!.... Solving mysteries.... defending the land from invasion... and spying on those naughty ninja's in Tokuno!

It all depends on what you pay to play..... if hunting and gathering is your thing then perhaps you may want a less populated shard where you have a larger reign and more oppertunity at the "premium" hunting spots.... If PvP is your thing then perhaps you should concider Seige or Mugen..... If you want to be a part of something... and you pay to lose yourself in the realm of UO then perhaps you should look into RP..... I won't tell anyone what they should do for their buck... I just know what I want out of mine...

And while I know that there are other shards who may have a more active community than GL, I have no desire to ever leave my home here... with 8 accounts and 8 homes and a firmly established role in the community here there just isn't any way I would ever think of leaving... I enjoy the rich history of the shard... Some of which I have helped to create... Some of which I strive to continue to build. There is nothing more exciting for me than knowing I live in a player run town....

I hope you find such a place in UO to call your home.

I play an East Coast shard even though I live on the West Coast, because I was introduced to the game by someone who plays on the East Coast. It gets kind of lonely late at night though. Maybe I'll look into a West Coast shard to play also.

europa.mostly because i am european and drachenfels lacks the population. not to mention the very nice guild i have the honor to be a member of. the peeps in TS speaking my native language and getting the point when i try to make funny comments or ask for help.
actually, i have some chars on other shards, but due to the times i play, nobody is around and in general i played these only during europa's server downtime.

LS, but it didn't exist when I started...

The shards DID once indicate the geographic locations of the servers, and when LS was still new I tried it (being central) and had a much better connection so I stayed.

By the time LS became the single Worst shard of them all for crashes, reverts, and general connectivity issues, I had become a part of the community there. Guild hunting reds, training new players and checking up on them later, providing lumber for a well-known (but recently retired :( ) bowcrafter, or hanging out at the forges on my smith doing repairs and selling armor/weapons.

Started on Chesapeake, out of the 3 servers that existed at that point. Had tried the others but they were too laggy.

I then moved to Europa thinking about better lag.

I started on Catskills. Eventually I started to get bored. Something was missing from my game experience.

I left UO for awhile, then when I came back, since my house was gone and I really didn't have anything of real worth left on Cats, I decided to play on Siege.

It was pretty much everything I wanted from UO (the decreasing population is my only major problem with it). I had total freedom to do what I want. People on Siege are unique, and your actions can affect people in a good or bad way, moreso than the production shards.

It just felt more real, more like what UO should be. I wouldn't feel at home anywhere else.

I started playing con Catskills in January 1998. It was the closest shard to Euorpe back then, and most Eurpoean players were playing there. Later, when the shards Europa and Drachenfels were released, I didn't switch. I just loved the Catskills community too much. Somehow, a shard really CAN feel like home.

I still am playing on Catskills, even though most people log in at about 11 pm and 5 am my time. I love the community on this shard, its history, and its roleplaying guilds. Also, Catskills is a very active shard.

I've always been based on Pacific. The friends that brought me to UO were on Pac and I've stayed since it's got a decent enough population size but also not too populated to seem crowded. I'm very well established there, and outside of characters that are created for x-shard trading, will continue to be my UO home.

I started on LA because that was where my daughter and son-in-law play. Now i stay there because of the family feeling. The community is always helping each other, that really showed last Friday with the new quest. Good people = good fun.;)

When I first played, I was on Sonoma. Not really sure why I picked Sonoma...
I left Sonoma when I went to play Everquest for a year or so, and started back up on Catskills when I returned.
I stayed in Catskills because of the RP community up until about 2 years ago - now it's just the general community that keeps me on the shard. Lots of variety, lots of great people.

...I'm on Siege now because it's better.

Started on Pacific 10 years ago, because thats the server a RL friend made his chars on... and we both live round Chicago.. Never really had any connection problems, save for the days of 28.8..

10 years later.. two accounts, two towers next to eachother loaded with rares n such. Pac will always be my home, regardless of how many FL are on.

Played Cats for a lil bit during the midday server downs on Pacific some years ago. Would play an orc with the Shadowclan. They still around? Or did they migrate?

I was introduced to the game by family members already playing on Napavalley, so that is where I played. While playing Napavalley I met a truly wonderful group of role players some I consider family and am still in contact with 8.5 years later. I took a break for a couple years to play EverQuest and upon my return to UO the role players I sought out were now playing on Catskills. I began fresh on the new shard, met some more amazing role players some whom have also become family in the past 3 years. I play Catskills for the free form storytelling, the interaction with the rp community and for the people I love to share my time with.

I started out on catskills back in 2000 because of the friend who got me playing had started there. That and I figured since the catskills mountains were in the same state, I'd have good connection speeds. (Back when I was on dialup and it was an issue). I took a 4 year break, but came back to cats, mainly because I am well established here. I've made char's on other shards (Oceania, Great Lakes & Siege) but more often than not I'm on cats. It just feels like home to me.
